^ One thing to catch a home run off Jay Bruce's bat. I'm not totally sure I'd pass that on to a kid. But a ball tossed into the stands by a player? Get real...give the kid the ball.

 

Be tough not to have a few choice words with the guy with your grandson there.

I wonder if the couple had any kids of their own. Sure, it looked bad because the kid next to them was so upset, but what if they took the ball home to their own children?

 

Catching a foul ball at a game next to a little kid is comparable to winning the "split the pot" at a charity event. Everybody wants the prize, but if you win there's an expectation that you'll "pass it forward" by donating the money back (or giving the ball to the little kid next to you).

 

For what it's worth, I probably would have given the ball to the little kid. But my 6 year old nephew would have been very disappointed that I didn't bring it home for him.

 

For what it's worth (part II), if I win the split the pot, I'm keeping the money.

All this makes me not want to catch a ball unless it comes off the bat and I need to save my wife from a Drew Barrymore/Fever Pitch moment.

If it's a foul ball or HR I think it fair game. A ball tossed into the stands is different IMO. Not sure why but it just feels different.

I'd be giving the ball to my brother, for my nephew before I give it to a stranger..nothing against those who do but I think it's unfair to the people who catch it to automatically have to give it to some random kid, unless they trampled the kid to get it in the first place.

I had a very similar thing happen to me with my grandson. My 3 grandkids get to a lot of games with me and we are usually in my seats in right field behind Jay Bruce. My oldest granddaughter gets balls thrown to her all the time by Jay but my 8 year old grandson has never been lucky to get one. We were in different seats one night in the 2nd row and Jay spotted him and even pointed right at him. My grandson had his glove and reached out to catch it and some older clown in front of us grabbed it and acted just like what you said, like it was #715. My grandson reacted the same way and everybody around the guy in the 1st row told him he made a mistake and should give it to my grandson. Not a chance he acted like he had just found gold. Needless to say I would have probably made a scene had it been someone else's kid and I wasn't with my grandson but that's the way some people are.

 

That is much worse than what the people in this incident did. When the player points to the kid and someone takes it, that's terrible. I am shocked that an adult puts that much value on a ball thrown into the stands by a player.

One other comment, as much as everyone is on the people who got the ball, the kid's own parents were laughing at the kid being so upset.

No wonder kids today feel so entitled for things, most of you on here want to give the kids a ball just cause, did the kid catch it, no, oh well next time.

We took my nephew to a game for his first communion years ago. The guy next to us caught a foul ball and said "I've been coming to games for 20 years and never caught a foul ball--but it probably means more to this little guy than it does to me" he then turned the ball over to my nephew. The guy would not let me buy him a drink or hotdog! Made for a great night, since my nephew had his own seat and was old enough to appreciate the kindness of the man.

That darned kid needs to get over his sense of entitlement. If it means that much to him, he should learn how to use his elbows.

Dad should have given his son a beer to hold so the little guy could strategically heave it at the other adult as he dove for the ball.:lol: That seems to happen to me when I go to a game and I don't even go for the foul balls unless they are within arm's reach and I can snag 'em with my cap.

I always look for a little guy or girl if I get a foul ball. The look on their little faces is always worth more than that ball. Anything I can do to get a kid to appreciate the great game of baseball is worth it.

That's fine if you feel that way and if you get one thrown to you, I think it would be awesome for you to give it to a little kid. But some people spend too much time worrying about what others do. They chose to keep it, and to me that isn't a big deal. The kid was just crying because he didn't get what he wanted.
