wildcatfan replied to FANOFTHE11th's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
Then why have them? What is the purpose? Why not just name an all-star team and leave it at that? -

I believe Flannery is getting a look at James Madison as a preferred walk-on and had an offer as a preferred walk-on at EKU. -

They aren't actually in JUCO division. They are in a different division for community colleges. Can't remember the name of the league. I think they finished 3rd this year and won it a few years ago. -
Players at the next level.

Flannery did receive a walk-on offer at NKU and also got one to James Madison. Lincoln Memorial is supposedly off his list now. -

Here is what I have heard: Christian Brewer has committed to play at University of Cincinnati-Clermont. Mike Gabbard is third on Morehead's list of guards and has some interest to walk on at NKU, and previously turned down a scholarship offer to D2 Ashland. Ryan Popp has offers to play at University of Cincinnati - Clermont, Thomas More, Wilmington, and Mt. St. Joe's, and previously turned down a walk-on spot at NAIA Ohio Dominican, with Clermont and Thomas More being the front runners. Andy Earls has offers to play at University of Cincinnati-Clermont and Wilmington, with Clermont being most likely if he plays. Austin Flannery has a scholarship offer from Walsh and is getting looks from D2 Lincoln Memorial and possible walk-on at NKU. Corbett has an offer to play at D3 John Hopkins and interest from Centre. -
Who would you vote for Mr. Basketball?
wildcatfan replied to bigblueinsanity's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
They worked for this since middle school, when Justice, Hatfield, Newsome, (and others?) were held back. The extra year definitely did not hurt. It can be comparable to a team of seniors playing against a team of juniors when there are several hold-backs on a team. -
Yes, they can help. These types of colleges can be as much as 30,000 a year just be for tuition, so even with aid and academic scholarship, some students will still have a considerable expense. Those two are good schools. A lot depends on affordability as to the players who end up playing at schools like this. This is not to say they aren't good players, however.
-
Yes. No D3 schools can provide athletic scholarships.
-
Seems unlikely he could get Mr. Basketball when he wasn't voted the top player in his region this year.

Ryle: Stauffer Conner: Flesch, Hodges, Robinson Boone: Montgomery, Brown Holmes: Rice Holy Cross: Burger Dixie: Pike, Hatton, Trammel Cooper: Bradley Highlands: Stewart Covcath: Thelen Newcath: Giesler

That is an impressive game.

I know fans are biased toward their own players, but does the lobbying and campaigning on bluegrass preps make a difference in who is selected Mr. Basketball?
-
Exactly.

But W. Jessamine had a very easy draw last year. Did they beat Lex Cath? No comparison between Class A and big schools usually, with a few exceptions here and there. What good teams did they beat from those areas? I know Polson's team split with Boone County, but didn't look any better than Boone's guards in those games to me.

What about great players who are on strong teams and don't have to carry the load? Does that mean they are less of a player or any less deserving. Its easier to put up higher stats when you are the only or one of your only team's choices, and/or you have a weaker opponents.
