Corey Williams was a man amongst children. We(Buckhorn) played them in a summer game back in the late 80s. During a FT, a friend of mine was standing with Corey at half court for a 2 shot foul. Williams looks straight at my friend and says that if his teammate misses the second FT, he is going to slam the miss. At this point, we didn't know a great deal about Williams other than the hype. Needless to say, the kid missed the 2nd FT and Corey Williams followed it up with a 2 hand slam. He was the real deal, at least, from a talent standpoint.

We will see the answer to your last question, when he hires his assistant coaches.

That is a good hire for them. Martin is a quality person and a quality coach. Is Justin Amburgey from KCC going with him as an assistant?

Being that this is one of the most reliable and factual message boards, I was curious to know if there is any truth to what is on another board about Johnny Martin being hired at Pike Central. If anyone has any factual information on this, please let me know. Thanks.

I don't see anything wrong with it being at Powell. I know the distance is a little much for some, but I would imagine that the distance to anywhere else for Powell Co. would be the same. I don't think they should be punished for their location. They are a part of the 14th and they have the facilities. Personally, I would think that Powell, Perry, Knott and, possibly, Letcher are the only ones with adequate facilities. Breathitt has a nice gym, but the parking isn't much better than Riverside Christian's. Hazard has a historically, significant gym, but it needs several upgrades particularly in the locker room area and it's parking is, actually, worse than Breathitt's.

I would say that there are 5 standout freshman in the 14th: BJ Combs - Hazard, Zach Davis - KCC, Logan Johnson - LCC, Hobart Asher - Leslie Co. and Matt Day - Buckhorn

I really don't get these ratings. For instance, in the 54th district, Buckhorn is rated a 60.6. 2 weeks ago,they were rated 61.0. They, then won 3 games the next week including a road win over a team that was rated higher by Cantrell. When the next ratings came out, they went up to only 61.1. This week, Buckhorn wins all 3 games by double figures and drops to 60.6. Anyone have any ideas?

Also, Buckhorn had 4 guys foul out late in the game and had a couple of their freshmen in foul trouble, throughout. I definitely thought there were alot of fouls called and most were good calls, as far as I could tell. Both teams were a little sloppy offensively.

Final was 66-60. Good ball game. I thought Pelfrey was definitely the difference, though.

Tomorrow night at the SportsPlex in Knott Co. vs. Prestonsburg and on Friday at Rupp Arena against Bardstown Bethlehem at 11 a.m.

Buckhorn Center Zach Gay will sign with Coach John Mills and Berea College on Wednesday of next week. Congratulations to Zach on an outstanding career at Buckhorn High School.

Actually, the knee is fine. His doctor cleared him a couple of weeks ago. He only played about 4-5 minutes against Owsley due to some back pain.

It was an 8 or 9 point game most of the way. Jackson played very well. Brumback was a man among boys in there last night.

Buckhorn will , also, have to face Covington Holmes in the Derby City Classic at CAL in early December.

Hood is the only player in his class in the state that is ranked nationally. I'm not sure of his ranking, but I'm pretty sure it is in the top 50.

I don't know about any state powers, but here is some of Buckhorn's schedule, which appears to be loaded with alot of the top mountain teams. Buckhorn has only the following home games: Lee Co., Cordia, Estill, Leslie, North Laurel, Owsley Co and Hazard Some of their remaining road games are: at JBS, Jackson Co., Corbin, Perry Central, Breathitt Co., Leslie, Wolfe Co. and a round robin tournament at Clay County They, also, face South Laurel, East Ridge and Cumberland in various classics throughout the season as well as participating in the Derby City Classic in Louisville and the Walton Sun Blowout in Freeport, Fl.

Coach Miller went home today and ,despite some soreness, is feeling well.

I'll admit that $5 is very steep for a baseball game, but so is $185 for umpires ( if you play varsity and jv )and $1 per mile when a team has to take a bus to a road game. I won't even get started on gas. Baseball and softball teams at small schools are really being hit hard right now and it is no surprise that admission charges are starting to reflect that in some places.

My understanding is that it isn't a matter of whether or not Perry will rehire Coach Holland, but a matter of whether or not Coach Holland wants to stay at Perry.

I don't know if this was posted earlier or not, but Buckhorn's Justin Rice signed with Berea College last week. "Jake" is solid shortstop and pitcher for our young Wildcat team.

Eddie Browning at Buckhorn a couple of year's back was a very good pitching instructor. He assisted at Alice Lloyd for a few years following that and I think is currently a Principal in Perry County and I had heard was an associate scout for the Colorado Rockies.

I think that if Coach Campbell wants it, he deserves the shot. If anyone know the ins and outs of that job, it is the man that has been Coach Holland's right hand for several years now. He has been a loyal employee and is very well liked by both the administration, the players and the general public. The PCC job is one of the most high pressure coaching situations in the mountains and will be a rough one for anyone that is trying to fill Coach Holland's shoes ( which is not 100% that he is leaving BTW ). I feel Coach Campbell has proven himself and if he feels up to it, he should be given the chance to either succeed or fail.

You heard wrong. Coach Holland had not been fired and as for the District game with Perry: PCC starting 5 was: Stacy, Bailey, Kelley, J. Amis and Dmitri Travis which is the same line-up they started toward the end of the season when they started playing their best ball. The other player that you are speaking of did play, but very little and alot of his minutes came when the game was pretty much already decided.

They could apply for it, but the job would still go to Holland. He has been at the top of Hazard's wish list for quite some time and is without question, the premier coach in the mountains and one of the tops in the state. Give him the talent that some of these other guys have on their teams and I guarantee his results would be just as good as theirs, if not better.

I'd have to say no. I do think Clark is much better than what alot of people want to admit. However in the same breath, I would have to ask if they would have won it without Tate Cox or without Garrison Collins or Trey Short or even Clint Stepp, who did a pretty decent job denying Hicks the ball last night. All in all, I felt that JBS is , top to bottom, the most talented team in the region when they utilize ALL of their tools. If they go to Rupp and get everyone involved, they will make a good run at Warren Central, but if they go down and try to make it a one or two man show, it will not be a pretty sight.
