July 1, 201214 yr I truly believe that without Phil Hartman then Farley and Ferrell may not have had an SNL to be on. That mid-80s cast saved them from cancellation, and Hartman was the anchor. He was also key in spanning that cast with the "Bad Boy" cast of the early 90s. You certainly can't go wrong with the guys you named, but Hartman was IMO one of the most versatile guys to ever be on the show. He was awesome on the show. I loved his Bill Clinton & also his James Stockdale. :lol:

I don't think he was. But, I've been wrong before. Someone mentioned Steve Martin as a host, he was also a cast member I believe. Good chance I come away from this post looking really stupid.

Good chance I come away from this post looking really stupid. Bill Murray replaced Chevy Chase in the cast in season two or three. There was allegedly some kind of mutual dislike of each other that arose from that fact which eventually translated into some on-set drama during the shooting of Caddy Shack. I think he was only in the cast for a couple of years. I wasn't sure about Steve Martin (I read his autobiography Born Standing Up a few years back and don't remember reading anything about being in the cast), so I looked him up. He was only a frequent host. Standings for most times as host are as follows: 16 - Alec Baldwin 15 - Steve Martin 12 - John Goodman 10 - Buck Henry 8 - Tom Hanks 8 - Chevy Chase 7 - Christopher Walken 6 - Elliot Gould 6 - Danny DeVito 6 - Drew Barrymore 6 - Candace Bergen 5 - Bill Murray

He was undoubtedly one of their most solid and versatile cast members (along with Gilda Radner, Darrell Hammond and Chris Parnell). He didn't have the star power that some cast members did, but he was absolutely vital to the show was a solid anchor when it came to that role.

July 1, 201214 yr I have the entire first 5 seasons on DVD. So I am going to be partial to the "Not Ready for Prime Time Players." There is some junk on those shows but also some sheer brilliance. You also have to remember that they pushed the envelopes first. It was unique and made me want to watch every Saturday night. I'd go with my personal four as: Belushi, Hartman, Radner, & Murphy.

I do feel they were the glue that really held many seasons together. As far as hosts, I like Alec Baldwin, but my personal favorite is Christopher Walken. Favorite bit is Celebrity Jeopardy.

July 1, 201214 yr A recent host that has been really good is Justin Timberlake...he is hilarious!!! No sure how many times he has hosted (2 or 3 times) but he is funny!
