Boone Co 2008/2009

Nobody said that they would purposely use a kid in the wrong way. I don't think for a second that the staff would want to hurt these kids. What I am telling you is that they don't understand how to use these kids. The head coach has NO idea how to motivate kids, the head coach has NO idea how to lead a team.

Just because the head coach played college basketball doesn't make him a good coach or an individual that knows how to teach the game.

I think if you look back over his coaching career you will find that he has never won anywhere that he has been. This is year four at Boone!! Someone has to take responsibility for what is happening at Boone and I think it should start at the top!!

I think that we all agree that making your kids believe and motivating kids is a big part of coaching today. You have to be able to manage ego's and motivate kids to play hard for you. That is not happening at Boone.

You can have the best system in place but if the kids don't believe it doesn't matter!!

If we can agree that there are some very good coaches in the ninth region, why can't we agree that there are some very bad coaches in the ninth region?

So the coach has no idea how to motivate or lead the team but yet they won 21 games last year and had the second best record in nky? Just becaue they didn't have post season success doesn't mean the season was a wash and the coach is bad.

Again, I refer back to the question: see Holmes during the Jefferson, Hill, Rice era when NOBODY could check the ego's. Does that make Henley a bad coach since they didn't make it past the first round of region the 05/06 year? Coaches can only do so much my friend. It's up to the players to execute what the coaches tell them.

We certainly can agree that there are good and bad coaches in nky. I just don't think Boone's coach is as bad as some of the Boone faithful make him out to be. If he were that bad and the administration saw the same thing the FANS (people who have no idea what goes on in practice and behind the scenes) saw, he would have been fired a long time ago. It seems every year it's the coaches, not players, who get blamed when Boone loses a game. The coaches aren't the ones who shoot the ball and defend last time I checked.

If I am not mistaken the Hill, Jefferson, Rice era went to the state tournament. That is despite a lot of off court troubles and attitude adjustments. I think that Henley figured out a way to bring this group together and achieve some very good things.

Boone doesn't have that type of talent. The fans at Boone aren't asking for a state championship they would be very happy to see a regional tournament game instead of the one and done in the district.

Their junior year they didn't make it past the first round of the region tournament. Henley didn't truly bring that group together until their senior year.

Same could happen with Boone. You guys need to realize the majority of the Boone players last year were just SOPHOMORES. They are going to make mistakes and probably lose a few games they shouldn't. (first round of districts.) You can't put all the blame on the coach is what I'm trying to get across. He led a group of sophomores to a 21-8 record. I'd say that's pretty darn good.

As far as your last paragraph...BINGO! Maybe Boone just doesn't have the talent that a lot think. Sure they're a good team but not good enough to just roll over everyone night in and night out. They have a lot more weaknesses that can be exploited by veteran teams.

Go back and look at the schedule that they have played the last three years. They load up with sub par teams in December and early January. Their schedule has always been very light. They play in very bad holiday tournaments. They always begin the season with a good number of wins.

Fact:

2005-06 Boone lost 7 of their last 10 games in February. First round exit.

2006-07 Boone lost 7 of their last 10 games in February. First round exit.

2007-08 Boone lost 4 of their last 5 games in February. First round exit.

Their junior year they didn't make it past the first round of the region tournament. Henley didn't truly bring that group together until their senior year.

I am not telling you that they were as talented as Rice, Hill, Jefferson but they have been talented enough to win at least one district tournament game. In a district that has been very light over the last couple of years.

There are a number of college coaches that would disagree about the talent level that Boone County has. McFarland has already committed and Gabbard, Popp and Earls will have opportunities to play at the next level.

It is the coaches job to get the most out of his players and put them in a position to win. That is not happening at Boone.

Boone finished 21-8 last year because of the light schedule. They only finished 8-6 in the region. 13-2 out of the region. In three years this team is a total of 2 games over .500 in the region. Other than beating Covington Catholic last year (Cov Cath missing two guards and dealing with the tragic death of Sorrell) they have not had any big wins.

While the top teams in the region are playing good teams that will prepare them for the post season Boone is playing Walton Verona, Owen County, Davies County, Beechwood, Christian Academy, Western and Indian Hill.

They play in some of the weaker holiday tournaments every year.

This team is not setup to peak at the end of the season.

I hope the players buy in to the coaches methods and decisions better than the fans at Boone. This whole post gives an attitude that is detrimental to a team. :irked:

I think some of that attitude has come from players and parents from prior years who were frustrated.

I wish the best for Boone's players and coaches. Winning their district would be a nice improvement for them this year, and a little progress might go a long way to make Boone fans feel better about the situation. The Boone players should continue to work hard, remain optimistic, and listen to their coach, and I believe that they have and do. Parents need to not say negative things about the coaches (especially during the season) to their sons.

I think there's a little truth in what everyone is saying. "Insiders" have a different perspective that "outsiders" can't, and vice versa.

There are several talented Boone players who have always excelled in various situations. 1 through 4 might be talented compared to most teams, but 5 through 10 may not.

I do believe that Boone lacks some overall size and will need bangers down low.

Although I have also sometimes questioned coaching strategy in the past, it's easy to be a sideline coach. I don't think you can say its 100% the coach's faults, or that the players "aren't as good as people think." The whole package forms a team. There can be very good players on a team and others who don't buy in, aren't as athletic, or whatever. A team is only as strong as its sum of parts, including all players and the coaches.

So the coach has no idea how to motivate or lead the team but yet they won 21 games last year and had the second best record in nky? Just becaue they didn't have post season success doesn't mean the season was a wash and the coach is bad.

Both players (ALL players) and coaches share the responsibility. I'm not sure I agree that administrations are always qualified to evaluate good coaches.

The talent level of the players and the coaches using them correctly is important. I believe that Boone will come to play every night this season and make it to the regional finals. When they lose in the regional finals the coaches will get blamed for it, but it will be a successful year.

I don't see how coaches could get blamed for losing at that stage unless they make an obvious, bonehead mistake at the end of a game. I'd bet that Boone fans will be happy if Boone at least wins its district this year.

Take a look at Boone's schedule from last year. It was not weak at all. They played and beat Knox Central (Top 3 13 region team), Adair Co (5th region favorite), South Laurel (13 region champs), and Corbin (Region runner up) in the hoopin it up holiday classic which is an above average tournament. They also played and beat Indian Hill, OH who is consistently a top team for their division in Ohio and they played and beat Rose Hill who were led by two of the top sophomores in the state, in Euton and Jackson. All this on top of a tough 9th region that included CCH, Highlands, and Holmes. Boone's schedule more than prepared them for February and March.

I'm not interested in jumping into the fray going on, but the bolded statement is pretty far off base. Indian Hill is almost never a top team in their division in Ohio, and seldom even a top team in their local conference.

Boone has Ballard (Hoopfest), Covington Catholic, and Holmes (all top 20 teams from last year) on its schedule this season, in addition to playing in the typically strong 5th Third, playing Highlands, and playing in a Western Hills tournament in which they could potentially meet Eastern, Shelby County, etc.

They defeated Knox Central Corbin, Covington Catholic (top 20 last year), South Laurel, and Adair (top 20 at various times) last year, all pretty good teams. They need to carry that type of play through into the districts.

I was saying Boone's schedule WASN'T weak last year in reply to Mclovin's post that they didn't play a schedule that got them ready for February. I know that Boone played some tough teams last year.

Sounds like they have a solid schedule this year as well. Holmes played in the Western Hills Tournament last year as well and it was a pretty good tournament. That's where Male beat them. Playing in that and the 5/3 should more than prepare Boone against the top 9th region teams.
