Henry Clay's Kirk Chiles Retires
strongopenyon replied to Philip Hay's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
I heard there have been over 100 inquiries or applicants. I have not heard as to when it will be announced. The coach will be required to teach five hours per day which will eliminate some potential candidates. It is a Fayette County job so the pay will not be the best. Tremendous potential to win big right away. Toughest basketball district in the state! -
If Mike Whitaker said or even inferred that, he is blowing smoke. Tim Couch was a 6'5" 200 lb. phenom in high school. Keith Tandy is 5'11" with heels on and couldn't hold a candle to Couch, in my opinion. From what I have seen and know, Kaelin Ammons might be the best high school quarterback in the state. He will be hard pressed to be a Division I quarterback, but is very effective in high school.

Aaron Dunaway signs with Union College
strongopenyon replied to nWo's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
Felt comfortable with the coaching staff, the proximity to home, and his teammates. Good luck to Aaron. -
Why can't we all say there are at least two excellent stadiums in which the state football championships can be played. Each facility has its positives and maybe a few negatives, but both Papa John Stadium and Commonwealth Stadium are both very nice facilities both worth of hosting a championship. The issue at hand is that there is a scheduling conflict at Papa Johns this year and Commonwealth Stadium could serve as a nice backup. I selfishly would love to see at least some of the championship games be at Commonwealth because of its proximity (to my house) and all the positives it would do for UK.

Who is going to be South Laurel's QB this year?
strongopenyon replied to WILDMAN's topic in KY Football (High School)
I don't disagree with what you are saying, but I am going to point out another situation. There have been cases where a student/athlete's parents have moved to give that player his best shot at receiving an athletic scholarship. In some cases, the family could not afford college if their son does not receive a scholarship. What is a college scholarship to say, Vanderbilt worth. If the player is redshirted and stays five years, that scholarship is worth over $200,000. Economics. Not a bad priority, huh? -
Jonathan Alder High School is in Plain City, Ohio not far from Dublin, Ohio which is where they play The Memorial PGA event at Muirfield Golf Course. A little northeast from Columbus.

Fifth Third or Sweet Sixteen

Some excellent points, "Shue"! -
Fifth Third or Sweet Sixteen
strongopenyon replied to Mustang's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
You totally mistook my point! A consolation bracket is a loser's bracket. The state tournament from start to finish is asudden death competition. One team left standing on a Saturday night in Lexington. There is no tournament that even compares although I do love watching a good Christmas tournament. -
Just under 6'3" in shoes is probably 6'1" in my old fashion way of measuring height so we are probably in agreement as to how tall he is.

Don't get me wrong.....I love the kid. I was talking to a former teammate of Aaron's the other day and I told him I feel he is one of the most unique players I have seen play high school ball in Kentucky. He does so many things well. But he is not getting a lot of interest at the Division I level. Why? I think he might be caught in the Chris Lofton mode in that college coaches are questioning his speed, quickness, and height as to how he will project on the next level. You would think that a good player from the state of Kentucky who started varsity ball for five years, scored over 2000 career points, played in arguably the toughest region in the state, played for winning programs would have numerous interest from Division I schools. But he is not getting that kind of interest. Maybe you have an opinion as to why not?

I am asking for some help here. How many Kentucky high school seniors (boys) will get Division I scholarships this year? Am I correct in saying six? Daniel Ard Murray State Forrest Smallwood Butler A.J. Slaughter Western Kentucky Dan Penick Wright State A'Darius Pegues Western Kentucky Jay Ivey Middle Tennessee I did not count Albert Jackson because he will not graduate from a KY HS. How many Division I football players from Kentucky in the 2006 class? My guess is somewhere around 30 (I am counting Division I-A ala Western KY). What were these figures like 25 years ago? I feel like there is a trend here......basketball is slipping and football is growing and thriving based on the numbers.

Congratulations to Augusta's Levi Gallagher
strongopenyon replied to Devilman's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
First of all, I must admit I do not know who Levi Gallagher is. I glazed quickly through these threads and figured "Augusta's Levi Gallagher" was about some unknown golfer playing at the Masters. I wondered what he shot. My bad! Congratulations to Levi Gallagher the basketball player. -
Fifth Third or Sweet Sixteen
strongopenyon replied to Mustang's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
The Fifth Third Classic has a consolation bracket. No such in the Sweet Sixteen tournament. Is there any doubt to the correct answer to this question? -
I haven't measured him my old fashioned way. I have looked him in the eye while he was in his basketball shoes and that serves as a good gauge for me. Hey, I wish Aaron was 6'4" as he is listed in Rivals.com, but he isn't............not even close. That could make a difference in his recruitment.

I do not know how they measure the height of players today, but here is the old way we did it to assure a level playing field. Back against the wall, stocking or barefooted, heels on the ground touching each other, toes in the air, straight-edge to the wall. It is a very fair way to do it and most people do not like the results because they have inflated their height by two inches. This way yields consistant, fair results. The truth hurts. Aaron Dunaway is 6'1".......by my rules, but still a great high school player!
-
I am told that Aaron is not getting Division I offers. Kyle Macy was taking a close look at him, and maybe the new coach at Morehead State will pursue Aaron. He is probably a legit 6'1" and lacking the athleticism that many of the Division I schools are looking for. I feel he will have a difficult time defending on the next level. A tremendous high school player who the whole state of Kentucky enjoyed watching play. I feel he would be "HAPPY" at Georgetown College.

I see lots of inaccurate information on these players listed.

Winningest Teams in Kentucky since 2000!
strongopenyon replied to 3wishes's topic in KY Football (High School)
Chuck Smith did, arguably, the finest selling and coaching job during his tenure at Boyle County HS, in the history of Kentucky high school football. I saw them play pre-Chuck Smith and to see that is to agree with my previous statement.
