My only real pet peeve with officials is the blatant way that they call a girls' game different.

 

Last night boys and girls doubleheader. Boys play first and bodying the dribbler is not called. Physical play is allowed. Shots are blocked.

 

And the SAME TWO OFFICIALS come out and the exact calls they were not calling in the boys game were fouls in the girls game.

 

I watched on Sunday good blocked shots by both teams that were called fouls. The assumption being girls can't jump like that to block shots out of the hand.

 

When I expressed my opinion from the stands, (I know you will be shocked but if I say ONE THING from the stands it is a surprise. I hardly ever say a word from the stands.) the ref gave me the "ref stare."

 

Please Mr. and Mrs. Official, the girls CAN PLAY the same way as the boys do. Call the game the same. The rules or the play don't change just because of the gender. If it is not a foul in a boys' game, it is not a foul in the girls' game.

 

Fans cry for the girls' games to be more exciting like the boys' games but you don't let us play like the boys' games.

 

BTW, thanks very much for the time you put in, the crap you put up with and the time away from your family to allow us to play these games. I really do appreciate your effort and know that you are going to miss one and really only have this one gripe.

I am not complaining about missed calls but when the girls watch a boys game and see a certain type of play allowed and then they come out with the same officials and play the same way and it is not allowed, what's the difference?

Couldn't agree more -- I had a daughter playing 6 years ago in the 9th and it seems to have gotten worse since then.

Shouldn't be a difference. I believe there is only one difference between girls and boys, and it is not something the officials dictate.

I agree. There aren't many clean blocked shots called in a girl's game because I guess people don't think that girls are able to block someone else's shot without it being a foul. It's ridiculous if you ask me. Girls should be allowed to play just as physical as the guy's game, and if physical play is being allowed in one game by refs, then if they do the next game, the same physical play should be allowed for the girls. Let them play!

I agree. I have heard numerous times "we are going to punish her because she is tall", but it seems the athletic girls are the ones who are punished and get called for a foul on a block.

Yeah, and Heaven forbid that a "short" girl try to block someone. That's like an automatic foul, so don't even try it.. ya know? Give the athletic girls some credit, whether they are tall or short. Both can get the job done...and BLOCK.

very good points and I agree with them all. However, I would like to add that officials (mostly MEN) do NOT put forth the same effort in a girls game that they put forth in a boys game. Somehow, many just don't believe it's that important. And I must contest that girls put forth AT LEAST as much effort as boys and many time much more effort. But is the officiating going to change? NOT LIKELY. I do greatly appreciate though the ones who DO work real hard. Funny, you hear a lot of them say at half-court before the game - "We will work real hard for you." PLEASE, don't say it if you really don't mean it. If you're going to talk-the-talk, then walk-the-walk.

There are a few good ones. And who knows, you may get a better effort, seeing they will be out of their comfort zone.

Give em heck Ladies B-Ball coach. I'm not a zebra, but it is my understanding that they are schooled in referee camp to have different focus's (duh) in girls/boys games. Simpy put in a boys game the focus is more on the defense becasue that is where the majority of the fouls occur. In the Girls game the focus is on the ball, hence the over abundence of the feet shuffling traveling calls (my pet peeve) during a girls first move. I'm biased I admit, but the boys get away with that shuffle and the girls do not! Saw it first hand in the Duke-UNC ladies game last night, a young ladies pivot foot never left the sacred hardwood of Cameron before the ball left her hand, yet her move faked out the ref and the whistle blew. I'm with you coach!!!!! Bottom line there are good ones and bad ones lust like in any other line of work....................
