  1. LOS ANGELES — Dozens of bottles of low-priced California wines sold under such labels as Franzia, Mogen David and Almaden contain dangerously high levels of arsenic, according to a lawsuit filed by four California residents. The industry group Wine Institute dismissed the lawsuit as “irresponsible,” adding it has not called for any vintner to pull any of the wines named in the complaint from store shelves. The complaint, which seeks class-action status, was filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court. It lists as defendants 28 California wineries. It also asks for unspecified damages and a halt to production of arsenic-tainted wine. “We believe this allegation is false and misleading and that all wines being sold in the U.S. marketplace are safe,” the institute, which represents more than 1,000 California vintners and related businesses, said in a statement. 3. A black student organization at the University of California at Berkeley is demanding the university rename a building on campus after Assata Shakur, a former Black Panther, convicted cop killer and the first woman named to the FBI's Most-Wanted Terrorist List. A jury convicted Shakur of killing a New Jersey State Trooper in 1979. She escaped prison and fled to Cuba. The FBI calls her a domestic terrorist. In 2013, the agency added her to the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorist List, alongside several members of Al Qaeda, airline hijackers and bombers. But to the Black Student Union at Berkeley, Shakur is an "icon of resistance within oppressed communities (who) represents black resilience in the face of state-sanctioned violence." They demanded the university rename Barrows Hall, named after former Chancellor David Barrows, "Shakur Hall." In 2013, Shakur declared her innocence and called her trial in 1979 a legal lynching by an all-white jury. Shakur, formerly known as Joann Chesimard, belonged to the Black Liberation Army at the time of the shooting. 4. A group of more than 5,000 mothers with babies born in 1982 in Pelotas, a medium-sized city in southern Brazil, were asked about their feeding regimes. The cohort was followed-up several times over the next 30 years, and 3,493 of those babies were available as adults for a concluding set of examinations. The highest-achievers were those who were breastfed for between six and 11.9 months. They had a mean IQ of 101.3 points, compared with 96.4 for those who were breastfed for less than one month or not at all. The six-to-11.9-month group also had a mean 12.1 years of schooling, compared with 10.9 years in the group that was fed by other methods. They also had a monthly income of 1,915 reais ($588), compared with 1,238 ($380) for the non-breastfed group. Babies who breastfeed have higher IQs and get paid more as adults ? Quartz

The pledge was read in Arabic during Wednesday morning announcements at Pine Bush High School, located 65 miles northwest of New York City. Some students were angered and responded with catcalls. District Superintendent Joan Carbone told the Times Herald-Record of Middletown that she received complaints from residents who lost relatives in Afghanistan and from Jewish parents. The Arabic reading of the pledge has “divided the school in half,” Carbone told the newspaper. Outrage After Upstate NY School Recites Pledge Of Allegiance In Arabic « CBS New York
  6. WASHINGTON — The White House is removing a federal regulation that subjects its Office of Administration to the Freedom of Information Act, making official a policy under Presidents Bush and Obama to reject requests for records to that office. The White House said the cleanup of FOIA regulations is consistent with court rulings that hold that the office is not subject to the transparency law. The office handles, among other things, White House record-keeping duties like the archiving of e-mails. White House office to delete its FOIA regulations

  18. Twelve years ago Tuesday (March 10), Maines made her infamous comments about the Iraq war and president George W. Bush onstage in a London theater. “Just so you know, we’re on the good side with y’all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.” Taking to her Twitter account Tuesday, Maines addressed the incident again, and it looks like she’s still standing her ground. 19. PITTSBURGH -- Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger signed a five-year contract that should allow him to play his entire career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. "This is where I want to be," Roethlisberger said Friday afternoon with chairman Dan Rooney, team president Art Rooney II, coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Kevin Colbert among those watching his news conference. "It's an incredibly fair deal for both sides, and we're just excited to move forward and get some more Lombardi Trophies in that room next year." Roethlisberger has led the Steelers to their only two Super Bowl titles since the 1970s, and the 11-year veteran is coming off a Pro Bowl season in which he established career highs in passing yards (4,952), completions (408) and completion percentage (67.1). He turned 33 on March 2, but Colbert said in January that the Steelers believe he is getting better and can continue to play at a high level into his late 30s, as Tom Brady and Peyton Manning have done.
