  1. Some players are actively recruited and scouted over a period of time, even by D3 schools. D3 players cannot receive athletic scholarships but can be offered varying amounts of institutional grants and academic money. D3 coaches scout/recruit certain players at AAU tournaments and visit high school games to show interest to players they are already interested in. I believe committed means they have been asked to play by the coach , have been offered a financial aid/academic scholarship package, have told the coaches that they are going to play, they enroll/register, and sign to accept any offered grants/aid, etc. and play. In short, they are committed to playing there. I don't believe there is an binding letter of intent signed at the D3 level like at D2 and D1. The signing ceremony/action is optional for ceremony/publicity and is not an NCAA reuirement for D3 schools since they don't/cannot offer academic scholarships.
  2. Actually the last 6 years. David McFarland was a walk-on with an academic scholarship. I don't know if Rasso received an athletic one or not. Boone has had too many good teams and players not to have had more players receive athletic scholarships. How many athletic scholarships have come out of other NKY schools like Covington Catholic, Holmes, Ryle, Newport Catholic, Bishop Brossart, Highlands, Dixie, Simon Kenton, Walton Verona, etc. in the last 6 years?
  3. McFarland and Popp's fathers did the work with college coaches. I believe McFarland and Popp may have gotten much or all of their college interest through AAU ball, and the parents followed up on it. Popp's recruitment had very little to do with his school team.
  4. Latest I heard is that he will try to walk on at NKU or EKU. I heard that Asbury couldn't provide enough scholarship money. I hope he lands somewhere.
  5. Wabash Valley got some strong KY recruits. I think Transy also got some nice KY players. Thomas More, Pikeville, and Union all have a bunch of local recruits. 6. I don't see how this is possible with basketball. Schools would have too many kids on the team. Even the D3s do recruit players who they feel will help them win. They might also take some players who come to them, and it is up to those players to earn their PT on varsity. Soccer and football teams carry a lot more kids. TM basketball probably dresses more kids because they press the whole game and run kids in and out to spell the starters. Also, 20+ kids can be on the team just like high schools, if there is a JV team.
  7. Thomas More appears to play about 8 to 10 guys a game for at least 10 minutes because of their up-tempo style. The top 5 all average between 15 to 25 minutes usually. Looks like they had about 20 total between JV and varsity. Several of the JV players didn't see much varsity time. TM also gives out academic awards from $4500 to $7000 to most of their students who qualify. Some players can go to these type of schools very cheaply after this and financial aid. Good school and environment.
  8. I think they only lost 3 seniors? On their web site, it looks like they had about 20 on their roster last year. I have seen about 6 or more incoming recruits mentioned this year. Probably some of the existing underclassmen on the team won't come back due to playing time, academics, finances, etc.? I'm guessing that this type of turnover is common with the smaller schools?
  9. Cotton is a great athlete. I'm guessing he prefers baseball.
  10. If you want a spot, and you were one of the better players on your high school team, I think you can latch onto a D3 team. Some hangers on who weren't actively recruited could be relegated to JV most of their college time, and others are looked to be significant contributors or start on the varsity team. Many kids who choose D3 schools have options to play at larger schools but choose D3 for various reasons, like academics, distance from home, etc.
  11. This is true with many D3 and NAIA schools, but TMC does seem to play a lot of players, especially guards, due to their up-tempo, pressing style of play and dribble-drive offense.
  12. Agreed! Popp was recruited by them and other small schools starting last year. Good to see him end up at a local school. Would like to see more Boone players get the opportunity to play college ball. Although I still think Gabbard will also end up playing somewhere, there was only one Boone graduate go on to college ball last year (McFarland), one the year before (Krohman), and none that I know of the two years before that.
  13. In that situation, I believe that team had injured, sick, or missing players who were just as good as the replacement. Tate Nichols had a broken foot. They had to add a player because of that. I think they only had 8 players for the tournament. The kid from Ohio was a contributor but by no means carried that team in that tournament by himself. McDaniels, Gabbard, Earls, and Popp all had good tournaments. Gabbard, Earls, and Popp led the scoring in the championship game for the SS-KY McFarland team. Like it or not, this type of thing happens all of the time, and in this situation, it was perfectly legal.
  14. I believe Guyn is technically ineligible to play in AAU tournaments with this age group because of his age.
  15. I would not say Justice is better than Sewell. Both are good players. Justice had 3 teammates in Hatfield and the Newsomes that were all "redshirt" seniors, and Justice was also one. Besides Corbett and Epley, Sewell didn't have as much help. I also think Sewell has more potential to be a better college player because of his athleticism and size.
  16. Congrats to Austin! Looks like the move to Scott County paid off!
  17. I don't believe Flannery has signed yet. As I understand it, he received an offer.
  18. He was obviously the best player on his team, but when W. Jessamine played Boone Co., I thought both of Boone's guards played better. That being said, I wish him luck. It is a lot of kids' dreams to play for UK.
  19. Word is that Popp will either end up there too or Clermont. I'm sure with any D3 schools, it also comes down to affordability and amount of financial aid.
