Can you say overrated? This team continually goes into each season with high expectations and no return. McQueary is the most overrated coach and has yet to prove he can coach in the 33rd let alone the 9th region. I don't see this team falling in districts again, Conner is very down and Cooper is just beginning, but I don't see them as 9th region contenders. McFarland is a good player, but can't shoot. Their center is okay and they lost one of their best players to Scott County. Also, Cooper Downs and the other freshman are just that, freshman. Trevan Brown is undersized to play on the varsity level. Look for Ryle to win the 33rd this year and be in the Region Final against Holmes.

PB, I have been in the NKY area for longer than most people on this board and have watched and coached the Boone County teams for 26+ years. I know a thing or two about this team and I know they are overrated.

I wouldn't exactly say they're overrated. I personally don't think they're as good as some think but they're definetly the second best team in nky this year behind Holmes. Popp and Gabbard are good players as well but anyone who thinks they would have received the same attention and hype they did without playing with Euton and Jackson are sadly mistaken.

 

Boone does have one of the top 5 players in the region though in Mcfarland. I'd say their only downfall is their lack of defense; which has spelled their doom the past few years including last year when they didn't even make it past the first round of districts.

 

They'll lose to other nky schools this year, but I still expect them to be right there come March.

Mike Gabbard is one of the top point guards in Northern Kentucky. Absolute warrior that gives maximum effort every time he steps on the floor.

 

Issue: Coaching staff has misused him since the day he arrived at Boone. Mikey is a player that needs to have some freedom to make some mistakes because more than not he is going to make something good happen. He has never been allowed to just go out and play. The coaching staff needs to take the leash off and allow him to do what he does best.

 

Ryan Popp is a very talented combo guard that has really improved his ability to score the ball. He had a fantastic summer and proved that he can be a wing scorer. He can also handle the point if asked.

 

Issue: Ryan has dealt with some injuries that have slowed him down a little bit. Hopefully he can stay healthy and have a big year. Ryan is a gym rat and works his butt off. If he can stay healthy for an entire season he should have a great junior year. The coaching staff hasn't shown that they believe in Ryan and he struggles with his confidence at times. Look for a nice year from Ryan.

 

Steven McFarland is on a full ride to Georgetown College. Someone must of thought the kid can play. He is one of the top players in the region. He did struggle from the perimeter and free throw line last year but is working very hard to get his touch back.

 

Issue: Steven has been lucky to develop as much as he has to this point. He has been misused and under coached since arriving at Boone. His role has never been defined and his talents have never been taken advantage of. He plays with a very high level of confidence during the summer months but really struggles with his confidence while playing high school ball because the staff has never believed in him or his ability to be a top player in the region. I would look for him to have a huge year because his college decision is done. He can just relax and play and not have to worry about where he will be playing next year.

 

Andy Earls is a very talented big man. Andy runs like a deer and can step out and stroke the three. I would not consider him to be a back to the basket type of player. He rebounds very well and can score the ball.

Andy also at times struggles with his focus. Andy can be as good as he wants if he puts in the time and works on his game. The team lacks confidence in their leader and the system that they are put into. The best coaches are able to get their kids to believe in what they are doing and are able to create systems that play to the strengths of their players. Until a change is made at the helm this basketball team will not win in February and March.

I'm curious where you would rank Boone and who you think is better? Ryle? Until Ryle proves they can beat Boone, they are just as much overrated.

 

Boone still has to prove themselves also. Their young players are maturing and are much more talented than recent junior and senior classes they had in the last few years.

 

Boone has to prove they can beat teams like Highlands and Holmes and not get upset in the district when it counts. 21-7 last year is pretty good for a team that started 3 sophomores.

Earls, Gabbard, and Popp have earned any attention/hype on their own through their own accomplishments. All had great summers at some big AAU tournaments against top national competition and have garnered interest of their own through their performances from various college coaches. Gabbard only played less than a year with Euton and Jackson. Popp and Gabbard have received most of their attention in the last 2 years while playing with the Shining Stars than when they played with Euton and Jackson.

 

I believe all three of these boys will have the opportunity to play college ball somewhere on scholarship if they desire.

 

Boone will need to play better TEAM defense to succeed. They have some good defenders but a weak link here or there in the past years that has hurt them in certain individual matchups at critical times in close games.

Agree that both of Boone's guards need more freedom to create. Sometimes that comes with mistakes, but also can lead to a lot of good plays. Both of Boone's guards seem to work best in open space in the middle of the floor.

 

If Boone's coaches keep an open mind and are willing to try new things, make changes with this group, I think they can succeed.

I hope the players buy in to the coaches methods and decisions better than the fans at Boone. This whole post gives an attitude that is detrimental to a team. :irked:

Boone isn't as good as a lot of you think which is why they haven't went anywhere in the post season recently. The coaches can only do so much. (See Holmes during the Hill, Jefferson, Rice era...Does that make Henley a bad coach who had WAY more talent than this year's Boone team!?!? And please don't try to avoid the question). It's up to the PLAYERS to go out and execute the gameplan that the coaches come up with from scouting and seeing the teams personally.

 

I doubt very seriously a coach would purposely use a kid other than what their strengths are. It's a TEAM game and the coaches use their players the best way that will help the TEAM. Seriously all the bickering and crying about the coaching staff really gets old. Maybe it's time to realize that they just aren't as good as a lot of the Boone faithful think. Nobody said that they would purposely use a kid in the wrong way. I don't think for a second that the staff would want to hurt these kids. What I am telling you is that they don't understand how to use these kids. The head coach has NO idea how to motivate kids, the head coach has NO idea how to lead a team.

 

Just because the head coach played college basketball doesn't make him a good coach or an individual that knows how to teach the game.

 

I think if you look back over his coaching career you will find that he has never won anywhere that he has been. This is year four at Boone!! Someone has to take responsibility for what is happening at Boone and I think it should start at the top!!

 

I think that we all agree that making your kids believe and motivating kids is a big part of coaching today. You have to be able to manage ego's and motivate kids to play hard for you. That is not happening at Boone.

 

You can have the best system in place but if the kids don't believe it doesn't matter!!

If I am not mistaken the Hill, Jefferson, Rice era went to the state tournament. That is despite a lot of off court troubles and attitude adjustments. I think that Henley figured out a way to bring this group together and achieve some very good things.

 

Boone doesn't have that type of talent. The fans at Boone aren't asking for a state championship they would be very happy to see a regional tournament game instead of the one and done in the district.
