I see your point. But what happens when those officials retire? You're stuck with officials who are inexperinced when it comes to the Sweet 16. While I see the point of your statement, I do believe that this is the best process for the future of officiating. In Referee Magazine, he states his reasonings behind his process. He likes to bring in new but qualified officials to work with the veteran officials during the Sweet 16. He doesn't say that an official can only work 2 tourneys in his/her career, just that he doesn't like to give the same official the opportunity year after year after year. If this wasn't the process, we would probably have a great tourney for about 10 years and then the officiating would suffer from lack of experience on that level. I definately think this is the best process for the overall well being and future of KY officials.

First off, let me say that these are just my opinions and thoughts. I have not spoken to anyone from the family, coaching staff, or friends and I'm just thinking out loud. I have nothing but respect for the Eutons and wish them well. With that said, I don't believe that basketball was the reason for the need to move. He already has a scholarship offer at the winningest school in NCAA, so he won't "upgrade" that area of his career. The reason for moving AWAY from the area could have to do with basketball. I would think that if the Eutons really wanted to stay in the area that someone would offer him a job in this area. Maybe Dakotah wanted to play at Rupp before his career was over and with Elliott returning everyone (with Jackson rumors), he doesn't see that as a possibility at Rose Hill. Like I said, I don't think bball was the reason for the need to move, it would almost have to beed a consideration for the place they move. I think they would only be exhibiting good parenting if that were the case. I know that mostly every parent would do the exact same thing if you had a child with his skills. You would do whatever you thought was best for that child, no matter what everyone thought about it and I'd say the Eutons are doing just that.

Boucher explains his process for picking officials in last month's issue of Referee Magazine and he states that he doesn't like to send the same official more than 2 times in a row, so 5 times in a row would be a major stretch for him. He states that he wants to give other the opportunity to call the Sweet 16.

I agree with your point about the turnovers but a team with 24 wins can still have weak points. Not trying to start an argument, I wasn't at the game. I just saw this post and and that thought came to mind. That's all.

I think there is a big difference between 2 and 3 man crews. I don't think though it is enough to throw an official off his/her game come postseason time because if you are working in the postseason then you have had plenty of experience at the 3 man mechanics. Most every school uses 3 man crews for district games and some prefer them for the entire year. It is completely up to the school to determine whether they want a 2 or 3 man crew. Some school cannot or refuse not to afford a 3 man crew for many games. You have to have a certain number of varsity games to work postseason and only the best of those are chosen for districts and regionals. I think most schools will soon be using 3 man crews for all of their games in the near future, at least in the 16th region. I have spoken to some coaches who prefer a 2 man crew to officiate their games because they feel as though 3 men crews are too focused on watching "their area" instead of just calling the game. I myself disagree, I think alot more gets missed on 2 man crews. That is just the nature of the beast, it's impossible to have every angle and every player covered using a 2 man crew. As an official, I would definately prefer a 3 man crew because I believe that the game is covered better if worked properly. There is always going to be calls missed in basketball but I think that the more officials on the court than the less likely for missed calls. I don't think it's a good idea for an official to tell a coach that "..it wasn't my area". There are better and more appropriate things that you can say to a coach other than that. But overall, I think the 3 man system has more coverage and better positioning than the 2 man system and that is the most important thing in making the call and getting it right.

This may just be the most ironic thing that I have ever seen!!! Absolutely HILARIOUS!! Well, every month I eagerly wait the arrival of my favorite magazine "Referee Magazine". When I receive the magazine each month I usually turn to an editorial written by the same person every month and then I continue to read the magazine thoroughly, never really paying too much attention as to who is on the cover. After about a week of having the March 2008 issue, as the magazine was lying on my desk, I happened to look at the cover pretty well and I thought.... "Hey, I know that official!" Well, it's happened to be an offical from Louisville that consistently calls in the Sweet 16. As I'm relishing a KY official on the cover, I just happen to look in the background of the photo and I reconize that the photo was taken at Rupp presumably during the Sweet 16. As I look at the photo more, I notice the background and who do I see? DICKY MARTIN!!!!!!! Yes, DICKIE MARTIN!!! Dickie Martin is on the cover of this month's Referee Magazine. That just may be the most ironic thing that I've ever witnessed before in my life. That is absolutely hilarious. I'm going to send an email to Dickie and inform him of his cover shot, I think he will be quite amused by the shot. I know that I was!!! They shot an incredible percentage from behind the arc. Congrats to the Lady Vikings on their 16th Region crown. The Kittens showed heart in the 4th quarter. Rowan made numerous plays that would have broken most teams but the Kittens fought hard and never gave up, it's a testiment to their character. The Lady Vikings' defense was just outstanding and they pressure the ball handler all night long. The Kittens will be right back there next year with the nucleus of the team returning for their senior year. I commend the Kittens on a fantastic year and while it's disappointing now, thank goodness that most of them have another year and another shot at making it to state. I commend Ali Wilcox for the character she showed throughout the year in dealing with the adversity put before her this year. She was injured this year and missed many games but she never quit working hard to get back and it payed off in the end with a great tourney and an all-tourney selection for her. She was constantly working in the gym at her game and I doubt there is a harder worker in the region than Ali. I know she will now work even harder to help her team get back to that game next year and that says alot about her.

Nothing against Coach Floyd at all but I don't think he has been a HC long enough to rank at #1, especially above the likes of Zornes and Cooksey. I think he has a really bright future and I think he is a good coach but some of these coaches have some impressive accomplishments. I agree with Hicks though as much as I hate to say it. I hate how he acts on the sidelines along with his antics about the officials but I have to admit that he can coach basketball. But like I said earlier Boss, I respect your opinion and I stand by that!!

Is this for basketball registerations? Isn't it a bit late? But anyway, they will send you a card in the mail telling you that you are registered with the KHSAA. That's how you know that you passed.

That's fair enough!! You are entitled to your opinion and I respect that. You could think that I was horrible official but I would still respect your opinion. I know how difficult this job really is and I know all the hard work and dedication that goes into becoming an official and so I tend to be a sympathizer of officials. Sure, everyone has a bad game every once in a while but that doesn't make you a bad official but unfortunately the people who saw you call that night more than likely have already formed an opinion of you as an official. I'm not saying that that is the case with you, at all. I see these officials call on a regular basis and I know what officials are at the top of the ranks. They are ranked there by area coaches who see them regularly. You may not like Joe as an official but the area coaches who have had him numerous times throughout the year ranked him at the top and that has to account for something. People who know basketball in and out ranked him at the top. That alone would make me think if I were you. Fans tend to look at officials through school colored glasses and that just isn't an honest way to form an opinion of an official. Again, I respect your opinion and just know that there are many people in the area and state who know basketball and officiating that believe that Joe is a very good official.

The sky is the limit for Marla and who's to say she won't make the NBA, not me. It would be very difficult and she would make the WNBA first but if she has the right training she could possibly make the NBA one day. She has all the tools that they look for, she can get up and down the court, she knows the game well, she sees the game well, and they will train and mold her into the official they want her to be.

Congrats to Bobby, Joe, and Marla for being chosen to represent the officials of the 16th region. We have many quality officials who could have been chosen but they hit the nail on the head with these three. They are the top tier of basketball officials in the state. I cannot say enough about Bobby Hall and his commitment to officiating. Not only is he THE top notch official but he gives back to officiating by helping the younger officials succeed and that says alot about an official. He has helped me tremendously in basketball officiating to continue to get better and better. I had the honor of calling my first varsity boys game with him and it is a memory that I will not forget. I also got to call that game with my father and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. It was a complete honor to share that experience with them both. Bobby is the consonant professional on the court and any upandcoming official need only to look to him to see the standard. He has recently been hired as the assigning secretary for football and I know he will bring that same professionalism, commitment, and passion to football and will lead us to a bright future. Joe Billman is also a consonant professional and a top notch official. He works many hours training and assigning young officials for the future of our area. He does an excellant job when it comes to teaching young officials. I don't think people realize the work that guys like Joe, Bobby, Daryl, and others put into local officitating. Not just calling games but also training and assigning and many other tasks that go unnoticed by the public and it's all for your kids. Guys like Billman don't drive an hour each way to a school and miss time away from his family because of the pay. They do it for the kids and for their love of the game, sometimes I think people forget that. Now I don't know Marla too well and have only worked with her a couple of times but I do know this, she has a bright future in officiating if she chooses. I have been impressed with her everytime I see her call and every time I think "Wow, this girl can call". It's only fitting that she becomes only the 2nd women to call at the boys Sweet 16. She will do an amazing job not only at the Sweet 16 but also at the NAIA Tourney in Missouri. I wish her nothing but the best in Mizzu. I'll say this, this girl will be in the WNBA one day if she chooses to pursue officiating to that level. And this year's Sweet 16 just may be her last HS game she ever calls. I'd hate for the 16th to loose her but she's got bigger games ahead of her in her future. Good Luck to Bobby, Joe, and Marla at the state tourneys this year. I know you will represent the best of what the 16th region has to offer the officiating world.

I'm sorry but that's not true at all. Bobby Hall, Joe Billman, and Bob Craft all went to the Sweet 16 and called numerous games and they all represented the 16th region. The way I understand it to be, it's almost a given that every official who is chosen for the state tournaments gets more than one game. I will find out from someone who has the state tourney experience and would know. There aren't that many officials chosen and they use 3 officials for every game, so that would have to mean that each official gets at least 2 games and the best rated officials are chosen for the Final Four and championship on Saturday. I know that the official does not know who he will be calling until the day before or even the day of the game and they keep it very secretive. They are not supposed to inform anyone of what game they will be calling.

Joe DID work more than one game at last year's Sweet 16 and he represented the 16th region well throughout the whole tourney.

:thumb: I was at a game of a 5th grade tourney last night and almost had a fight breakout between the fans. It was just ridiculous!!! The fans thought that the official were cheating them because they were from out of state and they acted like complete idiots in front of all those kids. Like IDIOTS!!! They screamed and hollered some of the craziest stuff a the officials who they believed were flat out cheating them because 1 team shot twice as many FT's in the 2nd half than the other team shot. But before some of you say..."Well, that means the officials were bias", let me inform you of a few things. For one, even thought this means little to mean but some of you hold great importance to it, the foul count was 11 to 9. The team who shot the more FT's grabbed 3 times as many rebounds as the other team and most of those were offensive rebounds. Every time the team would miss a shot or a FT, a teammate would get the rebound and draw a foul on the put back. But out of all the reasons that I've listed, the biggest reasons why the differential in FT's was aggresiveness, fatigue, and frustration!!! One team got fatigued and frustrated and led to aggresive contact which will lead to FT's. But even none of this justified the way that the fans reacted as they walked out screaming with time still remaining on the clock with the boys looking on. The officials had to stop the game because a fight was about to break out between the adults. There was a 10 min delay in the game while the situation was resolved ultimately by the police. And now the tourney might be done with as a whole because of that incident and that's a shame. The kids are the ones who will suffer for the actions of a few crazy idiots.

Some of the smaller associations might have this problem.

Good Post!! I was surprised in the least to see this story. It always seems like Hicks is saying something about the officials or acting like a madman on the sidelines. It's a shame too because I think he's got a lot of potential to become an extraordinary coach. He knows basketball and he knows how to coach great defense and win games but his mouth always gets him in trouble. Like you stated above, I'm sure he knew well in advance the situation of the official and I'd say that that official has called many Fraley games in the past with no complaints from losing coaches. Hicks is just sour about losing as always.

Team Control.

I hate to hear......"Over the back, He's over his back!!!!!". I wish people would say "He's pushing him" because that would be the correct term. Watch the officials report the foul, you shouldn't ever see an official say " Foul...Red #32.....Over the Back". The rulebook says it is a push and nothing about over the back. Also, if a player dives for the ball and slides on his/her butt the 1st thing you hear is "He traveled" or "Walk!!!" but actually no violation has occurred. I could go on and on about some of the dumb things fans say. LOL!! The funniest ones are the older ladies who think they know how to coach AND officiate. They think they can see everything and the official is blind. It's hilarious some of the things that come out of their mouth.

I think he's saying that if A1 commits a player control foul on B1 and the foul is Team A's 8th team foul, B1 would not shoot the bonus. I think that is what he's trying to say. The 1st scenerio above wouldn't be a player control foul. This is a topic we recently discussed at our local association meeting. I could be wrong but I think that this is what he talking about when he says player control fouls are not rewarded with the bonus.
