I came back from the girls state tourney and found an old newspaper and was shocked at what I was reading. There was an article about Lex Cath playing FRESHMAN Malik stevenson in the state tourney with a fully torn ACL. I was absolutely shocked. I know that lexcath will go to no ends to win.........but I didn't know that they would stoop to this level. A kid with a torn ACL playing would have a risk of having an injury so severe that they could lose the bottom part of their leg. Is everyone as shocked as I am.....I didn't think their was a coach in the state of Ky. that would play an athlete in this shape......Rick Pitino wouldn't even play Derek Anderson after he had surgery and the dr.'s had cleared him to play. Is everyone as shocked as I was or was this just misinformation on this story printed in the lexington herald.

I blame the parents as much or more than the coach. It seems that many parents anymore are afraid to be a parent and tell their kid no when it's in their best interest.

Heres the link to the story and why she played.

http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/news/14165082.htm

This story quotes the reason for playing as the KID didn't want to miss her chance to be in the state tournament.....I'm sure that is why she transferred to Catholic in the first place..(but that is another story)

It says that friends and family advised her not to play. .....Any KID in sports is going to decide to play...this is where the COACH has to step in....they have had the medical symposiums and they would be the one jeopardizing the kids future.....In this case the possibility of losing the her leg from the knee down.....I'm sorry there is NO JUSTIFICATION possible for lexcath playing this kid. Let me explain medically.

The ACL main respoinsiblity is for holding the bottom part of your leg in place and keeps it from moving forward (YOUR SHIN BONE). Without this ligament the leg could move forward too much causing a main artery that runs down through the leg to be severed. If this happens that kid would have LOST THE BOTTOM PART OF HER LEG....THAT IS if they got the bleeding stopped befere she DIED!!!!

Could you tell me exactly what main artery you are referring to? The ACL is contained inside the knee joint and she was wearing a brace. So im lost with this possible situation.:confused:Since the ACL was already damaged there wasnt any more damage she could have done.

Hines Ward plays football without an ACL.

Not disputing what you say could happen, just saying there are instances out there of competitors playing without the benefit of the ACL. I believe former Buffalo Bills Running Back Thurman Thomas also played with a torn or missing ACL.

You are correct on both accounts!!!

Why don't we just give LexCath the accolades that they deserve rather than continually trying to find fault. They were and are the best team that our state had or has to offer. I'm quite content with the fact that our Rose Hill team finished second because we finished second to the number three team in the country and, far and away, the best team in Kentucky. It is unfortunate that, when a person or a team excels, the "lesser lights" must try to tear them down to the level of the complainers.

For the amount of time that Stevenson played I feel sure she was in no real danger. Had the circumstances presented a serious danger to her, she wouldn't have gotten her chance at her "cameo appearance". She played very little. Actually, her participation was only for her to have the opportunity to be on the floor. LexCath certainly didn't need her in order to win. In fact, she did not get into the championship game at all.

Those who expend energy finding fault with the Lady Knights would be better served using that energy to work a little harder so that they can someday compete with our state champions. If our girls had to lose, I am pleased that it was to a team of LexCath's caliber and not to a "lesser light".

As I understand it, playing with a partially torn ACL is more dangerous than playing with a fully torn ACL. The possibility always exists to do more damage to the cartlidges tho.

I obviously do not know of the true intent of Snappy starting this thread, however, my comments would be the same regardless of the team involved. And I believe it was LC's second tournament game in which the young lady "re-injured" or aggravated her knee injury. She had to be helped from the floor and never re-entered the rest of the tournament. Again, parents step up. I know in my coaching days I would always relent to the desires of the parent if they did not want their child to play. Even if, in my experience and knowledge, I did not believe it would harm the child.

The parents probably should have "stepped up" to the plate, but none of us know all of the facts. Mybe the parents and coaches consulted a doctor or trainer and got the "ok" as long as the young lady felt fine and the leg was wrapped correctly, I don't know. But I am not going to blame a coach or the whole school for what was, in essence, a decision made by the parents and athlete.

I let my son wrestle with a partially torn ACL and a knee brace. It was either that or use a baseball bat on him. I took the less harmful choice.

Rule #6. No putting incorrect or false information on the site. Let's at least attempt to get our "facts" straight before we post.

By all newspaper accounts (and we know how accurate they can be), the parents were against the young lady playing. HHS Dad, I can appreciate your son's passion for competition, but I would imagine that you came to your agreement with the consultation of his doctor. If Ms. Stevenson was a senior, I may not feel as strongly, but to endanger the future health of a 15-year-old? I just cannot agree with it. I see the decision-making abilities of that age group on a daily basis. They are living in the moment. They are not considering anything about next month, let alone years ahead.
