I have been acquainted with Rex for about 30 years and always admired his great attitude and personality. Rex is a quality guy and one of our areas great sports guys for 3 decades. I will miss seeing him on the sidelines. Good luck Rex!:thumb:

Unfortunately, the game will be at the high school. There was a strong sentiment that it should have been at the park since this is where all these former players grew up playing even before their high school days. I suspect that they did not want to give up concessions or paid admissions. The park would have been a great touch, pass the hat like the old days, I really think folks would have stepped up.

During this 5 year span the were 11 players selected All State 14 times. This has to be the be one of the best stretches of baseball by one school ever.

Tomorrow, the 1965-1969 Tomcat baseball teams are having a reunion. These teams went 107-11, winning 3 consecutive state championships bookended by 2 runner-up 1-0 losses in the state finals. These teams were 2-4 runs away from winning 5 straight championships! Is any one planning to attend? I hope to as I either know or know of many of these players. Hats off to Bobby Lynch for pulling this together, there deserve to be recognized.:ylsuper:

I understand where you guys are coming from, trust me. I am not questioning that disparities can and will occur, the key word if you reread my posts is the word "unreasonable" disparity. This means taking the disparity issue to the highest degree. I think the jest of this thread refers to the Ashland-Rose Hill game(I could be wrong in my assumption and please lets not get on that bandwagon) where free throws were 37-10 in favor of Ashland. I think all will agree these two teams were very close in talent. I am not questioning the calls in this game at all here, just that this type of "disparity" is probably the unusual exception. And don't worry if you still disagree, I am not offended.:notworthy:

No question, I agree completely, but there is typically not a large unreasonable disparity by games end given two equally talented teams. You surely agree that a large unreasonable disparity is the rare exception.

Generally speaking, given relatively equal talent on opposing teams, I believe the suggestion is that the "law of averages" will win out in the end and fouls, violations, etc. typically will come fairly close to balancing out over the course of an athletic event. Although this is not always the case, a reasonable person would probably conclude so.

Several of us Rose Hill fans noticed the error when it occurred . It did not appear the GC was trying to make a large issue of the error at the time, which was a bit surprising. Nonetheless, it was a very entertaining game. Hats off the Fraley, I thought he handled himself very well in this game. I am sure it's always tough to come back the first time to where you coached before. I hope he does well with GC.

My recollection is that Harkins came to Ashland as a sophomore. I believe Kovach was always in the Ashland system.

I think you are referring to Michael Lynch(David's son) the left hander with the great shooting touch, he was a little younger than Chris(Bill's son), who I believe was right handed.

Greg Swift, extremely effective point guard, Dale Dummitt the other guard. The small forward position was manned by either Mark Swift or Daryl Smith.

Many of you are probably not familiar with the 1977 Tomcats, but the Paul Patterson(never lost to a 16th region opponent) coached Tomcats made it to the state tournament semifinals on Saturday morning before losing to the eventual champion, ironically Louisville Ballard. How would this game play out with the disciplined Patterson offense and defense against the run happy Lions. Patterson had 2 first team All State players(as well as Ky-Indiana All Stars) in Jeff Kovach and Jim Harkins, Elliott probably has 2 to 4 All State caliber players in Ferguson, Faulkner, Faulkner and Knipp. I loved this Ashland team but have the utmost respect and admiration for what this Elliott team has and is still accomplishing. I predict a 70-70 overtime game. How's that for a cop out? PS-Elliott County-Bring the 16th Region a State Championship!!

It is my understanding, from a very reliable source, that every member of the Derek Smith All Stars AAU team made the list. Congratulations to these worthy players, this may be a FIRST for any state AAU program.:thumb:

I think one of the key factors in the decline of AHS basketball is that it doesn't appear that anyone in a leadership position has embraced the concept of AAU basketball. Like it or not, the elite players, or those who become elite, follow the AAU path from a early age. I am not saying I agree or disagree with the AAU concept, but like it or not, it is here to stay. The elite players embrace basketball 12 months a year. I think AHS wants to be a good all around sports program, which they are, and not focus solely on basketball, which is probably the proper perspective to have. However, it's difficult to excel sometimes when athletes get spread too thin. It is my opinion, unless someone in the Ashland system fully embraces AAU, it will be difficult for AHS to become an elite program again. The perfect example is Elliott County, which doesn't play football(or soccer I believe), the Faulkners have literally played hundreds of basketball games over the past 10 years or so and have developed(along with a lot of heart)a skill set that is difficult to compete with. Also, Jon VanHoose at Russell. These are division I type players who full dedicate themselves to basketball only.

They went box and one on Euton most of the game. That hepled Jackson to find some holes.

I have had the opportunity to see both Miller and Hopson this year. I think they are both great players at about the same level. However, I give Miller the nod for the way he handles himself. He seems very humble and just plays the game, no "me" attitude. Hopson wasn't bad, but I really liked Millers class.

What is the date and time of Ashland-Fairview as well as Boyd-Rose Hill? Thanks.

This is a tough time for Ashland. This wasn't really supposed to be a big year but they got off to such a nice start to the season that perhaps expectations become a bit unreasonable. I wonder how much the loss of Rowe hurt this team mentally. He seemed to be on his way to becoming a solid inside player, his loss has made Ashland really thin on the inside. Also, the loss of your own basketball court had to be a real downer. I still think this can be a dangerous team. You know what happens when a Cat gets backed into a corner. Nonetheless, another nice win for an improving Rose Hill team. The coaching staff has done a nice job getting a lot of players involved. Confidence is everything heading down the stretch. Rose Hill has it and I hope Ashland gets theirs back. Good luck to all! One other thing, I have really enjoyed watching Matt Thomas for several years now. He plays hard and with nothing but class. Most good young players eventually become a bit cocky and arrogant by the time they are seniors. Not Matt, pure class all the way.
