I have a question for any basketball officials about a non-call last night in the Bryan Station vs Catholic game.

 

Here is the situation.....

 

Early in the game, and Catholic was making their 7-0 run.

 

Catholic scores a basket

 

Station kid runs out of bounds at the baseline to await the ball to bring it in

 

A Catholic kid picks up the ball, and throws it at the Station kid standing out of bounds at the baseline

 

Ball hits the Station kid in the face and bounces back on the court

 

Catholic picks it up and scores a basket

 

Refs let the basket count

 

Was that legal by KHSAA rules?

 

 

Looks like if this were legal, it would be a pretty good strategy. I do not think Catholic did it intentionally. They were just trying to help the refs out by picking up the loose ball after their shot, and throwing it to Bryan Station.

whistle should have been blown, no basket. The official may not have seen this happen, it does happen.

I thought that might be the case. I have even seen the refs throw the ball to the player, and he drops it or it comes back out on the court. Usually, they go get it or blow the whistle and get the ball back.

Sounds like to me that there should have been a "delay of game warning" on Catholic for touching the ball after a made basket and no basket.

Ref had to be out of postion to not have seen the play. But refinstripes is right, the whistle should have been blown and maybe warn catholic not to throw the ball to the other player.

Ref should have blown the play dead and gave the ball back to station to put back into play. However, I'm not sure about the warning. If they ball goes through the basket and the offensive players knocks it away from the team trying to inbound the ball, then you have a warning. Sounds like to me the offensive player was just trying to help out. But, the basket should not have counted and the ball should have been given back to Station:thumb:.

What is the rule on 6 players on the court? I was at a Girls game last week and Harlan started the fourth quarter with 6 players, three seconds ran off the clock then the refs blew the whistle and let one of the players off and resumed play the coaches and fans went nuts.

Correct. For some reason, some refs will stop and treat it as a "my bad" when it should automatically be called a T.

Well, it is their bad, as an official, count your players after any interruption or sub into the game. If this occurs as in this situation, it is a T by rule. However, some officials may just recognize this as a short period of time and there was NO advantage of having 6 on the court, I don't blame them for treating it like this.

 

Now, if the team had scored a basket or played a period of time, then a T is warranted. This does happen a lot and think about how you would feel if you were on the receiving end of a T for a similar situation?

So I'm the opposing team's coach. How do you justify your ruling if you don't call a T ?

What is the rule, though? A technical foul is the resulting penalty. Time had ran off the clock! Officials aren't supposed to consider how a team will feel about a penalty - issue the correct penalty for the violation. I have seen many officials call this...correctly. Yes, I have been at the receiving end. We went on with the game.

 

I am usually very pro-officials. I have a lot of respect for the hard work that they put into the game and how very little appreciation they get. However, we can't pick and choose which violations we are going to call and which ones we aren't. The rules are there for a reason.
