Looking at head coaches in Lexington that would "upgrade" from taking this job would think that limits this to coaches at Tates Creek, Lafayette or Dunbar.

This makes me want Atherton to win.

I don't get going for 2 in that situation whatsoever. There was over 3 minutes still to play in the game. That is like hitting on 13 or 14 in blackjack with the dealer showing a 6. Doesn't make any sense from risk/reward standpoint? But hey, got to play your hand!

I always have the same question when I hear this point (hear it on tv all the time)... If you are under center around the goal line, what are you doing with the ball to get it to your RB? Does your QB not go 4-5 yards backwards to "handoff" the ball? Now if people mentioned angles or momentum created by angles in these situations, I'd understand a bit more. A RB/QB mesh point from straight ahead under center (dotted I) is a different momentum/angle than a RB taking a shotgun meshpoint from side saddle next to the QB. That is the angle/momentum a lot of folks have serious opinions about in short yardage situations. But the simple statement, shotgun on goal line is dumb because it puts the ball farther away is disingenuous. Every I formation/power I formation (most often UC goalline formation) has the ball go backwards 4-5 yards to get the "dot" back the ball. Unless you are running sneak/wedge blocking play, the ball will always travel 4-5 yards deep into the backfield..

Absolutely agreed! It is so easy to say and type but much much harder in practice. Makes those who can do it in reality, giants of men.

I did not see the play in question, it sounds like it was a bad call. However, I don't agree with the logic that a really bad call justifies someone acting out of control. I agree with you, the ref should T him up and try his best to diffuse the situation. On a bigger, more broad (soapbox) thought, I think very strongly that the coach should maintain his composure. A coach's behavior (can apply to anyone really) should not be contingent on a call/no call. Human beings make mistakes (refs are people, people screw up), and we have to assume bad calls are going to happen. The coaches who do not flinch, knowing they can only control what they can control, and keep their energy and thoughts into things they can affect are the real ones helping their team in these type of moments. They are leading their players by example, showing them to keep their minds on making the next play, controlling what you can control. When you lose your mind at a call, which you have no control over, you open the door to your team then giving their energy to things they can't control and before you know it, we are out of the game on the road to a loss, blaming somebody else for the loss we earned. This is no way a criticism or shot at Coach Hester. I'm sure he is doing a great job leading those young men, and I love the fact that someone who was so talented and skillful as a player, is now giving back as a coach.

80% of the posts about this game so far are discussing the officiating. Seems to be a theme: watch the game, talk about the referees afterward, get mad at the semi-volunteers for trying, forget about the players and plays that made the game. Feels like an ESPN post game show! ? Also, if the coach is allowed to be upset, why can't the referee be upset for being screamed at? The logic behind how we excuse behavior for some and not for others doesn't always make a ton of sense to me. I also played against Hester when he was at SK in the 8th regional. He was an extremely good ball player and PG.

The same teacher shortage that is affecting education, especially in JCPS, is affecting football coaching too. HS football coaches do not grow on trees and their pay to do it hasn't changed this millennium. What has increased are difficult parents, and more strongly opinionated observers. Qualified football coaches with WingT backgrounds literally are becoming extinct. Sounds like there is a JCPS school out there who needs YOU!

How would you describe a good defensive coordinator? How do you become a physical team? What is the process that leads being a "good d-coordinator?"

Lafayette made the state finals both of those years they beat SK in the playoffs (15', 16'). SK is a very respected football program to everyone outside NKY. Coach Lucas and Coach Marksberry are some of the best! I hope they make a good hire.

And the other public schools DO NOT have, from a facilities and campus perspective, what Douglass has.

The district built the school and all athletic facilities. First class everywhere there.

High school football coaches are getting harder and harder to come by. They are receiving less and less support every year. From financial stipends not changing for over 20 years, to parent and community involvement disappearing slowly each year. Have you noticed how many resignations happen each year? Maybe instead of arguing about nothing over the message boards, you volunteer and help out in your community and make a positive difference? If you feel so strongly about it. Every single high school program in this state could use more help. We could all use more fountains and less drains. Just a thought I think needed to be said! Everyone have a good day!
