I always find these rankings so interesting. For 2027, Ja'Hyde Brown has offers from Alabama, Wisconsin and Louisville....and he's not even ranked in the top 10 in Kentucky according to 247 ?

Format is 3 quarters of full varsity scrimmage then 1 quarter of full JV scrimmage.

CAL takes the trip to Franklin County on Friday 8/15 for the final tune-up of the preseason. CAL is coming off of a good scrimmage overall against Cooper. I think CAL was able to answer some questions they had for this upcoming season. This will be a good test for the CAL secondary as last week against Cooper, they were facing a team trying to replace 7 of their top 9 receivers from 2024. This Friday will be the flip of that as Franklin County returns 4 of their top 5 receivers. As for Franklin County, I'm not sure how their first scrimmage went. I do know they return quite a few offensive weapons, but their biggest question coming into this season, as they march towards a return trip to Lexington, will be how do they replace 7 of their top 9 tacklers on defense. Let's hear what those predictions BGP.

Good scrimmage for both teams. CAL offense will be tough to stop. As for the QB battle, I think Burke played better overall tonight. We’ll see what next week against Franklin County holds. Defensively, not a terrible effort by CAL. A few blown assignments led to a couple of big Cooper plays on their scoring drives. I like where CAL is right now. Cooper will be fine as well & I think they definitely will have enough playmakers on the outside to make another run towards Lexington. CAL has a couple starters get banged up but doesn’t appear to be anything serious. We probably won’t see them in the last scrimmage but they’ll be ready to go by week 1 if I had to take a guess. Anyway, we appreciate the hospitality from the Cooper fans. Had the opportunity to talk with a few in the stands before the scrimmage & in the press box during it. Nice people & best of luck to them the rest of the season.

Appreciate the suggestions! We actually have a Blind Squirrel in Louisville & it’s only a few miles from CAL. Great atmosphere & they host a sand volleyball league in the spring & summer. Bourbon House Pizza might be the choice.

Alright, time for the most important question related to this scrimmage….whats a good place to eat that is local to the area? Local places only please.

KCD was able to get a couple of really solid freshmen this year that they typically wouldn't in past year. Kids that would typically go to other private schools in the area. I know of at least 3 kids that played on the KY FBU team, KY Future Stars, etc.

I appreciate the info. I don't think they'll go the full 3 hours and let the JV finish out whatever time is left; I'm just not sure once the varsity portion if over, how much JV they'll actually do. My guess would be a few series each and then done, so maybe about 30 minutes total or something like that.

Scrimmage starts at 7. The format is below: 2 full quarters of live, game scrimmage with dummy special teams. After halftime, it will be 10 plays each on offense and defense, controlled. After that, it will be a full JV scrimmage, but not sure how long that scrimmage will last.

Ceiling is top 5 in the state for all classes. Floor is top 20 in the state for all classes.

I feel like Male enters this season with a lot of question marks. I know the injury bug hit them the back 1/2 of the year last year, but the team that beat St. X in OT and lost to Trinity by 3 was a far cry from the team that ended the year. Hopefully Chayce Burton is fully healed and ready to have a big season because Male is going to need that from him. Outside of him, they'll need quite a few kids to step up a level to be considered contenders. At this point, and it's weird to say, I would consider them to be the 5th best 6A school in Jefferson County this year and probably the 8th or maybe even 9th best 6A team in the state at this point. I've been wrong plenty of times before, but this is how I see Male entering this year.

You are correct. It’s districts 3 & 4 and districts 5 & 6 this year. Next year, it should be districts 3 & 5 and 4 & 6.

CAL travels to Cooper on Friday, August 8th for the first intersquad scrimmage. Both teams are coming off of trips to the state title game in their respective classes. For Cooper, the biggest challenge this season might be breaking in practically a whole new receiving corp for QB Cam O’Hara. On the defensive side of the ball, Cooper does return their top three tacklers from a year ago, which was a strong point for the Jaguars last year. For CAL, this will be the first time in the last four seasons a Hodge hasn’t been at QB, however, the two battling it out for the starting job are very formidable and should pick right up where the high scoring offense left off. The biggest challenge for CAL appears to be replacing 3/4 of their starting secondary from last year. I'm not sure of the format, but if its similar to last year, it’ll be an open scrimmage for the first 2-3 quarters, then controlled & situational after that. Let us know your thoughts on what to expect?

Wasn't going to win the QB job and was given the opportunity to play another position b/c the team definitely could benefit by having him on the field somewhere. Tried it and decided he wanted to play QB, so I believe he officially transferred out or at least that was what I was told. I'm not sure where he went or is going. Young man was well thought of by the coaches and his teammates, so we wish him well, wherever he lands.

Getting closer by the day. 7v7 part of the preseason is wrapped up. Looking forward to the midnight madness, intrasquad scrimmage coming up in a few days. Always great when full pads go on. Overall, CAL is in a good spot to this point. Definitely had some skill players step up to fill in some gaps left by offseason departures mentioned prior. QB job for CAL is down to Burke & Pfeiffer and you can't go wrong with either choice. It's always possible that we could see a rotation at the position as well depending on the situation on the field.

This is true, but I still find it so hard to believe. I get that some schools simply don’t have the numbers, but struggle thinking that schools like Male, Manual, Ballard, etc. can’t field a total team of just 20 freshmen. I remember coaching at Doss 25 years ago & even we had a freshman only team (22 kids) & played other freshmen only JCPS teams like Southern, PRP, Male, Manual, etc. In fact, we played 9 freshmen only games that year, never played the same team twice & never left Jefferson County to do it. It’s sad that’s it’s fallen off that much.

I'm sure CAL would welcome that, however potentially losing to a 3A school would not do much good for the Tigers if they get beyond the 2nd round of the playoffs. They need to focus on beating Manual for now and winning district. CAL might be able to show them the secret if they ask nicely ?

It's not really a hard turf, just a little "slick" ?. Turf shoes instead of cleats come in handy.

Strange question, but anyone have any idea how old the turf is at St X? The gold & white seem to be fading / missing quite a bit.
