Mayfield is 1-10 all time against Danville. 5 losses in state championship games and 5 losses in state semifinal games, with their lone win coming at Danville in the final four of Mayfield’s 15-0 2002 State Championship season.

Mayfield has only lost to one team more than once in their 25 state title game appearances and that’s Danville, that has beaten them all 5 times they have faced off in championship games. Danville has also beat them several other times in final four matchups keeping the Cardinals out of multiple other state finals games. Danville has definitely historically been Mayfield’s Achilles heel that has kept them from achieving even far more success than their long list of achievements that they have compiled despite the Danville curse.

Prior to 1975 there were only 3 classes in KY. 3A was all just Louisville schools. 1A was all the very small schools. And 2A, which Mayfield was in, was everyone else in the state. Meaning that Mayfield was having to compete against many teams over twice their size in order to win a state championship. They were competing against the likes of Highlands, Hopkinsville, Paducah Tilghman, Madisonville, Owensboro, Tates Creek, Bryan Station, Lafayette and many other big schools to win a state championship. Not saying it couldn’t have been done but it just never happened. Once they went to 4 classes in 1975 it evened things out a bit and that’s when you start to see Mayfield’s playoff success. Since 1976 they have been to 26 state title games in 48 years.

That 2003 Boyle County team was GOOD!

North Hardin wasn’t a bad team at all. Look at their schedule. They played some respectable games against good teams. They had to forfeit all their wins but one so of course their RPI was low. It’s skewed by the forfeits. Now as for their loss in the playoffs, I have no idea how they lost that one. I think they were better than McCracken but I might be wrong.

I just don’t see OCath scoring more on Mayfield than anyone else has this year but I could definitely be wrong. LCAs 36 is the season high given up by Mayfield so far.

I agree with a lot of that but OCath put up 418 yards of offense against Owensboro, with Atwell accounting for 380 of it, and they only scored 33.

I totally agree. I think my teams ranked 3 through 8 could all beat each other on any given night, regardless of who beat who in the regular season.

I would like to see how everyone would rank the 12 remaining teams playing for state championships this weekend. Of course this is a very subjective topic so people’s rankings will differ, but just curious to see what everyone thinks. I’ll go first: 1. Boyle County 2. Trinity 3. Covington Catholic 4. Mayfield 5. CAL 6. Bryan Station 7. Bowling Green 8. Cooper 9. Owensboro Catholic 10. Pikeville 11. Raceland 12. Bell County

I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing a shootout, which is very possible.

Catholic did not dominate Henderson anymore than Mayfield did. Mayfield had the ball with 6 minutes left up 38-17 in Henderson territory driving to make it 45-17. Cartwright drops back to throw and the ball completely slips out of his hand and goes ten yards backwards and Henderson goes on to score. Mayfield then runs out the clock. OCath gave up over 100 more yards of offense to Henderson than Mayfield did. When Mayfield scrimmaged Owensboro they were without 3 starters, including Starks. Mayfield has played 3 teams tougher than OCaths best opponent. Mayfield held Beechwood to their lowest scoring game of the season. Mayfield held LCA to fewer points than Boyle County did and beat them by twice as much as Boyle. Mayfield held Paducah Tilghman to their second lowest scoring total on the season (second only to CovCath, which is undefeated and playing in the 4A championship.) You can try to pick this team apart all day long but if you look at the whole picture, what they’ve done is impressive. Mayfield would love for OCath to stack the box to stop Starks. They’ve got athletes all over the field at WR.

I’m really thinking that Atwell is going to have to rush for 150+ yards for OCath to have a chance to win this game. Not saying it can’t be done but I feel like that will have to happen for them to pull off the win. Mayfield just had a really good QB throw for 420 yards on them last week and the team still didn’t manage to score 30 points.

In my opinion, the hardest thing to prepare for in football is a dual threat QB, especially one with his size and arm strength. This could be Mayfield’s toughest test yet.

That Graves QB lived less than 5 houses from Mayfield High School. His dad lived 5 minutes outside Mayfield but he always lived with his mom where you could throw a rock and hit MHS. The Murray kid’s entire family is from Mayfield and he was treated very wrong by Murray’s last coach, that is the only reason he moved. The Whiteside kids dad and family are from Mayfield. He lived with his mom for a while in Murray but he’s not a “Calloway” kid by any means. You’re making it sound like kids from all over West KY flock to Mayfield and that couldn’t be further from the truth. We just lost our QB of the future this past offseason to McCracken County. It happens everywhere. He started there this year as a sophomore and led the Mustangs to the third round of the playoffs.

No. He got a few carries in garbage time in running clock games but no, Mayfield has two senior RBs. But the kid did run 3 kickoffs back for TD on Varsity this year. Just gets it natural. He’s fun to watch!

While I definitely agree, they haven’t played a good team since September 8th. That’s almost 3 months ago. Does this have any bearing on this game?

I agree. Atwell is going to be a nightmare for whoever wins this game. And he has a great supporting cast as well.

The 2019 title game was one of the wildest finishes in state championship game of all time!

People get so upset over statements like that. Is it wrong for people to have an opinion of who the best teams are? Do you look at a poll and if you don’t see your team at #1 do you just say the heck with the rest of the season, I guess everyone doesn’t think we’re the best team so we just shouldn’t play anymore?

There was actually quite a large crowd. I couldn’t believe how many people were there. It was a great time!
