Counts played a half of a game for the JV team last year. Cov Cath's JV team was the only team to beat the Holmes JV squad last year.

He played with Shining Star Sports-Romes. He had a very good summer. Shina is a special player in the open court. Needs to continue to improve his perimeter shooting to become a complete player. Great kid with a special game.

Boone finished 21-8 last year because of the light schedule. They only finished 8-6 in the region. 13-2 out of the region. In three years this team is a total of 2 games over .500 in the region. Other than beating Covington Catholic last year (Cov Cath missing two guards and dealing with the tragic death of Sorrell) they have not had any big wins. While the top teams in the region are playing good teams that will prepare them for the post season Boone is playing Walton Verona, Owen County, Davies County, Beechwood, Christian Academy, Western and Indian Hill. They play in some of the weaker holiday tournaments every year. This team is not setup to peak at the end of the season.

I am not telling you that they were as talented as Rice, Hill, Jefferson but they have been talented enough to win at least one district tournament game. In a district that has been very light over the last couple of years. There are a number of college coaches that would disagree about the talent level that Boone County has. McFarland has already committed and Gabbard, Popp and Earls will have opportunities to play at the next level. It is the coaches job to get the most out of his players and put them in a position to win. That is not happening at Boone.

Go back and look at the schedule that they have played the last three years. They load up with sub par teams in December and early January. Their schedule has always been very light. They play in very bad holiday tournaments. They always begin the season with a good number of wins. Fact: 2005-06 Boone lost 7 of their last 10 games in February. First round exit. 2006-07 Boone lost 7 of their last 10 games in February. First round exit. 2007-08 Boone lost 4 of their last 5 games in February. First round exit.

Nobody said that they would purposely use a kid in the wrong way. I don't think for a second that the staff would want to hurt these kids. What I am telling you is that they don't understand how to use these kids. The head coach has NO idea how to motivate kids, the head coach has NO idea how to lead a team. Just because the head coach played college basketball doesn't make him a good coach or an individual that knows how to teach the game. I think if you look back over his coaching career you will find that he has never won anywhere that he has been. This is year four at Boone!! Someone has to take responsibility for what is happening at Boone and I think it should start at the top!! I think that we all agree that making your kids believe and motivating kids is a big part of coaching today. You have to be able to manage ego's and motivate kids to play hard for you. That is not happening at Boone. You can have the best system in place but if the kids don't believe it doesn't matter!! If we can agree that there are some very good coaches in the ninth region, why can't we agree that there are some very bad coaches in the ninth region?

There is no doubt that Boone County has talent. Mike Gabbard is one of the top point guards in Northern Kentucky. Absolute warrior that gives maximum effort every time he steps on the floor. Issue: Coaching staff has misused him since the day he arrived at Boone. Mikey is a player that needs to have some freedom to make some mistakes because more than not he is going to make something good happen. He has never been allowed to just go out and play. The coaching staff needs to take the leash off and allow him to do what he does best. Ryan Popp is a very talented combo guard that has really improved his ability to score the ball. He had a fantastic summer and proved that he can be a wing scorer. He can also handle the point if asked. Issue: Ryan has dealt with some injuries that have slowed him down a little bit. Hopefully he can stay healthy and have a big year. Ryan is a gym rat and works his butt off. If he can stay healthy for an entire season he should have a great junior year. The coaching staff hasn't shown that they believe in Ryan and he struggles with his confidence at times. Look for a nice year from Ryan. Steven McFarland is on a full ride to Georgetown College. Someone must of thought the kid can play. He is one of the top players in the region. He did struggle from the perimeter and free throw line last year but is working very hard to get his touch back. Issue: Steven has been lucky to develop as much as he has to this point. He has been misused and under coached since arriving at Boone. His role has never been defined and his talents have never been taken advantage of. He plays with a very high level of confidence during the summer months but really struggles with his confidence while playing high school ball because the staff has never believed in him or his ability to be a top player in the region. I would look for him to have a huge year because his college decision is done. He can just relax and play and not have to worry about where he will be playing next year. Andy Earls is a very talented big man. Andy runs like a deer and can step out and stroke the three. I would not consider him to be a back to the basket type of player. He rebounds very well and can score the ball. Issue: The coaching staff has tried to make him a back to the basket player. Not his strength. He needs to be able to face the basket and step out on the floor and shoot the basketball. Andy also at times struggles with his focus. Andy can be as good as he wants if he puts in the time and works on his game. I doubt that the coaching staff will ever put him in a position to be successful. I think that all four of these kids will have college opportunities. Trevan Brown will bring some toughness and the ability to rebound the ball. Trevan is a relentless rebounder and a kid that will lay it on the line for you every time he steps on the floor. He is a bit undersized to play in the post but in the 9th region that will not be much of an issue. Talent has not been a problem for Boone County. This team has been undercoached and unprepared for the last three seasons. The team lacks confidence in their leader and the system that they are put into. The best coaches are able to get their kids to believe in what they are doing and are able to create systems that play to the strengths of their players. Anyone that has watched Boone play the last couple of years can see how unprepared this team is to play in February and March. Until a change is made at the helm this basketball team will not win in February and March.

Dixie depends a lot on Zeke Pike playing freshman ball. I don't think that is going to happen. He will be starting JV and getting some varsity minutes from the start.

I just found out that Kentucky Elite is ran out of Sportsville in Florence Kentucky. They do a decent job of running some local tournaments and allow a lot of younger teams to have somewhere to play. These teams were formed to populate the BCI tournaments in Florence. These teams will not travel to any of the top notch tournaments in this area. BCI tournaments are not going to allow a player to recieve exposure or get him in front of college coaches. If a players wants to be with an elite orginization they need to look at programs such as Derek Smith, Shining Star Sports, etc...

Who in the world is KY Elite? How will they provide exposure?

Simple, without Sorrell they are a very average team.

Loosing Maile doesn't but loosing Bondick, Roll, Shmerge, Noll, Maile and Klein do.

Micah Pugh went over to play at Thomas Moore but injured his foot and is having surgery. Don't know if he will be returning to the team or not.

I would love to see the Scott County stats and see what Richie shot from behind the arc. I watched him play about a dozen times this summer and don't remember him stepping behind the arc and shooting the three. Richie is a very good player but I don't think that I would put him in the catagory of a shooter.

If you think Richie is a better shooter than Dakotah then you haven't watched these guys play. Richie has range to about 12 feet. Dakotah has range to about 30 feet. Dakotah can flat out stroke the ball.

I don't think that there was a 6'7" kid in the Boone County system that was considered a good AAU player. 6'7" kids that can play don't transfer without everyone knowing about it.

I think that Shina is at his best when the game is moving up and down the floor. He is very quick and can really make things happen in space. If this team is not able to play at a quick pace I believe they will really struggle this year.

Where every he decides to go he will be a nice addition. I believe that CJ still has a ton of upside and will continue to grow as a player. The kid plays with such confidence. Good Luck CJ!!
