Not surprised by this one. I hope that the government agencies can rid GC of some of the obvious nepotism that has plagued it over the years. There is a man who I think is the obvious choice for the head coaches job in Tim Fraley and lord knows he understands all the political nonsense GC is full of. It will certainly be intriguing to see what happens if the hammer does fall, but We have heard the hammer was going to fall for so long now that we have our doubts, but I believe it would be for the best if it hits hard enough to ring across the bluegrass.

No I haven't heard Mills name yet, but he seems to have been lurking in the shadows. But, I think that he could be joining his father-in-law over across the river at Green Township since their coach is now gone.

So many people have been saying the same thing for a while now Mrs. Albright, but I think it would depend on the bait and Who is casting the rod on whether the big fish in CG would ever bite. You know the big one stays in a spot for a while, but when pressured and their environment is abused they seem to always move to a different spot. Maybe the big one that got away and seems to be roosted in CG is the answer, but I think its too late now the bait at GC is like catfish bait, it just stinks.

Could you be refering to a coach that may have 2 talented sons to boot coming into the Red Devils fold????

I'd tend to agree I've know Clay and Dakotah as well for many years now and I'm afraid that Clay has spent too much time talking to the media. Sometimes a person can say too much and this could be the case. I can see where all of these statements Clay has made could be seen as a slap in the face of the Rose Hill Program, its players, and especially its coaches. I wish everyone luck in this situation and I hope that everything works out, especially for the kids at Rose Hill who have worked hard the last few years.

I agree, everytime the 16th loses a top player the caliber of play goes down. When the 16th was at its best the top teams had players that were not just recognized in our area, but statewide and sometimes even nationwide. Good luck Dakotah and I'm sure will see you in Rupp in the near future at Scott County.

I'd agree with this one as well Roscoe has a great mind for the game and I've enjoyed talking to him in the past at clinics, state tournaments. etc..

Have to agree much respect for Trusty. Good basketball mind and ever a better person, a top notch coach that if he ever wanted to could take a head coaching job just about anywhere.:thumb:

Greenup County under Ward had some great assistant's: Jeff Wilcox: Current Ashland Asst. and Baseball Coach. Coached GC Baseball team to a state runner-up finish in 1996. Son Robbie and Ali standout players for the Tomcats and Kittens respectively. Under Ward tough as nails JV coach, but one of the best people I know. Tim Fraley: Rose Hill Coach and possible candidate for open GC position also former point guard on Ward's 1985 Musketeers that featured Mike Scott at Center. Mike Raby: Standout player for Ward graduated in 1984 and coached under Ward for several years before becoming a principal and now works at the GC Board of Education. Scott Floyd: Graduated from GC and played for Ward. He is the currently the head coach at Raceland and won the 63rd District title in his first season. Also he was a highly successful softball coach for Raceland. Jarrod "Sumo" Plummer: Played for Ward and was a member of the Elite 8 Team of 1997. Coached under Kyle Macy at Morehead State as a student assistant and is now an asst. coach at Hawaii Pacific University. Damon Stephenson: Played for Ward around the same time as Floyd standout player and coached for several years at the college level. Had great playing career at Pikeville College Was the top assistant for Greg Marshall during his big runs into the NCAA tournament at Winthrop. Coached at a Prep school in the Carolina's and now is out of coaching.

This will be the first that I've missed since around 1985 I will be laying on the beach this year instead.

I agree totally great group of players who I enjoyed playing with, as we all grew up in the little league programs and summer league programs together. 1996 was a great year of Baseball at GC. In reality during the 1990's GC Baseball was a great program period. Whether under the leadership of Bob Kouns or Jeff Wilcox Musketeer Baseball was great to watch.

I would tend to agree with this statement. It is sad that a coach would ever tell a kid not to play something that he loves doing.

Matt’s a great kid, who seemed to play for the Tomcats forever. I wish Matt luck in whatever he may pursue in college.

Congrats Brandon. I really think East Carter's program has grown along with Brandon. When he first took the job like a lot of young coaches they lack maturity in the business and I think Brandon has proven that in time we all grow and become better coaches and people. Sometimes the KABC selections leave you scratching your head, but this is a good choice.

Yes Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS) might be the perfect method and that would be staying in house and offering the position to the coach with the most expierence (Coach Fraley).

Well if 360 wins in 20 seasons, and being in the Region semi's and Region Finals nearly every year is boring then what are people in GC wanting. There was only one guy I know who was perfect in this world and he sure as heck didn't coach basketball. I think Ward deserves a medal for valor for all the barrage of hatred he faced in 20 season at GC, sure looks to me like no one else has been able to take the punishment with the multiple coaching changes??? The bottom line is there will never be consistency in Lloyd again until the administrators either wake up or go away and a new crop of people come along to hire someone with stability and thick skin.

Wow I don't know, but I would want a coach that is dedicated to kids and really wants to work for the betterment of the kids and that is what you would get in Coach Fraley. He is a hard working individual who at one time had as much passion for GC as anyone, but after the treatment he has recieved from some individuals I could see why he wouldn't return to the GC sidelines ever.

That was not the norm I assure you and if that was the Lewis County game this year than the Hornets were playing without 3 starters.

Tim would be a great choice as I believe that he would've by now been the successor to Ward. I have more respect for Tim Fraley than could be expressed on this forum. I count him as a good friend and I'd be the first one in line to root for him if he was the next coach of the Musketeers.

Ward did the one thing that all good coaches do and that is play to your strengths and give your kids a chance to win. GC has always had big inside players and fewer dominate guards. Look at Ward's rosters at GC dominated by big and bruising post players. Venture over the river at Coal Grove and you'll see a much different brand of basketball with Ward's Hornets, they play a high pressured 1-3-1 zone, they are guard dominated, and play a quicker paced game. You coach to your strengths that's the bottom line. But, this is a discussion on who'll be the next coach at GC so lets get back on topic.

Greenup kept most of talent during the Ward era, but as with most kids leaving a program it comes down to selfishness and most of it was on the part of the parents. When you have a big school you run into these problems, where as at a smaller school you deal with fewer kids and less controversy over playing time, starting position, etc.. in most cases. GC has run into losing players in other sports in recent years as many football players have seemed to venture a little further up US 23 to Ramland. The trend of losing players to other programs comes from many angles including Academics, Better Facilities, Coaching Stability, etc..

Without a doubt Go it would be amazing to see him walk the sidelines, but I think that he is quite happy at Coal Grove. There would have to be a major shakeup at GC for The General to return, but as they say anything can happen. I would look for Jason Smith to be the next coach. From what I know Sutton is looking for a way out at GC and who's to blame him.

I agree there was a lot of talent, but you also must realize that there was a great deal of talent in the 16th Region in the late 90's as well. In the 1990's the 16th Region had teams that were consistently ranked in the Top 10-20 in the state. Put in the factor that Greenup County seemed to supply talent for others schools in the 16th Region Troy Shelton (Raceland), David Tackett (Raceland), Darrell Arbaugh (Ashland), Jeff Large (Ashland), etc.. In my opinion if Arbaugh and Shelton were added to the 1997 state tournament team GC would've beaten Highlands and would've set up a great Saturday morning game with Paintsville. Most people don't even realize that GC had beaten state champion Louisville Eastern the year before in an invitational tournament. Yet, as a coach once said, "You know, if if and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a one heck of Christmas." It's fun to be nostalgic, but you must live in the present.

Those were great years for the Musketeers and Coach Randy Ward. From 1990-2000 Greenup won 7 District Titles (Four in a row from 1997-00) and 2 16th Region Crowns (1991, 1997). Seven of the ten years they won 20+ games and several invitational tournaments. The 1993 team (24-7), that lost in controversial fashion to Russell in first round of the 63rd District Tournament might have been one of Ward's best, that most forget. Most Musketeer fans I know long for the days when 20 win seasons were the norm and a 63rd District title was nearly a given each season.
