Great game by both teams! With about 30 seconds to go and WV down two with the ball, the refs called a horrible illegal screen call on WV that made a huge difference at the end. I saw video of the play and didn’t even look like the WV player touched the guy, he just tripped on his own feet. Overall it was a very good officiated game, and they let the teams play, but unfortunately a very bad call at the end did take away from the players truly deciding it at the end.

I saw that you had 12th region officials.  If you had a well officiated game you were fortunate.  I don't recall them calling an illegal screen all year in their own region............

It was a horrible call, and not surprising being from the 12th.   What I didn't love is when they got in Coach Hester's face on the sideline after blowing the call.  I think in the moment, you have to realize that everything is on the line and the coach is allowed to be upset.  Walk away. 

Seems to be a theme: Blow a call, justify the blown call and get mad at coach for being upset after blowing a call.

Also, if the coach is allowed to be upset, why can't the referee be upset for being screamed at? The logic behind how we excuse behavior for some and not for others doesn't always make a ton of sense to me. I also played against Hester when he was at SK in the 8th regional. He was an extremely good ball player and PG.

Which you just added another post talking about officiating. So now that 80% has gone up even more, and now I am going to comment on it too so now the 80% keeps going up. ?

With that said I know I thought the refs overall had a very good game. Unfortunately though they did make a horrible call at the very end of the game, that did take the game away some from being decided by the players. So yes when a phantom call gets call at the end of the game, that does play into the outcome some, it is going to get mentioned. Doesn't mean WV would have won, as they still were down 2 at that time and still would have had to score. However, it did change how the end of the game played out. Instead of having the ball down two with a possible chance to win it with under 30 seconds to play. They were instead down 4 with under 30 to go, because of a bad call. Besides that it was a very good game, with both teams making big plays throughout.

Did you see the play in question?  A ref should never get to chest to chest with a coach.  Walk away or T him up.  

It's being discussed because it essentially iced the game up.  The biggest plays of any game are always discussed the most.

I was trying to add context to a situation I have seen numerous times this season.

There were only five replies when you posted this. So the 80% really isn’t that big a deal.

I did not see the play in question, it sounds like it was a bad call. However, I don't agree with the logic that a really bad call justifies someone acting out of control. I agree with you, the ref should T him up and try his best to diffuse the situation. 

On a bigger, more broad (soapbox) thought, I think very strongly that the coach should maintain his composure. A coach's behavior (can apply to anyone really) should not be contingent on a call/no call. Human beings make mistakes (refs are people, people screw up), and we have to assume bad calls are going to happen. The coaches who do not flinch, knowing they can only control what they can control, and keep their energy and thoughts into things they can affect are the real ones helping their team in these type of moments. They are leading their players by example, showing them to keep their minds on making the next play, controlling what you can control. When you lose your mind at a call, which you have no control over, you open the door to your team then giving their energy to things they can't control and before you know it, we are out of the game on the road to a loss, blaming somebody else for the loss we earned.

This is no way a criticism or shot at Coach Hester. I'm sure he is doing a great job leading those young men, and I love the fact that someone who was so talented and skillful as a player, is now giving back as a coach.

Yes, the coach should maintain his emotions for sure.  I just think when you work year around and your season ends abruptly it's easier said than done.
