August 15, 201214 yr Author Photo showing how this could have happened. Interesting. I didn't know there was that much slack in the cuffs. Doesn't seem like that's wise. If he can get his hand to that point he can shoot the officer.
August 15, 201214 yr I've seen handcuffed shoplifters take one last drink of Mt. Dew before going to jail, so I always though the improbable scenario was indeed probable.

August 15, 201214 yr Interesting. I didn't know there was that much slack in the cuffs. Doesn't seem like that's wise. If he can get his hand to that point he can shoot the officer. Well, like I said, if someone is young, thin and athletic or flexible they can do it. I saw a lady Saturday night blow her nose while cuffed. Yes an officer can be shot by someone cuffed and it's happened before. But for every thin person who can pull this feat off there are 10 overweight people who need every bit of slack in the chains of the cuffs and/or need 2 sets of cuffs linked together.
August 15, 201214 yr Hinged Cuffs used in this manner (Stacked) would do a lot to reduce any chance anything like this could happen. But Hinged Cuffs are much more expensive than regular run of the mill cuffs most departments issue. Many officers buy this type on their own.

Seems like a problem waiting to happen.

August 15, 201214 yr What's the solution? You can't please everyone and it's easy to Monday morning QB it. Sometimes hinged cuffs are nice to have. But they have there flaws as well. They only load 1 way and do not spin. Can be very difficult to apply in a fight because they are so rigid. There is give and take with both types of cuffs.

I call it putting officers in harm's way when it seems like technology could fix this issue. Just make cuffs that expand but can be locked down from giving that much room for people to do what this guy supposedly did OR to shoot the unsuspecting officer instead.
August 15, 201214 yr That's a million dollar idea Clyde...seriously if something like that could be made it'd be great. The closest thing for obese are what are called "universal cuffs". Fat wrist have more room. I guess it comes down to preference and practicality. There is only so much room on a duty belt. I have a 32" waist. Put a mag pouch for 2 mags, holster w/ gun, baton, flashlight, rubber glove pouch, radio, taser, OC, 2 sets of standard cuffs, body mic, and belt keepers which keep the belt up and from coming off. I literally have zero room left and all that weighs around 25 lbs.
August 15, 201214 yr I do not know how to imbed a photo from iPad if you know how Clyde, but this is how I presume he was cuffed in the incident at hand. It's not the way I was taught to do it, but sometimes it happens. It gives the prisoner more dexterity. StockphotoPro: Images for handcuffs > Arrested prisoners hands in handcuffs
