Hey Sunrise, I'm not positive about the boys. The girls were @ Bourbon last year and Montgomery the year before. I'm pretty sure the boys were played on different nights than the girls, which would make sense so that the fans could support their schools alot easier than they will this year.

You're spot on Cardinal Fan. This would be consistent with what has happened the last couple of years since the realignment. You wonder if GRC could've deferred their spot in the rotation once they realized there was an oversight, so that all the kids could be accommodated. After all, I thought that was the point of high school athletics.

This is not true. Last year both games were played on Monday and the Championship on Thursday. The year before both games were played on Wednesday and the Championship on Friday. It sounds like although the play is not in the gym, the school does not want to compete with it since it runs three straight days. I'm also assuming that the schools agreed to the schedule @ Montgomery for the boys to accommodate the girls. I believe there is an issue trying to get quality officials for all these nights as well. It's a horrible injustice to both the boys and girls, but I think the coaches and administrator were probably handcuffed by some of the limitations due to the conflicts.

One difference I will offer between the boys and girls is the strength of the players. While it may seem officials call girls games tighter, the difference is that many girls are not able to play through the same contact that boys are able to. This goes back to an earlier thread where contact is not necessarily a foul, but when a player gains an advantage through contact it becomes a foul. This is why strength and conditioning is becoming much more important in the girls games.

LCA definitely has the talent for this year and next to remain the cream of the crop of All A schools, but I wouldn't quite say they have a great talent supply. Not to spark a public/private debate, b/c I actually like the private schools, but two of LCA's starters are not LCA grown talent. I'm not sure what their middle school is doing, but I'm sure coach Seamands will do a great job and keep them competitive. But unless they get kids coming in from the public schools they will have to work just as hard as the rest to build their talent.

Well oldguy, we're all going to get to see what's up with Paris tomorrow. They'll face LCA after defeating 20 - 2 Cumberland Co. 53 - 46. They've now held two consecutive teams with a combined record of 40 - 3 to their lowest point totals of the season. It should be interesting to see if they can keep it up. Paris is a defense oriented team. They've only allowed 50 or more ponts three times this season all of which occurred during their 0 - 4 start to the season. At the all A, their offense has not been able to get on track, but they have forced 57 turnovers. They don't hold the ball or run four corners as asked previously, they just haven't been very god on offense at the all A. If you look at their schedule, you'll see that they are holding some of the best teams in the state to low point totals. It may be UGLY, but it's effective.

I think this post brings to light a good point about coaching and refing in general. It doesn't matter who the officials are or how bad or good you perceive them to be, teams must be able to adjust to the officiating. Off the top of my head I cannot remember one call that won or lost a game I have ever watched. Do calls effect the flow of the game? No doubt. But by the fourth quarter of a game, a team should know what to expect from the officials and adjust accordingly. Most officials don't want to decide the games at the end and are going to try to be consistent to what they've been calling the previous three quarters whether you feel they've been good or bad. Officials are easy targets and that comes with the territory, but until you witness a team that has played a flawless game and a coach that has made every correct decision, please quit blaming the officials or put the stripes on yourself and do a better job.

Why were 10th region officials doing this game when the event was not hosted by a 10th region school? As for the assistant, he has to be smarter than that in front of an official. Assistants are not allowed to question officials in such a manner. This has become a focal point of the last several years with the KHSAA.

Final Only stat I heard was sophomore Ebony Rowe with 22 rebounds. Coach Sowers has done a tremendous job with this team over the last 3 years.

It's because the rankings that the papers use are skewed computer rankings. While they are pretty accurate and the only real way to compare teams arbitrarily, I believe if you polled the coaches, there would be some differences. Good job ladies and way to represent KY

I believe there are right at 275 total girls teams playing basketball in the state. Where can you find information on the Class A rules? Below is a link of the current two year average enrollments of schools. http://www.khsaa.org/reports/2006and2007averanegschoolenrollmentbyenroll.pdf Lexington Christian is still one of the 100 smallest, so even though they are tough, they are not even skirting the line. The interesting thing looking at the list is that if it becomes the smallest 125, Notre Dame and Christian Acadmey of Louisville will be eligible with close to 600 students. It really seems like the cutoff should be 400 or less or there abouts. It's great looking on the list and seeing the real small schools that work hard and compete with some of the best teams.

This is a statement that kills me. Nowhere in the referee handbook does it say that fouls must be one for one. It is true that most even out at some point, but it really depends on the type of defenses being played by each team. But this is the statement by fans that I love the most. Fouls are 10 to 1 ref. Call it both ways. They can call both ways and still have lopsided foul counts.

This is a great thread and many good points have been made. As someone who has coached and refereed on the high school level, I will offer my opinion for what it's worth. As for the first above mentioned statement that basketball is not supposed to be a contact sport, that could not be farther from the truth. As several have already responded, there are key fundamentals in the game of basketball that require contact (pick, post up, block out, etc. etc.). These ARE huge parts of the game and I think if we look at that comment we can all agree basketball IS a contact sport. The second highlighted statement is a very big part of basketball and where many younger referees or less experienced referees struggle a little bit. I would call this game management. There are plenty of referees across the state that can call a basketball game, but probably half as many that can actually manage a basketball game. The difference is that managing makes the referee evaluate the game and teams as a whole and call the game according to what is best for that game. There should be a flow to a game and the way a referee calls a game effects how the game flows. This is a concept most fans don't understand b/c fans feel contact means foul which could not be farther from the truth. On a tangent, living in a basketball state it amazes me how ignorant many fans are of the actual rules of the game. I think every coach should make their parents take a basketball rules test every season so they could actually learn what basic rules are. I don't have kids but I love taking in games and the fans almost make it unbearable to sit in the stands and enjoy a game. Back to the point. If referees do control the game early, it is easier to let them play later. Unfortunately we see this in reverse form most of the time, which leads me back to the point of poor game management. Officiating is not easy and until you have actually tried it, you really have no voice. Basketball is great as it is and will continue to change as kids get more athletic, develop different skill sets, etc. If the parents would let the kids play and enjoy the experience, then it might be even better. After all, isn't it about the kids in the end.

That is quite an indictment on a coaching staff and the young ladies that represent the Paris program without stating any claims to back up your opinion. As a coach of a different sport, the dirty tag infuriates me more than other. There are definitely players with short tempers and some may even be dirty, but you better have evdence when you try to label a teenage kid or team dirty. I really hope this is just sour grapes from an upset fan at a close loss to a rival. Most kids play the game to have fun and not get called names. Blame the coaches, blame the refs, but please leave the kids out of your hate. Until they meet again.

LBB, I have not been involved with any city or county schools, but my understanding, and it may be wrong, is that there are allotted funds, either through the state, county or city, that go directly to fund athletic teams. At private schools and independent schools they are soley responsible for raising their athletic budgets. Again, I could be wrong, but this is my understanding of how different athletic programs are run in Kentucky. FYI - At Paris, the coaching stipend is paid by the board and then they are allotted a very small amount of money, which is raised by an annual fundraiser by the city club for Paris and Bourbon county, to pay for travel, shoes, referees, equipment etc. The amount does not even come close to covering expenses for the season.

Most panorama's you go to will have an admission charge. Paris is a small independent school, so all funds do go to help fund the team. They unfortunately do not receive money that other county and city schools receive, therefore they use opportunities like this to raise money. They also did not limit outside food, so teams and individuals did purchase pizza and other food that did not go towards their funds. Nobody was forced to watch the games and while it may seem high, you will find the same thing at other panorama's across the state.

24mom, you are correct that the scores were reset at each quarter. I do think you were also correct that the quarters were split between Paris and Grant. The overall margin was in Paris' favor if I do remember correctly. I could be wrong though.

To the best of my memory, the results were as follows:

LCA has a lengthy application process they administer to each applicant looking to enroll that cover academics as well as personal and family information. I don't know what the exact reason was, I just know that something came up during the process that kept the school from accepting her. I don't think it was negative, just not up to their standards. This could change if she were to try to enroll again, but I don't know for sure.
