There are many high schools that operate this way, with only high school age players. Check out Maryland for an example. Good Counsel and Dematha are national powers in football. They do not compete for a state championship. The state association keeps a list of non-member schools that agree to comply with the "Standards of Competition". Member schools may play any school on the list. Both Good Counsel and Dematha are on that list. This means they can play any in-state member schools. They also both play out of state games regulary. If you're curious, here's the list of the 94 approved non-member schools: MPSSAA.org If Trinity were interested (and based on the posts above, they may not be) they would have to request some rule changes by KHSAA, but it could certainly be done.

How about we swap teams based on MERIT instead of number of boys? The 5 teams in each class with the worst record over the previous two years move down and the 5 with the best records move up. That would be a much better way to create competitive classes in my opinion.

I was near the Seneca sideline. The coaches called for a squib kick. Kicker did not execute. The kicker made a mistake, but several players had a chance to make a tackle or push the returner out of bounds. A loss is never on just one kid.

Tyler Owen throws a TD pass to Dee Doss with 1:22 remaining to take a 3 point lead. Seneca answers with a TD run by the QB, Lincoln Dover. Seneca up 4. Seneca kicks off with :08 left. Doss gets the kick, pretends to have trouble fielding the ball, then pitches to Dontez Byrd. Byrd, who had been out with cramps, runs down the Seneca sideline for the game winning TD with no time left on the clock.

As these games were being planned, St. X made an independent agreement to play Riverdale. The thinking was if the games at Papa John's did not happen, St. X and Riverdale would still play. At that time, Ballard was scheduled to play Neace High School (Fl.). St. X was asked if they would play Neace and they refused. Under Florida rules, Neace could not play out of state this year because of their team GPA. As it turns out, Byrnes lost an opponent from Florida for the same reason. As a result, Byrnes agreed to come to KY. St. X was asked to play Byrnes and they refused.

The "if caught" part is the real trick. I can't imagine how anyone could find proof for the KHSAA. Records related to tuition payments are not released.

There is a difference between saying something is an advantage and saying it is Trinity's fault. The quality of instruction at Trinity is an advantage over many schools. One part of that quality of education is that every student/family at Trinity cares about their education. That's not true at schools with a resides area. It's much easier to get rid of a problem student (from the school, not just football) at Trinity. None of those things are problems with Trinity, just advantages for Trinity. The fact that Trinity has someone like Stats, and many others that donate their time in other ways, is an advantage for Trinity. Nothing wrong with Stats or Trinity, but still an advantage to have that kind of alumni support. Facilities, number of boys, participation rates, number and quality of coaches, etc. are all advantages. That's not Trinity bashing. It's recognizing the current situation.

Since number of students and financial resources don't matter in football, why have classes?

The numbers on khsaa do not include the last game. Parker ended the season with 1793 yards on 68 catches (26.4 yards per catch, 149.4 yards per game). I wish we kept state records for yards per catch or yards per game, but I we don't. Based on a quick review of the total receiving yards records, it seems like both would be records.

I saw several of Seneca's games this year. I agree that Smith is a great talent, but he is not the only reason for their success this year. They were 5-6 with Smith. Last year, they were 4-7 without him. They have a D-1 receiver in Fluellan. Bender, Lott, Garth, etc. are all good athletes. One of their o-line guys in getting D-1 attention. They were not a one man show.

We're fortunate to have several great candidates for the award this year. Even better, they all appear to be great kids. I know Demarcus Smith personally and he's an outstanding young man. From all accounts Lamar Dawson is as well. I've watched Devonte Parker closely the last couple years and he is a great young man. I admit to being biased, but I think the award should go to Devonte Parker. He had one of the best seasons for a wide reciever in the history of Kentucky High School football. 1793 yards in a season ranks him 4th all time and he only played 12 games. Parker averaged 149.4 yards per game, which is more than the three guys ahead of him for receiving yards [Jordan Burk (141.8 yards per game), John Cole (135.4 yards per game), and Jamarielle Brown (134.7 yards per game)]. Parker averaged an incredible 26.4 yards per catch, breaking the school record by about 6 yards per catch. Ballard high school keeps 12 school records for receiving, Devonte Parket now holds 9 of them. The only ones he does not hold are for number of catches in a game, season, and carear. Parker did all this playing against the BEST competition the state of Kentucky has to offer (Trinity, St. X twice, Male, Central, Western, etc.) Parker was pulled from games early when the outcome was decided. He had no second half catches against PRP or Meade and none after the first quarter against Madison Central. I'm not sure how much it matters to voters, but much is made on message boards about which schools have offered a particular player. A few players in the state have some impressive offers. Each of those players has participated in combines, gone to college camps, made college visits etc. There's nothing wrong with any of that. Parker has not done that stuff. He has not been timed in the 40 since he ran a 4.49 as a soph on a laser timer. Rivals still lists Parker at 6'2". He's 6'4" now. Parker has known all along that he wanted to stay close to home. He made the tough decision between U of L and UK early. At that point, he stopped playing the recruiting game. Quite frankly, I don't think he wanted the all the attention that comes with recruiting. He's just a humble kid who is happy with his choice to stay near his family. I certainly hope that doesn't hurt him with voters. If it were me, I'd wallpaper my room with offers from the best football program in the country, but that's not Devonte.
