Powell didn’t shoot the ball well and Hazard did is the short answer here. Powell’s sophomore PG Conner Morguson, a very good guard, had an off night shooting and the Pirates seemed out of sync much of the game. They did pull within 4 late in the game but Hazard held on. The Bulldog’s Trace Kincaid lit up the scoreboard with 3’s, particularly in the first half. He also did a great job defensively. When Kincaid and Seth Caudill both are playing well Hazard is very good.

Through the three games they have played each team has scored a total of 200 points. That’s as even as it gets.

Douglass had better shoot free throws from here on much better than 13 for 23. The long time coach of Clay County Tigers, the late great Bobby Keith, was fond of saying, “two things that aren’t around very long, dogs that chase cars and basketball teams that can’t make free throws.”

Is anyone broadcasting the game on a TV stream feed? The 14th Region has had five different streaming services broadcasting all or parts of the girls and boys tournaments.

These two played in mid-February in Hazard and it was a close game throughout with Hazard finally winning 75-70. The Bulldogs’ Seth Caudill scored 34. I think on the neutral court at Breathitt Coliseum that the Pirates could win the championship in another close game. But they will need all hands on deck to do it. In the loss during the season to the Bulldogs they got a a poor shooting performance from their PG Conner Morguson, who was 0-8. He’s a threat from deep and very talented at setting his teammates up for points. If he’s in the form he’s capable of and the Pirates shots are falling they are in good shape. But the same can be said about Hazard as well. Seth Caudill and Trace Kincaid can light up the scoreboard. And their center Tucker Johnson is strong and physical on the interior. Powell’s defense is really going to have to hustle like crazy, particular finding a way to slow down Caudill. If he gets in the 30’s again on them then they may be in trouble. This should be a very interesting 14th regional championship game.

How well does Assumption match up with GRC? The Lady Cards look like an All Star team. They won their three regional games by an average of 50.3 points.

Owensboro Catholic defeated Daviess County in the 3rd this afternoon.

GRC won their three regional games by a total margin of 151 points. That may be the most dominating regional championship run in the history of the KHSAA, if any such records are kept.

Powell County earned their first trip to the championship game since they last won the region in 2003. They were down by 9 points in the 4th quarter but mounted a strong comeback. They will play Hazard, a 57-46 winner in the other semifinal game over Wolfe County.

If you’re able to make it to the game at the Breathitt Coliseum, a beautiful facility, you will hear one of the loudest crowd noises for a game anywhere in the state. It can get deafening in the dome.

Christian County’s last region before consolidation with HopTown. My guess is we will be seeing the name Christian County in the Sweet 16 at Rupp many times in the near future and beyond.

This was the roughest high school game I’ve seen in quite a while. The officials called very little. It took blood just about to get a whistle, both ways. Driving to the middle was just asking for it, lol. I think the 14th swapped out with the 16th this year. Evidently that’s how they call it in that region. I suppose having usual potent teams in that region such as Ashland and Boyd leads to a looser called game. The 14th calls it a little closer imo. But it was both ways, pretty consistent. Teams have to adapt, and they did to a degree. It’s usually “let ‘em play” at the state tournament too, so these type officiated games are good preparation to whoever makes it to Rupp. Darn good entertaining game for sure.

Andy Griffith is tops on my list but I’m from an older generation. Some of my favorites are (in no particular order) Sergeant Bilko, The Beverly Hillbillies (however, they mention eating possums a lot. I personally don’t know any Appalachians that eat possums, but I think the Clampetts were from the Missouri Ozarks in the show), I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, Green Acres, All in the Family, The Jefferson’s, Sanford and Son, Seinfeld, Cheers, Taxi, to name a few.

Is he back playing? I picked North Hardin in a Sweet 16 contest bracket.

I believe Powell County will come out on top in this one. The Pirates looked really sharp in the district tournament and are playing well. They start a veteran lineup of four seniors to go with high scoring sophomore guard Conner Morguson, and all five starters can put points on the board. They don’t have to rely on 1 or 2 players to carry the weight. And although they aren’t loaded with height, they have mostly 6’2 range players, that are definitely not vertically challenged, particularly district MVP Bryson Edwards.

This is a very difficult game to predict. Basically a toss up. I think it will be close right to the end and whoever gets a few breaks or bounces in the closing minutes will win the game.

The Wolves are a more experienced and balanced team but the Bobcats have the state’s leading scorer in junior Corey Flinchum and his 39 ppg. He had over 50 against them in Campton in their last matchup, a Lee County win. So, they’ll have to figure out a way to contain him as much as possible. But he will need some help with his supporting cast. They start a senior but the other three starters are two freshmen and an eighth grader. On the other hand Wolfe County starts four seniors and a junior.

So I assume from your post that these two schools will consolidate next year. What will be their official school name and mascot? And what will the enrollment be?

Lee County and Wolfe County both got the best draw they could get. Knott Central wins their district and their reward is playing Hazard in the first round.

Where will the region be held?

Is the region held at EKU? That’s where it usually is played.

Wonderful post! I was at the Hopkinsville vs Clay County championship game in 1985. I was cheering for Clay County because they border my home county. We are not in their region but Appalachians just the same. But the Clay County Tigers lost by 1 point that night to a very good HopTown team. Clay’s Richie Farmer was a freshman for them that season. Of course they won the state championship two years later themselves during Richie’s junior year.

This is a HUGE upset! Especially considering it was at Knox.
