All Play No Work

Tough coaching situation with the twin 1000 pound gorillas sitting in the Park Hills and Fort Thomas corners. Add to that the 500 gorilla sitting behind the KFC on Dixie Highway and who would you hire that would not be using this job to get to another job? Don't mean to be harsh, and quite frankly it is just a stroke of bad fortune (or bad decision-making) or bad geography or bad karma, that allowed Highlands and CovCath into the same district as Scott therefore making it a very tough position to fill.

I think the point was there are other SRs and JRs that have been back-ups and playing in sub-time and in this case a Fr. was used late in the game. Bottom-line is that next year there will be about 23 Seniors, about 9 Juniors of which 8 are linemen, and about 23 Sophs who were very talented as Frosh this year. Some of those 23 Sophs are going to have to make major contributions next year for NCC to continue to have success.

I would guess that Corbin requested it in order to be home by around midnight. And with no school Friday, leaving for the game earlier while there is still daylight is a good thing too.

They have stuck with the same players. What NKU20 was referring to was at the end of the Newport playoff game with the subs playing and the final TD was scored by a Frosh. After the Frosh season is over a few are asked to practice and dress for playoff games. That has been the case for quite a few years now. Anyway the 28-0 playoff game was just about the same as the 14-0 regular season game except both teams turned it over a lot more. So not sure that you can garner any information from that one.

It appears this will be a Corbin size versus Newcath speed match-up on both sides of the ball. When Corbin has the ball they will need the big O-line to grind out yardage on first and second down and stay out of passing situations. NCC's defensive line isn't small (245, 215, 215, 175) but quickness is their strength and the linebackers have size and speed too. Plus if Corbin does pass then NewCath must find a way to pressure the QB. When NewCath has the ball the spread offense needs to get ball carriers and receivers into open spaces and use the no huddle to keep Corbin off balance. If Corbin's defense can get a few quick stops and turn the ball back over to a controlling offense, they can shorten the game and win. If they give up quick scores they could lose. How's Corbin's special teams? Still think that is going to be a major part of this game.

23 will play on offense as a motion receiver and some at DB/LB. 59 and 77 primarily play DT but can also see duty on the offensive line. 75 and 82 are pretty much all defense. 76 plays both ways. The QB is actually the long-snapper for punts and is one of the best downfield cover players.

NCC only has one player that plays the majority of plays both ways and that is OT/DE Geisler. Part of the advantage that NCC has had since 2000 over other small schools is that their QB and primary RB only play offense. That is the same again this year along with the center, the wide receivers, and most of the linemen. A couple of players can see some action on both sides of the ball but it is limited. For example, linebackers can also see time at fullback but that may only be 4 or 5 plays a game. Most eveyone in the secondary could play offense if needed, but they primarily play defense only. That also helps the special teams too since many starters also play on special teams since they only play one way. That depth is really helpful when preparing in practice for a team as good as Corbin.

I've got both Woody Hayes and Jesus on this headset and they both say my running back broke the plane and it was a touchdown!!!

It could start at 7 if both teams agree to it. I believe that last year with no school to worry about, some of the games the day after Turkey day started at 7 so that the visiting team could get home by midnight. Makes sense if you think about it. If the game starts at 7 and ends at 9:30 even with a 2-3 hour drive you get home at around midnight.

They have some key players coming back but behind the starters there is no depth. Likely that 3 Frosh will dress Varsity mostly out of necessity. They seem to be like a lot of programs in that only a few steller players from each class continue on.

Couple of keys in this game: 1. NewCath will have to stop the Corbin run game and force them into unfamiliar passing down and distance. Lots easier to pass and run on 2nd and 3 than it is 2nd and 9. 2. Corbin will have to hang with the speed of NewCath on the edges and not allow any long runs after catches. 3. NewCath special teams have been stellar all year and that will have to continue that to beat a good team like Corbin. 4. I'm not sure how many people go both ways for Corbin but NewCath has very few that play both and they do not play every play. NewCath will have about 30-35 players see significant time and that has been a big reason they could beat 5A and 6A schools, and only helps against other 2A schools.

Let me sum it up for you. LCC on the road is in deep. Still, thats why they play them.

Technically the closest Class A game for Beechwood this year only winning by 33 points. Congrats to the yellow and black Tigers for getting this far. Got a feeling these 2 teams might meet again next year in the District Finals.

Would you like him to come out of the closet for this game? Good experience for the LCC group to head to the North and take on the Bluebirds. Why not get that experience if that is where you want to get your program to?

Lots of Moeller faithful have been looking for this annoucement for the last 3 or 4 years. But that comes with the territory and with the success Elder and St.X have had. As always with a GCL school, the search for a new coach will be entertaining to say the least.

I can't find fault with running the ball because between the interceptions and dropped passes its not like the passing game was clicking. Not that the running game was much better with fumbles and not getting a lot of yards. Basically NCC's kicking game was the best thing on the field, so why not punt and play defense since HC's offense was not moving the ball either. Just about every year teams have to win an U-G-L-Y one somewhere in the playoffs.

U-G-L-Y these offenses got no alibi .....they ugly, hey-hey they ugly. Or maybe it was good defense? Anyone got a calculator so we can total up the turnovers in this one? I know I need more than 10 fingers to count them all. 7-0 for the longest time via an interception return by NewCath. Finally 14-0 after a HC turnover gave NCC another short field and NCC decided to just run the ball. Defense scored 14, offense scored 14 thanks to getting the ball from the defense. Holy Cross moved the ball at times and then turned it over. NCC moved the ball at times and turned it over deep in HC territory a couple of times. HC punting was not good. NCC kick coverage was great. Considering the field position NCC had all night kudos to the Holy Cross defense.

I'm guessing here but remember the KHSAA has designated which weeks that district games must be played. Boone Co had Sept 21 as an Open date this year. That was a district week and might be when the Cooper game will be next year. The following week (9/29) was the Owensboro game which will likely be the new Open week.
