My thought is that it is better for very weak programs to opt out under the current system. That said, the system should change. Maybe implement a Harbin ratings system or similar program and let that system determine the strongest teams in each class. The playoffs would include only the top 8-12 teams in each class. The KHSAA participation trophy mentality is the problem here.

I see a 4-6 season on the horizon for the Neers.

Any chance we see a two headed monster at QB for the Birds? The different skill sets of Litmer and Lorenzen could make the team very difficult to prepare for if both see snaps at multiple positions including QB.

I may be in the minority, but I'd prefer if this game was deeper into the season. That way, neither team can say "It was the first game. We were not in sync yet. If this game was played today, the outcome would be different. We're a much better team now, than when the season started. Etc..."

Guru, can you elaborate on what is going on in the Boone draw area and how the others you mention are different in significant ways?

My point is that Jeffersontown, despite being a school faced with grinding poverty among it's students, is successfully fielding a competitive football team. Boone's issue seems to be getting enough kids motivated and involved to even field a competitive team. How does the Jeffersontown staff keep kids involved in their program while Boone cannot? Also, allowing a lower classification due to not being competitive, could open a Pandora's box throughout the state.

I've heard, through my limited grapevine, that the administration, including the AD, could be a reason that Scott is not getting top notch applicants for the job. It seems that the football program is almost an afterthought and that resources for the program are doled out sparingly when compared to other sports and school activities/clubs. Does anyone have any real insight on this?

How is the selection committee selected?

It seems to me that since the precedent has been set that a Highlands head coach must have some fairly substantial Head Coaching experience, the current OC would not be a qualified candidate for the position.

I'm of the understanding that his terms involve passing the head coaching torch to his son, the current Offensive Coordinator, when he goes. So I'll play devil's advocate here and state that I don't think that will be the case. Just one guy's opinion.

I agree with this 100%. The question could be raised that, when the realization hits that someone else is actually next man up, does the current crew stick around for a few years, or move on more quickly than had been anticipated?

Well, if you believe some of those who helped bring Coach Sphire to town, he was the first choice all along, but had to be 'convinced' to uproot his family and come on board. Supposedly, after the 1st hire bailed, the pot was sweetened to get the 'convincing' done.

No doubt both things are true, but in Fort Thomas, it has always been about winning championships. Continuity, when it involves losing the big games, can only go so far.

Bumping this one again since we will need some football angle to talk about all Winter. So three years in and Highlands still has a Championship drought under the new leadership team. Past threads regarding the coaching situations at Highlands have seen the HHS faithful demanding championships and nothing less. Serious questions: Has the Highlands football community become accepting of no longer being a Championship level program? Will changes be demanded if, after year 4, there is still no new Championship trophy in the case at HHS? Will the deal brokers who engineered bringing the current crew on board be part of the process if a change is sought after next year? Inquiring minds want to know...

As others mentioned, Cooper played more 4 man front in the 2nd game. Plus, the coverage options for both 3 and 4 man alignments are what were likely changed up from game 1 to game 2. Having been gouged for well over 400 rushing yards in game 1, the Cooper D effectively eliminated the Highlands run game by changing up coverage assignments in game 2. I've not gone back to view the games side by side, so I cannot comment with any knowledge as to what cover changes may have been made. But when an offense loses 250+ yards in rushing and 144 in passing from 1 game to the next, against the same opponent, the Cooper defensive coaches saw something in game 1, that they adjusted for in game 2. That said, those changes likely would have been less effective had Highlands changed up the offense at some point.

I see your point, but how deep into the game should it take to realize that a strategy is not being effective against a particular defense? After the 1st quarter or half, some adjustment was warranted to try to get the offense some traction. Now we look forward to next year. Again.
