sounds to me like we have got a lot of parents coaching down there in somerset and that is probably way more of a problem than who their coach was.

They wouldn't beat any of the WNBA teams. Did you watch the final game of maryland vs. duke. It was played at an extremely high level. Lex. Cath girls could beat some boys teams in the state

Call UK Sports medicine and ask for a medical release for a player with a torn ACL. I can't believe anyone would even TRY to take up for the decision to put a 14 to 15 year old child in harms way.

Everyone from Wolfe Co. was proud of Jackson. That did show alot of class for Gilbert and the entire boys basketball team at wolfe county

These two instances were with mildy, partially torn ACL where there was still support. AND they were braced accordingly. I had a friend who tore his ACL and didn't go to the dr. for 2 years. it was totally gone and the dr. told him he was very lucky that he didn't lose his leg while continuing to play softball. Not to mention when you are compensating for an injury you lose your body's natural balance...which, in turn, increases the chance for injury. Malik had a high percentage of hurting her good knee by overcompensating on it during the game. .....especially competing at the highest level of the year with the most stakes.

I don't know the name of the artery. I have had a torn ACL and the dr.'s warned me on how careful I had to be until I had surgery(and even after). They explained to me how the ACL is connected to the top and bottom bones of my leg down through my knee. This connection helps keep the bottom of your leg from moving too far forward and even totally out of place. If it goes too far out of place that is when it can sever the artery that runs through the leg. That is why I found it so shocking that they played her.

We have a rule at our school that a dr. must release an athlete...maybe she had a release..but I can't imagine a dr. taking on that liability.

I am no Dr. but I have had a torn ACL and the doctor warned me that if It gave out in the right way while the ACL was absent, that it could potentially tear an artery that runs down my leg and that I could possibly lose my leg, or die from bleeding if I wasn't close to help. That is what the dr. told me.....if this is true...it is very frightening to take that type of chance. who knows...maybe it isn't true that that is a possibility.

There is no doubt that lecath is one of the best teams of all time. I would question ANY coach, parent, and even dr. that would say that a kid could play without an ACL, given the possibilities of what could happen to that child. This has nothing to do with who this is, but it is everything about What happened. I saw the first game and she logged in some pretty good minutes. It is my understanding from reading this thread she didn't play much the remainder of the tournament because of the fact she reinjured the knee in the 2nd round game.

This story quotes the reason for playing as the KID didn't want to miss her chance to be in the state tournament.....I'm sure that is why she transferred to Catholic in the first place..(but that is another story) It says that friends and family advised her not to play. .....Any KID in sports is going to decide to play...this is where the COACH has to step in....they have had the medical symposiums and they would be the one jeopardizing the kids future.....In this case the possibility of losing the her leg from the knee down.....I'm sorry there is NO JUSTIFICATION possible for lexcath playing this kid. Let me explain medically. The ACL main respoinsiblity is for holding the bottom part of your leg in place and keeps it from moving forward (YOUR SHIN BONE). Without this ligament the leg could move forward too much causing a main artery that runs down through the leg to be severed. If this happens that kid would have LOST THE BOTTOM PART OF HER LEG....THAT IS if they got the bleeding stopped befere she DIED!!!!

I came back from the girls state tourney and found an old newspaper and was shocked at what I was reading. There was an article about Lex Cath playing FRESHMAN Malik stevenson in the state tourney with a fully torn ACL. I was absolutely shocked. I know that lexcath will go to no ends to win.........but I didn't know that they would stoop to this level. A kid with a torn ACL playing would have a risk of having an injury so severe that they could lose the bottom part of their leg. Is everyone as shocked as I am.....I didn't think their was a coach in the state of Ky. that would play an athlete in this shape......Rick Pitino wouldn't even play Derek Anderson after he had surgery and the dr.'s had cleared him to play. Is everyone as shocked as I was or was this just misinformation on this story printed in the lexington herald.

I am from a small school and i know many kids from small schools who are crying out for the KHSAA to class size. Of course the bigger schools don't want to. They get to go to teh state tourney evey year and just being there is great. But what have they done....most of them have beaten schools half their size to get there. AND when you do get a small school there and once in a blue moon (won't happen again) wins the state championship...they are usually a city school from a larger county who pulls the best athletes out of that county. i.e. Paintsville was a small school who won a state championship...but Johnson Central has many many students in the same county who they could pull from. What about the counties who have one small high school with 250 or so students and no other school within 40 miles to pull from....show me one of them who has won a state title.

Which is what Ky. needs. Our educational system (KHSAA included) is about providing opportunities for kids. Our student athletes at our smaller schools aren't given that opportunity. Breathitt co. is a neighboring co. they were 3A and not very good in football for years. They dropped to 2A and have won state championships and have community pride. Tell me class sizing didn't provide them opportunities.....Basketball needs to do the same for its student athletes.

Maybe everybody from a small school who feels we need to class size should quit buying tickets to the state tourney. we could go down and stay in our rooms and socialize. We don't need the games.....You take us out of the tourney and you would more than cut it in half. Hit them in their pocket book

It is going to happen less and less.......The big schools are consolidating and are becoming bigger.......You won't see another small school state champion.....unless they cheat like hell.

If Indiana or west va. for that matter is so dissatisfied then why aren't they chaning back????? The fact of the matter is 49 states class size and Ky. doesn't and it is a shame for all the smaller and mid sized schools in ky. who don't have a chance to compete. If crowning one champion is so great let's do it in football.

Great game last night. Wolfe got down by 14 early but wouldn't quit. Great showing by Wolfe County as the game wasn't decided until .2 seconds left in the game. Looked like Wolfe might pull off the upset, But they had 4 kids foul out....2 early in the 4th quarter but they kept fighting and Letcher Central held on....Have to hand it to LCC, they did what they had to do to .........win. The Lady Wolves showed tremendous heart like they have all season.....Great Season Lady Wolves and good luck LCC.

I have to agree with you, that 87 wolfe team won the Pulaski county tournament that year. That tournament had the 86 state champ (pulaski co.) and the eventual state champ for 87 in the tournament (clay co.). Wolfe won that tournament, which was a much tougher tournament to win than the 14th region was that year.....even though hazard had a heck of a ball club.
