Now that's funny! But you're right. We should send out thank you cards to GCHS. I believe that they should be the regional favorite year in, year out based on the population that they have to draw from. Aren't they the largest school in the area? They are the only school district to have two middle schools which should allow for 30 players instead of the 15 that most are able to dress.

 

Greenup kept most of talent during the Ward era, but as with most kids leaving a program it comes down to selfishness and most of it was on the part of the parents. When you have a big school you run into these problems, where as at a smaller school you deal with fewer kids and less controversy over playing time, starting position, etc.. in most cases. GC has run into losing players in other sports in recent years as many football players have seemed to venture a little further up US 23 to Ramland. The trend of losing players to other programs comes from many angles including Academics, Better Facilities, Coaching Stability, etc..

1993 East Carter Team, Eddie Hale, Jackson Julson, Richie Pennington, Chris Russell.

Were ranked as high as 11th in the State. Won a couple tough matchups and had a couple close losses to some big Lexington Teams. Eddie was/is one of the best guards I've ever seen. Went off for 50 pts against Henry Clay at Clay in a very close loss.

I wish there wasn't so much jeolousy on that team, I always felt they could have one state.

Ward lost quite a bit, and had alot that didnt play for him because they did not fit into the slow down style. Arbaugh, Shelton, Tackett, Large, Shepard to name a few that he lost. There were alot of kids in that high school through the nineties that would have started on any other team in the area but were on 3rd string at GC and ended up quiting.Shane Timberlake for instance in 96 came from Portsmouth where he started as a soph. and a junior, but was 3rd string at GC. Not dogging Ward or his stlye, they both worked well, but alot of great players never got on the floor for Ward. Timberlake could drive the lane and dominate people, but a guard that wanted to run was never going to get a chance.
