article 2015-16 14th Region Rankings Week 9 (2-1-16)

After getting hit with a blizzard that canceled all of the high school games across the state for 2 weeks, the 14^th Region was finally able to get games back underway last week. Let’s take a look back and look at the updated rankings list.

 

1.Perry County Central (15-3):

The Commodores remain #1 this week, as they have all season long, after picking up two good wins to pickup from where they left off. The Commodores defeated Lexington powerhouse, Lexington Catholic 67-58 on January 26^th and turned around and demolished 15^th region’s Betsy Layne 69-34 in the KY Prep Showcase at Jackson City.

 

The Dores’ won’t have it easy this week as Knott Central (Feb. 2 Tues), Hazard (Feb. 5^th Fri) and Casey County (Sat. Feb. 6) all await them this week.

 

 

2.Cordia (14-6):

The Lions picked up where they left off right before the snow hit. When everyone was able to get back to action last week, Cordia Lions made their way to Frankfort to participate in the KHSAA All “A” Classic State Tournament, where they were looking to win it and knock off 3x defending champ, Newport Central Catholic. The Lions blew by every team they played except for 1 and that was NCC. The Lions defeated Glasgow 77-46 to open up the All “A” State Tournament, then they would go on to defeat University Heights 57-44, earning a date with 3x defending champ, and the Lions would get the same result and that’s a W in the win column as they defeated the Breds 47-41 advancing to the championship game where they met Murray today. The Lions would go on to defeat Murray 62-45 to win the 2016 KHSAA “A” State Tournament.

 

The Lions aren’t scheduled to come back to action until February 9^th when they travel to Richmond to battle Madison Central.

 

 

3.Letcher County Central (15-3):

The Cougars continue to roll over their opponents. Cougars defeated Knott Central 60-47 on the Patriots home floor to improve to 5-0 in district play on their way to a #1 seed in the 53^rd district.

 

Cougars will be tested this week, however. LCC travels to every game this week, Hazard (Tues), June Buchanan (Thurs) and Union VA (Fri)

 

 

4.Hazard (14-3):

Since starting back last week, the Bulldogs picked up 3 good wins, defeating South Floyd 82-61, Sheldon Clark 75-71 (OT) and Estill County 75-43. The Bulldogs continue to get production from Griffin Wells (11 PPG), Austin Spurlock (15 PPG) and newly transfer, Dejour Frazier (11 PPG).

 

The Bulldogs have two huge games this week, hosting #3 Letcher Central on Tuesday and traveling across town on Friday to battle #1 Perry Central.

 

 

5.June Buchanan (16-6):

After dropping 2 then getting a big break due to the winterstorm, the Crusaders got back on the winning side of things upon return to the game, defeating Pike County Central 69-55 and Buckhorn 62-58. Coach Justice continues to do good things at JBS.

 

JBS will host district rival, Letcher Central on Feb. 4^th. Game probably doesn’t really mean anything. LCC is 5-0, JBS is 3-3 so this game really doesn’t have any outcome on who gets the #1 seed in district tournament.

 

 

6.Breathitt County (14-7):

The Bobcats have won 4 straight and are sitting at 5-0 as the season winds down. The Bobcats do have one more district game to play, but much like district 53, district 55 is pretty much set.

 

Breathitt County travels to Powell County on Tuesday, Jackson City on Wednesday, hosts Estill County on Friday and travels to Buckhorn on Saturday. Busy week for the Cats.

 

 

7.Wolfe County (15-7):

Wolves have been hot as of late, winning 7 of their last 9 games including a 4 game win streak and a 3 game win streak that was snapped when the Wolves got heartbroke, falling to district and arch rival, Breathitt County 54-52.

 

Wolfe County hosts both Jackson City (Tues), Model (Fri) and travels to Owsley County on Saturday.

 

 

8.Powell County (8-11):

After losing 2 straight, the Pirates got back on the winning side of things defeating district foe and arch rival, Estill County 43-36 to remain in sole position of the #1 seed in the 56^th district.

 

The Pirates have a busy week, hosting Breathitt County (Tuesday), @ Sheldon Clark (Wed), Lee County (Fri) and @ Knott Central (Sat.)

 

 

9.Buckhorn (8-13):

The Wildcats continue to struggle, winning 2 of their last 7 games including a heart breaking, buzzer beating, half court shot by Jackson City 82-81 in double OT that seen buzzer beaters after buzzer beaters.

 

The Wildcats will host Estill County on Tuesday, Riverside Christian on Saturday.

 

 

10.Knott County Central (7-11):

The Patriots continue to struggle as their losing streak climbs to 6 games. Patriots have won just 1 out of their last 11 games. That 1-10 record started after the Patriots had started the season off 6-1.

 

This week won’t be any easier for the Patriots as they host #1 Perry Central on Tuesday, travel to Jenkins on Thursday and host Powell County on Saturday.

 

 

11.Leslie County (7-9):

When the Eagles got back to action, they took a big L, falling to district foe, Buckhorn 59-52 on their own home court, but it doesn’t matter who goes undefeated in district play, as this district is a blind draw.

 

Leslie County travels to Red Bird on Monday, Owsley County (Tuesday), host Knox Central on Friday and vs. Lee County (@ Buckhorn) on Saturday.

 

 

12.Jackson City (7-14):

The Tigers seem to have gotten things turned around, have won 3 straight and 4 of their last 5 games including an 82-81 double OT win over #9 Buckhorn.

 

The Tigers will travel to Wolfe County on Tuesday, host Breathitt County on Wednesday, travel to Riverside Christian on Thursday and Burgin on Saturday.

 

 

13.Estill County (7-15):

After winning 3 straight (Model, Menifee County and Owsley County), the Engineers had their winning streak snapped, falling to district foe/arch rival, Powell County 43-36 and then getting derailed badily by #4 Hazard 75-43.

 

Engineers have two tough games this week, traveling to Buckhorn on Tuesday and Breathitt County on Friday.

 

 

14.Lee County (4-13):

The Bobcats are 2-2 in their last 4 games including a victory over district foe, Owsley County.

 

 

15.Owsley County (5-15):

Owsley continues to struggle, currently on a 3 game skid with 2 of the losses coming to district teams, Estill County and Lee County.

 

 

16.Jenkins (1-20):

Jenkins has now ran their skid streak to 12 straight games since their last and only victory.

 

 

17.Riverside Christian (1-19):

Since picking up their first win on the season, The Rams have lost 3 straight.
