Give us who they were, key players, and why they were so good.

The O.J Mayo Rose Hill team that made it to state 3 or 4 years ago.

That can be agreed on. 2003 has some very good teams in our region. Ashland had a great squad that year also, but the boys from the "Hill" got the job done and beat a good South Laurel team in state before losing to Ballard in a game they were up by as much as 13 in.

Also Boyd County had some dandy teams In the 80's and 90's. If i recall correctly they won about 16 District Championships in about 20 years. Not saying they had the best team, but just giving them some props.

1996 Ashland team finished runner up. Not too bad.

Greenup County: The 1983-85 teams at Greenup County, top notch talent and great coaching. To pick between the three teams you might want to pick the '84 team. Even though they didn't win the Region Tournament (They never were the same after Mike Raby injured his knee) they were really a dominate force not only in the 16th Region, but the state as well. The 1997 Musketeers were a nice club as well they finished within a shot of beating Ft. Thomas Highlands (State Runner-up to Lou. Eastern) in the state quarterfinals after being down 20+ points after the first quarter.

 

Boyd County: The squads with Frank Lee were great to watch especially his junior year before the knee injury he suffered. The 2000 Lions with Tyler Zornes and Company were a nice squad as well.

 

Ashland: The 1996 team with Kyle Umberger and company, state runner-up thats enough said. Watching Paintsville and Ashland in the Championship game was great for Eastern KY basketball.

The Rowan County team that went to the state tournament in about 2002 or so was a pretty good team.

Despite losing to Mayo, Dawson, and crew the Morgan County team with Justin Perry, Ryan Williams, Admir Algic, Nick Havens, and others was great to watch. In many ways it was a shame this bunch of hardworking kids couldn't win the region, but sometimes as a coach, it's not your best team that wins the region. Case in point this team as Coach Matthew Perry's Cougars returned the next year to take the 16th Region Crown.

Greenup in the late 90's were great teams. Farrow, McConnell, Meadows, Large (pre-transfer), J. Tackett., A. Tackett, N. Sutton, Griffith. Solid. Always tough to beat no matter who you were.

Those were great years for the Musketeers and Coach Randy Ward. From 1990-2000 Greenup won 7 District Titles (Four in a row from 1997-00) and 2 16th Region Crowns (1991, 1997). Seven of the ten years they won 20+ games and several invitational tournaments. The 1993 team (24-7), that lost in controversial fashion to Russell in first round of the 63rd District Tournament might have been one of Ward's best, that most forget. Most Musketeer fans I know long for the days when 20 win seasons were the norm and a 63rd District title was nearly a given each season.

Greenup Co. also had one of the most talented teams in the early to mid 80's with Mike Scott, Boo Williams, Mark Fuller, Andy Garvin. There was a lot of talent that went through that school that I feel was not used to it's full potential including the 93 team and the 97 - 99 teams.

I agree there was a lot of talent, but you also must realize that there was a great deal of talent in the 16th Region in the late 90's as well. In the 1990's the 16th Region had teams that were consistently ranked in the Top 10-20 in the state. Put in the factor that Greenup County seemed to supply talent for others schools in the 16th Region Troy Shelton (Raceland), David Tackett (Raceland), Darrell Arbaugh (Ashland), Jeff Large (Ashland), etc.. In my opinion if Arbaugh and Shelton were added to the 1997 state tournament team GC would've beaten Highlands and would've set up a great Saturday morning game with Paintsville. Most people don't even realize that GC had beaten state champion Louisville Eastern the year before in an invitational tournament. Yet, as a coach once said, "You know, if if and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a one heck of Christmas." It's fun to be nostalgic, but you must live in the present.

We at GCHS like to help all the teams in the region out. We still to this day provide alot of area schools with great talent. I just wish we would get a thank you note every now and then. Sharing is Caring, and boy do we just stinkin love sharing great athlete's in Greenup. :irked:

Now that's funny! But you're right. We should send out thank you cards to GCHS. I believe that they should be the regional favorite year in, year out based on the population that they have to draw from. Aren't they the largest school in the area? They are the only school district to have two middle schools which should allow for 30 players instead of the 15 that most are able to dress.
