  1. What do you mean by ground up? I'm just asking in your opinion how the whole structure should work. The HS needs a staff. They have been running on a skeleton crew. There are MS and freshman staffs that have more coaches. At some point the players have to step up and say they are going to make things change. Now there are a number of factors that go with that and I think that is changing some but it doesn't happen over night.
  2. Grant has a number of limitations that are tough to work with. The location makes it hard to get additional coaching staff. There are very few teaching openings in the county to bring in coaches. The school has went through 4 HC in the past 10 years and thats with Coach Davis being there 6 of those years. Of the current staff I believe no one has been there longer than 2 years. The current Sr and Jr class is thin in numbers and talent. The freshman and sophomore classes have larger pools of talent if they continue with the program (don't move or give up playing). This past year in the weight room there was very good progress. Players doing things in the offseason has been an issue in the past. Administration wise there have been a number of posts on here before that describe people's point of view on that. I think the comparison to Scott is fair. What has changed Scott in part is a HC that has been with the program for about 7 years or so (he was the OC before) and having a couple of strong classes back to back. They had success as Jr and now are building on that as Sr. They have gotten out of the "here we go again" attitude and that is a tough cycle to break. Now the bad thing I think people have no clue about what a marching bad can get away with. One I will say I have never been around a county in which marching band was such a big deal and that goes for both school districts. I think one reason it is a big deal at Grant is because there is this rivalry with Williamstown (who has the most athletic band in the state because of limited fall sports and such). There are days that sports teams are not allowed outside due to heat and the band is marching on black top. In the past they practiced during school hours (think of it as having an athletic period with pretty much your whole team at once year round). They have MS through HS students all involved in the program and pretty much year round. They are not restricted by any rules or anything close to the KHSAA nor do they truly compete with other sports for people. Lets face the fact it is much easier to replace a trumpet player who is 3rd on the right then a left tackle. The point to all of that is if a football team (or any sport) could do the things a marching band could do then yeah your team would put a better product on the field but that isn't the case.
  3. Good lord that was fast. Yes he is now in the 50/50 club. I think he only needed one but it doesn't really matter.
  4. I don't know if I phrased things poorly, if people aren't reading things or a combination of it all. I will attempt to clear this up. I made a comment about people being up in arms about Wirth running a play up by 2 pts because I read malachicrunch's post talking about "all the banter in the other thread". I never said anything about him (malachicrunch) being up in arms or upset over it at all. The quote from malachicrunch made it sound as if other people were sensitive about it. Once again I never said anything about him being sensitive about it or having an issue. stinkyboy II quoted me and stated "Not sure who you think is up in arms over this." I used the quote to explain why I was under the impression people were upset about it. Now to clear up some other things http://crazycola.com/Clock/Takeaknee57-80.pdf If you go to page 7 of the above there is a chart that tells you by number of timeouts how much time you can run off the clock. Yes team do use these charts and/or do the math quickly in their heads but a chart helps prevent mistakes. Depending on the amount of time left a team can run off time without running a play. From the details of the game it appears as if CCH did not need to run a play. According to some Coach Wirth thought he had to run a play to run out the clock. There is a simple solution when it comes down to these types of cases where you can get the benefits of running a play without snapping the ball. The clock must be running though for this to work. The offense runs the clock down to 2 sec left on the play clock and then someone false starts. The play is never run and the ball is reset. the clock starts on the ready and the offense gets another 25 sec to run off the clock. You can run off to close to 50 sec or so off the clock doing this.
  5. It was this statement that gave me the impression people were sensitive about it. The portion referring to banter.
  6. Yes there are charts you look at that tell you compared to time outs if you can run out the clock. There are of course of options to taking a knee to run out the clock like qb sweep and he falls down before contact. 19-17 game and a team runs a play and scores and people are up in arms. Up 30 or so I can see it a little. Do people feel that slighted because they lost by 8-9 points instead of 2?
  7. Scott county's best classes are just soph and jr. They are legit. If they can beat T this year it will go a long way for them getting over the hump. I think after last year they feel they can play with them. A win against them will make them feel like they belong. I compare to when Male and T were going at it. Feeling like you have a legit shot and knowing what it takes goes a long way.
  8. What was "The Band Played On" game? I know in 87 there was a fight in the playoffs between Shelby Co and I believe Holy Cross after the game. I'm fine with the no handshake thing. If you work in education you know how much things have changed with kids, parents and schools.
  9. I agree you don't change who you are as a team. If you throw the ball as a team then or you blitz as a defense then by all means do what what you do. Do it with your frosh and jv players. Leaving in your starting qb or rb or whoever when up by 4-5 scores is taking an unneeded risk among other things. The onside kicking while way up isn't really any different. Maybe that HC wants to "work on" his onside kick in live game because it's better than doing it in practice. Heck he could even say that if he doesn't recover it he is giving the other team a short field. Or he could just say if you can't stop it then it's not my fault you are that over matched. That is pretty much what one is advocating by saying keep your starters in so they can throw 10 tds or get 500 yds rec in a game. I've never knocked HHS, BG, Trinity or any other school. If a score gets out of hand it happens. I don't have a problem with that. I wouldn't expect a team to play any less hard or to play outside their system. Leaving kids in to put up huge numbers because you can I do have an issue with.
  10. I'm talking as a coach. Heck if I could I would ban 4 wheeler use and all types of stuff from my players because they do some stupid stuff. As a coach I can do things that would lower the percentages of my players getting hurt. Still does happen. If the game is in hand I don't need to leave starters in to pad stats or to make sure everyone knows how over matched their opponent is. For years on here Matnney ( I don't know the guy or have every watched his teams) has been blasted for doing things to pad his players stats. Also I don't see it as fair to compare getting run off the court in basketball to wait people are talking about in this thread. The dog references are pretty poor too. In some of these cases the poodle had no choice. It was forced to be placed in the fighting ring with the pit bull. Also why restrict this to just powerhouse teams?
  11. I never said anything about sportsmanship. I'm talking about managing a team and not taking unnessecary risks. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.
  12. Being "forced" to go to a performance be it a play or musical performance is pretty standard practice for all insert art form appreciation class. These classes are also commonly taken as freshman or sophomores because they are part of the school's general education requirements.
  13. No injury is good for whatever the reason. If your starting qb takes a cheap shot trying to throw his 9th TD of the game up by 40 and you lose him for the season was it worth it? A kid having 400+ rec yards in a game and then gets hurt while having a D1 scholarship and ends his season is it worth it? There is a difference between taking unnecessary risks and the price of doing business. What would one be attempting to prove by putting a player in such a risk?
  14. True but there is a thing about taking unneeded risks. What happens if some 16 year old kid reaches a breaking point he normally wouldn't and takes a cheap shot? Yeah those things could always happen but you can do things to put the percentages more in your favor.
  15. Unlike Tribe Called Quest the OP didn't give much of a scenario. The thread was just a topic and some quotes. So if I was given much if a scenario I might of given a more in depth response. From a coaching stand point I have some typical reasons some teams might do it.
  16. You do not have to slow down the clock just to get a play in. The play click starts on the ready for play whistle which has nothing to do with a running clock. As well coached as HHS is they should be able to sub with no issue or get a play in (they are no huddle correct?). Mass subbing and such is a typical reason.
  17. There are times they have improved some but they are very young. Those young kids are still trying to figure out how to act on Friday nights. Its still a little bit of a cluster.
  18. I think in MA they suspend the coach for a game if the score gets out of hand.
  19. The two titan teams got their name from remember the titans. Mercer did it because they consolidated like the movie. Collins did it by a vote from the students.
  20. Unless the bus breaks down on the way to the game Grant doesn't beat Cooper.
  21. Many schools have two versions of lockdown. One where they lock doors. No students outs and they are on alert. The other version is in the case that someone is in the school where you make the room appear empty.
  22. I have no clue if he would ever leave and I don't think he would do it for the reason I'm going to state. Let's say he wins this year. That is 3 in a row and 4 in 5 years. Dynasty would fit in most peoples' point of view. He won 1 at LSU. So go to Texas and then he would have 6 titles and would of won 1 at 3 different schools. At that point it would be hard to say he wasn't the best ever. I'm sure he wouldn't do it for those reasons but it is fun to kick the idea around.
  23. Sorry I hit post before I finished so that didn't come across with the rest of the post. He also had a book which contained the offense he ran at Highlands which is pretty interesting. A movable back that would add gaps to the OL and could be used to trap and wham along with go out for the pass. Very creative stuff. The air option book you mentioned has some great stuff on how to isolate defenders
  24. I understand where or why people think there is the same numbers of gaps. Take a 44 defense for example against 2 TEs and then against 2x2 look. ....E.T.G.C.G.T.E...... ...E.....T.....T.....E... .....B....B....B.....B There are 4 gaps to each side of the center. You have 8 defenders for 8 gaps and 4 of those defenders have to cover a zone or a receiver. Your OLB or your DE have contain which in this case is D gap. ............W...............................W ..E....................T.G.C.G.T......................E .............B.........E.T.....T.E..........B............ ..C.......................B.....B........................C In the two TE look there is a bubble over the C and T. In the 2x2 there is only a bubble over the C. The defense has been compressed due to the lack of a TE. To a defensive coordinator in the 2x2 look there really isn't a D gap. The DE still has contain so he is still responsible for the widest gap which in this case is C gap The LB has flat or man so by pass coverage responsibility takes away anything that goes beyond. The end of the line of scrimmage helps determine where your contain or force player plays. It is most common to count the number of gaps from contain in.
  25. He published that in 1985 and Homer Rice on the Triple Option is 1973.
