It is ridiculous to hold the regional tournament at Powell County. According to the KHSAA by-laws, in order to host the regional tournament, a gym must fit 3 criteria. It has to seat 3500 people, have adequate parking for that number, and be centrally located in the region. According to these rules, the tournament should be rotated between Knott and Perry. The 14th Region is the only one in the state to rotate among 6 sites. My personal opinion is that Knott and Perry should be included. Breathitt is on the fringe. Letcher isn't big enough, Hazard does not have the parking, and Powell is definitely not centrally located.

I think the gyms should be big enough and have parking (there's no way Hazard should have it with their parking nightmare), but I don't see how you penalize a school for its location if it has a nice facility.

Knott County is no more centrally located than Powell County.:confused: It's an hour and 45 minute drive from where I live to Hindman. Knott Central is probably as close in location to as many 15th region schools as it is 14th.

Sat in the lot after the game for 10 minutes and then moving through the town itself was at a snail's pace, first impression was this is a terrible place to hold a regional game when the place is packed, may be easy to get out when only 2000 there. Feel sorry for those in attendance Monday and Tuesday if things aren't better.

I had no problem at all getting out. I parked in the gym parking lot and was on the Mt. Parkway within a few minutes after the game Thursday night. Now, there is some road construction in town on the entrance route to the gym, but it wasn't a problem.

Did you leave after first or second game? We sat in the gym for 10 minutes after the KCC/PCC game just the first game people could leave while the second game people could get in. Also,parked in gym lot, but moved real slow getting to the road and then slow through town until getting on Parkway. Loved the atmosphere though while in the gym, maybe they should have two seesions. 5:30 and 8:30

It seems to me that all you have done on here is wine and complain. Can't you just enjoy what a great tourny this has been so far. I've been to every game so far and had zero problems. The gym has plenty of parking and it seats 3500. It's never took me 10 minutes to get in or to get out so I have no idea what your doing! Just enjoy it for what it is o.k because it could be worse! It seems there's always someone who has something to complain about no matter how good you have it!:ohbrother:

After Wed night first game took us about 2 minutes to get out. Well organized parking before and after. It takes me about 1 hour and 35 minutes from Letcher County.

Let's be honest, this thread has nothing to do with gym space(Hazard?) or parking convinience (knott/Hazard/Breathitt?), but rather it is about the fact that some people get irked that any school in the 56th district would or could host a regional tournament. I am only an outside observer looking in but that "ain't" hard to see.

The former 53rd district and the 56th never hosted anything. Perry, Knott, and Breathitt have had the strangle hold for many years. Once every 6 years is not going to hurt anyone except with homecourt advantage.

It seats 3500 and the parking is 100 times better than Hazard so parking isnt an issue. The only problem is the central location. But if you do that then you will just have the tourny in Perry County every year and that wouldnt be to fair would it?

I don't see anything wrong with it being at Powell. I know the distance is a little much for some, but I would imagine that the distance to anywhere else for Powell Co. would be the same. I don't think they should be punished for their location. They are a part of the 14th and they have the facilities.

 

Personally, I would think that Powell, Perry, Knott and, possibly, Letcher are the only ones with adequate facilities. Breathitt has a nice gym, but the parking isn't much better than Riverside Christian's. Hazard has a historically, significant gym, but it needs several upgrades particularly in the locker room area and it's parking is, actually, worse than Breathitt's.
