I have to put in a word for the best leader of young men I've ever met and a fine coach. He was allowed only one year at Rose Hill to demonstrate just how much he could get out of a group of boys willing to work. That man is Ron Reed...and there are too few like him.

I had only a moment to send a quick congratulations earlier, but would like to add another thought. My own daughter has competed against Chinwe for 4 years, including this their senior season. Each time they have met it has become quite a physical contest...nothing uncalled for, just good aggressive play. My daughter considers her play against Okoro as a way to measure her own performance...Okoro being the standard in her mind, so much does she respect her as a player. It was only a week ago that my daughter asked me to look at some pictures on her computer screen, telling me that the girl in the photos was beautiful. On the screen were Okoro's senior pictures. I agreed, but was more pleased to know the tough competition between them was understood by both to be only that...competition, a game...hard-fought, but still just a game. We wish Chinwe continued success on the court and in her college career as a track athlete.

By no means an excuse, but the game was originally scheduled to begin at 8:00 and did not start until after 10:00. By then, the Lady Royals, having left school before 11:00 am, were a bit flat. They attended the Louisville women's basketball game and then sat around in the Bellarmine gym until game time...not the best was to prepare for a game, but unavoidable. Shelby County had more quality athletes on the floor...and shot the lights out. Rachelle Gray (sp?) scored at will. As regards rebounds...fewer misses on the defensive end, tired legs and as a result not the best effort.

I hope the Lady Rams recognize the good things that come out of such a game. They certainly have lost some close games of late.

Come on, Frances. Have the backbone to tell us which of our daughters have not "grown up to be beautiful young ladies...";)

Well said, Incognito...and I agree. I don't expect fairness and try not to demand it. I do, however, try to point out when it is lacking, if for no other reason than to call those responsible to account. In this context what is in my view...how shall I say it...less than ideal journalism. As for the kind of recognition that really matters...I've always told my own children with respect to sports...and this is rather trite, but makes the same point as Cvillecat...those that know, know.

I've accused no one of bias...not on the part of the media nor of those coaches who will vote on the matter. Neither am I campaigning for any player, although I readily admit my own bias. This entire discussion for me revolves around the only article I've read to date about the matter, the Cats Pause season preview, in which the author described Rebecca Gray as the clear favorite for the title of Miss Basketball and chose to illustrate his suggestion by citing her stats. What was obvious to me was his failure to demonstrate that at least one other candidate had better figures...and I suspect there are others. How difficult would it have been to do some elementary research for such an article? And how does one know just who is the favorite? Did he conduct a poll? I would further point out...and I am open for correction on the matter...that most of those who will cast a vote will have never seen those players about whom they are supposed to make a judgment. That can't be avoided and I don't fret about it. What is a problem, and I would hope that others more closely associated with the process would share my concerns, is that there are coaches who will undoubtedly cast their vote based entirely upon what they read in Cats Pause. They should have been given more accurate and comprehensive information. Those players who are eligible deserve a more careful and thorough consideration.

However true it may be, it doesn't explain why Miss Gray was spoken of as such a clear frontrunner prior to the start of the current season. After all, Queen and Terry were members of last year's state runner-up team that compiled a 27-8 record. My point remains the same...until and unless you tell players to lace up their shoes and decide the matter in a one-on-one contest, you are left with a popularity contest (which is fine, but call it that) or recognizing a player's accomplishments by means of considering career or single season numbers. No one has "proven" anything more than another at this point, other than what they have done on the court. In that regard...a number of players have "proven" a great deal. I can't understand the resistance to the simple proposal of considering everyone's numbers. One is free to have a preference for a certain player or a style of play...and clearly it is next to impossible to determine who is the "best" player without seeing them go head-to-head...but I would hope that when coaches try to seriously compare players, they, if anyone, would use standards of performance...(here it is again) stats.

Well said, Scooterbob...and you highlight a point I tried to make in another thread. To suggest that other's stats be considered alongside Gray's is not to suggest that she is undeserving. It is to observe that sportswriters and others do no more than recycle opinions when they report that she is the clear frontrunner (and one can find coaches or recruiters who would say the same thing about Brown, Queen, Terry, etc) without at some point demonstrating it with what is the only measuring stick we have in sports...a record of performances over time, averages, stats. This discussion quickly takes on the appearance of tearing down one kid to build up another precisely because that objective element is so lacking...and the players don't deserve that.
