It was mentioned in the Rosco Denny thread that he might be the most famous assistant coach in the state. Who are some others?

 

I'll go ahead and mention a few

Scott Hundley former Mr. Basketball and Vanderbilt stand out and

Billy Ray Fawns of 10th region tournament fame both sit on the Montgomery Co. bench

 

Larry Kihnley, long time assistant at PRP and also writes for Rivals

 

Robby Graham at Clark Co. also does a great job and is well known throughout the state.

Joh Wimzie from Covington Holmes...JW has been there for quite sometime now. Also played on the 1978 State Runner-up Team. Mr. Wimzie does a great job with the kids.

I nominate a guy that was Bobby Keith's assissant for years at Clay County, I think he went by "Big Red". He was by Keith's side in all of his state tournament appearences. While at the state tournament one year they told a story about him when the team was at a pizza restaurant. The waitress asked Red did he want his pizza cut into 12 slices or 6. He told her to "Just cut it in 6 slices, I'm not too hungry.":lol:

Which team in the 10th Region has an asst. coach that resembles this famous man?

A couple that come to mind...E.R. 'Doc' Gray from Harlan. He has been an ambassador for Harlan basketball for many years. Coached both the boys and girls teams as well as Rosenwald back in the day. Super classy guy who represents all that is important in high school sports. Thousands of lives have been positively influenced by Coach Gray.

 

Coach Dudley Mattingly of Scott Co. He probably has more 9th grade victories than any coach in the state. Coach Mattingly has been a big force behind the Cards successes. He is always playing games and developing talent and always finds time to keep a great tan year wide.

Tony Watts was an asst at Holmes for a number of years. Not sure if or where he's coaching now. He played for Mississippi State, I believe when the Bulldogs made the final four.

Does any other coach in the state have their father as an assistant other than at Highlands?

Tommy Huston formerly of Lexington Catholic, built that system that both guys and girls teams play with and that LCA know plays with. Seems to work pretty well having state championships with his system in guys and girls.

Think I read where Tony Watts is now a principal in the Connor school system.

James "Boo" Brewer, who starred at Bardstown HS and played at UofL, is an assistant coach for Paul Childress at LaRue Co.

I agree on Hall. He has one of the most successful records of any head coach in the 16th Region in terms of seasons coached (two at Ashland and two at Rose Hill.)
