I'm happy to take a #2 ranking, but with our top running back/defensive player out for the year, and now our QB/free safety going down with a broken collarbone Friday night, it is taking this beautiful weather to put us at Bardstown in good spirits this morning.

I would be remiss if I did not give some local praise to the vast improvement of the Nelson County Cardinals. As little as two years ago, this team was losing 9-10 games every season. I've mentioned many times their commitment to strength and conditioning and having players wrestle in the off-season. Friday night, they controlled the line of scrimmage in the first half and were actually up 16-14 midway through the second quarter. And it wasn't just line push, there were some good athletes out there. Bardstown took care of business the rest of the way, but a tip of the cap to Coach Philip Stockdale and the Cardinal program for a significaint turnaround and back to relevance.

On Friday night they put in sophomore QB Amonti Marshall and he promptly threw his first varsity TD pass. However, there are some options I understand they are considering, so I don’t really know. As you know at a small school (Bardstown is one of the smaller enrollment 3A schools) there are a lot of two-way players and therefore a lot of shuffling.

There was some discussion about that and he has not had surgery. If he is able to return for the playoffs, it will not be as a running back.

Very much looking forward to this Fall Break game at Roy Kidd Stadium. Bardstown is reeling. Fresh off the heels of losing our best player, RB/OLB T.J. Greenwell, for the season due to a torn ACL, the Tigers Friday night lost QB Brayden Clark to a broken collarbone on his non-throwing shoulder. Clark is a blue-collar storybook success story who is a highly respected quiet leader of his team whom was having an outstanding year, and the postgame Senior Night celebration was among the most somber and even despondent scenes I have seen in my 32 years following this school. While very troubled, I nevertheless know that the Tigers of 2022 are a close-knit, unselfish group of junkyard dogs who rarely get too high or too low. They do not bicker and argue. There are no prima donnas. They are mostly sophomores and juniors. I have no doubt that the staff will find a way to turn their grief to unity this week and rally the troops in time to give the Class A RPI leader a ballgame. But, the reality is stark, this indeed is a good chance for the Bulldogs to gain a tremendous RPI boost with a win against a 3A leader.

The victory ensures what in all likelihood is the Class 3A District 3 championship for the Tigers, and was a victory over a much improved crosstown rival on Senior Night and the last regular season home game for one of the winningest classes of seniors in recent memory.

Perhaps, but they've beaten top-ranked 4A and 3A schools and lost to the #2 ranked 3A school on a last play hail mary. I know what I saw.

1. CAL. Then a long drop to 2. Union County. They've beaten a nice list of opponents, and are physical. Can't imagine what they'd do if their wrestling coach would let all their guys play football. 3. Bardstown. The loss of T.J. Greenwell for the year will weigh upon the Tigers. 4. Belfry. I know some of their losses appear unusual (margin of Lex. Christian game), but can we really drop Belfry below 4, ever? 5. Elizabethtown. The Bardstown loss shouldn't fool anyone. They should run the table until they get to CAL. 6. PT - the word is that the offense struggles, but it did last year, too, so . . . 7. Bell County. I saw this team earlier in the year, they were just smaller than I'm used to seeing from Bell. 8. Glasgow. They dropped 28 on Greenwood, and I've seen Greenwood. Its a rough patch, but they still are a top 10 team. 9. Lawrence County. I don't really know what to think of them or Mason County because they haven't really played much of a schedule, but folks are saying they could play with Belfry so there it is. 10. Casey County. The passing game is legit, and that is something in high school. The next few: 11. Mason County. Don't know why. 12. Trigg County. Probably grouchy they are not in there, go do big things Friday night. 13. Taylor County. With Smith, and assuming the defense comes around at some point. 14. Larue County. This team can play offense. 15. Hart County. What a resurgence! Taylor and Casey games will tell all. 16. East Carter. 2 1/2 TD loss at home to the only difficult opponent. 17. Henry County. Undefeated. Beaten the schedule that has been laid in front of them. Looks like they can score. Margin Friday may slide them up or down.

Also, Lawrence County beats East Carter by 2 1/2 TD's at East Carter and they stay in the rankings at 9-10.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around dropping Glasgow from the rankings following a loss to a really good Greenwood team. I know they have two losses, but I still think they may win that district.

I haven't watched either of these teams but will go with the Purples just because of former Purple QB and long-time Bardstown Head Coach David Clark.

I think this game will be a prime example of the dangers of both scheduling and off-weeks. Bethlehem has not played anybody difficult in a month and was off this last week. Crittenden has been sharpening themselves on some good competitition. Despite the long drive, I'm going to take the Rockets in an upset.
