3rd Region Rankings and Notebook (2/8/16)

Recommended Posts

1.Daviess County(19-5 UP 2) - DC stands tall on top of the 3rd region poll this week, after getting wins over the previous #1 and #2 teams in Catholic and Meade. Stewart Currie remains far and away the best player in the region and having him, makes Daviess County the team to beat heading into the postseason. Andrew Hayden is emerging as a deadly shooter from beyond the arc. Coach Hayden is getting more and more production from his young bench. DC drew 1st place in the 9th district on Sunday. That gives them a first round district matchup with rival Apollo. They have Mclean, Muhlenberg and Hancock County this week.

2.Owensboro Catholic(14-7 DOWN 1) - Catholic came up just short vs DC on Friday. They rallied to take the Panthers to overtime but had no answer for Stewart Currie in the final frame. The Aces bounced back with a nice win over Bardstown on Saturday. Cameron Obryan is starting to hit his stride for the Aces, having a nice week at 18ppg. If Riley can get that contribution for Cam, along with guys like Luke Payne, Luke Hayden and RZ3, the Aces are going to be very tough. Catholic drew the 2 seed in the 9th district, pitting them against OHS in the first round. Coach Riley has a reunion with Warren Central on Tuesday.

3.Meade County(17-7 DOWN 1) - The Waves continued to come up short in big games, with a loss to DC this past week. They got a convincing win over district foe, Cloverport on Friday. That win locks them into the #1 seed in the 11th district tourney, and almost assures them a trip to the 3rd region tournament. Meade has games against John Hardin, Grayson Co and North Oldham this week.

4.Breck County(15-7 SAME) - Breck ended its losing skid this week with an overtime win over upstart Ohio County. Cody Mingus joined the 1000 point club in the win. The Tigers will try to keep things going in the right direction this week, with 3 region games against Edmonson, Butler and Trinity.

5.Owensboro(8-10 UP 2) - OHS split a pair of games this week. They beat Apollo on Thursday night behind a big 2nd half from Jacoby Harris. The Devils were much better on the boards than they showed a week ago. Owensboro fell to a good Southwestern team by 12 on Saturday. The Devils have a brutal schedule to end the year. We'll find out pretty quick how much this team has improved, with games against Bowling Green & Louisville Trinity this week.

6.Edmonson County(14-8 UP 2) - Edmonson got 2 big district wins this week vs Grayson County and Butler County. The Cats have locked down the #1 seed in the 12th district tournament. They will play Butler County in the first round at Grayson County. Edmonson has 4 games inside the region this week vs Breck, Trinity, Ohio and Cloverport.

7.Hancock County(13-10 DOWN 1) - Hancock went 2-1 this week with wins against Livingston Central and Mayfield and a loss vs South Spencer, Indiana. Garrett Pate chipped in nicely in the wins. Hancock has games this week against Ohio County, Evansville Day & Daviess County.

8.Muhlenberg County(10-13 UP 2) - The Stangs are rolling as of late. Coach Stovall has this group playing very well at the moment, winning 4 straight games. Muhlenberg plays at a very fast pace and shoot the ball extremely well. They beat Marshall, Mclean and Hopkins Central last week. Muhlenberg has Butler County on Tuesday and a big regional matchup vs #1 Daviess County on Friday.

9.Ohio County(11-12 DOWN 1) - The Eagles came up short against Breck County on Friday. They had a shot to win the game at the free throw line in regulation, but only hit 1 of 2 to force the game into overtime. Breck dominated the overtime period to get the win. Even with the loss Ohio came out winners on Friday, as Muhlenberg knocked off McLean to help the Eagles secure the bye into the 10th district final. This also assures Ohio a spot in the regional tournament. They have Hancock, Edmonson and South Warren this week.

10.Mclean County(8-13 DOWN 5) - The Cougars let a golden opportunity slip from their grasp, losing a home game against Muhlenberg that would have secured a first round bye into the 3rd region tournament. They bounced back nicely with a 73-56 win on Saturday vs Union County. They have tough regional games this week vs Daviess and Breck Co.

11.Apollo(7-14 SAME) - The Eagles dropped thier lone game this week to OHS. After a promising start, Apollo really struggled in the 2nd half en route to their 6th loss in 7 games. The Eagles are struggling on defense and cant seem to find consistency on offense. The lone bright spot as of late is junior Zach Hopewell, averaging 18ppg. Apollo's hope going forward may hinge on the eligibilty of PG Ben Moss, who should hear something this week on his playing status. The Eagles have games this week at Henderson and vs Lincoln County.

12.Grayson County(10-12 UP 1) - The Cougars ended their 8 game losing skid with a 2 12th district wins against Butler County and Trinity this week. The Cougars will host Trinity in the first round of the 12th district tournament. Grayson has a tough week this week vs Meade, John Hardin and Evansville North.

13.Trinity(12-11 DOWN 1) - Trinity let a big district game slip away in the second half this week against Grayson. A win would have given the Raiders a shot at the #1 seed and Edmonson County this week. Now the Raiders will have to go on the road vs Grayson in the district tournament. Trinity has 4 games on the slate this week vs Edmonson, Owensboro, Breck and Christian Fellowship.

14.Butler County(10-12 SAME) - After a red hot start to the season the Bears have dropped 8 of 9 games and fallen into last place in the 12th district. They will see Edmonson in the first round of district action. Butler has tough games this week vs Breck and Muhlenberg.

15.Cloverport(3-17 SAME) - The Aces have struggled to replace the 7 seniors they lost a year ago. They played Meade County tough in the first half on Friday before fading in the 2nd half. They will get another shot at Meade in district tournament action. They have some winable games this week vs Tell City, Portland Christian and Edmonson County.
