June 26, 201214 yr Not sure how this is set up but as a rule, the donor pays gift taxes if it exceeds certain annual and lifetime limits. Gifts are not taxed to the recipient. If I give you $20 to help out because your house burned down, you don't pay tax on that. If I give you $50,000, I pay a gift tax but you still do not pay taxes. (Very general statement here) Based on what I've read I'm pretty sure she will not pay taxes. So if a friend of mine wins the lottery, and want to gift me $2 million I wouldn't have to pay taxes on that money? I always thought $13,000 was the maximum gift allowed without having to pay taxes.

June 26, 201214 yr Your friend would. I edited my post after you quoted it, but I thought $13, 000 was the maximum a person was allowed to receive as a gift without having to pay taxes.
June 26, 201214 yr I edited my post after you quoted it, but I thought $13, 000 was the maximum a person was allowed to receive as a gift without having to pay taxes. The person giving the gift doesn't have to pay taxes if it's 13K and under. You (person receiving the gift) would never pay taxes on it no matter what the amount is from my understanding.
June 26, 201214 yr What was she going to do? She can't swat them, she obviously couldn't reason with them. She even said reporting it does no good. I'm sure if they were bulling someone on the bus, she would have tried to step in, but I'm also sure the abuse she already had taken would have been even worse in that situation. As several have already said, kids today are too pampered and too protected. Many of them have no respect, for others or themselves. We've (our society) created these little monsters, now we have to deal with them. The thought that really makes me cringe is when I think of these punks having kids of their own. Can you imagine how they're going to turn out? She's an old lady. She's probably there to observe and report. I would have thought she could have gone up to the bus driver and had him/her turn the school bus back around and take everyone back to the school. This was threatened numerous times when we used to ride the bus. And then the administrators would handle it right then and there. Maybe times have changed quite a bit and that is no longer an option. And I do acknowledge that I said, it was threatened. Edited June 26, 201214 yr by MJAlltheWay24

June 30, 201214 yr I wonder if this discipline decision would hold up on appeal. I do not think it would in KY
July 1, 201214 yr I wonder if this discipline decision would hold up on appeal. I do not think it would in KY Why? I would assume that their suspensions include supplemental educational services.
July 1, 201214 yr Why? I would assume that their suspensions include supplemental educational services. I am sure it is different everywhere, but in my district there is a strong separation of bus behavior and in school behavior. I could see a parent in my district throwing a fit and the punishment being a bus suspension rather than a school suspension. I wouldn't agree, but I could see it happening.

Yes, and I assume that administrators without much intestinal fortitude fall victim to the whim of the parents (and it certainly happens in many places) but if the child is still receiving educational services, then I am not sure that there is a valid complaint.
