The one he did in the championship game was the best one I've seen at the Sweet 16.

Happens all the time down here in the 8th district. The KHSAA transfer rules might as well not exist.

And none of the above is intended to take away from what she has accomplished. I'm just saying that her level of competition was probably a huge deciding factor. Looking at their schedule, they didn't play any teams that were really good or had a lockdown defender that could make her night a long one.

Like I said in the beginning I haven't watched her play in person. I have watched her highlights and most of those consist of her getting a rebound or loose ball and dribbling the full length of the court and scoring. I've seen no highlights of her facing an established double team in the full court and going the length of the floor. Anyone that has ever been doubled in the half court knows that if the two defenders doubling you aren't good defenders you're going to score anyway. Often they will get in each other's way and if you know how to attack double teams they really aren't that hard to beat if they're not good defenders. She's going to have a much harder time scoring at WKU because there are plenty of D1 defenders that can keep her in front of them and have the length to contest that pull-up jumper. I would rather face a mediocre double team than a solid defender any day.

He did say overall contributions to the team so maybe her defense was a big factor. I haven't seen the girl play but I can imagine that they hide her on defense to keep her from getting fouls. Maybe she's a terrible defender. I don't know. Now as far as being relieved to only see one defender against her at the next level, I don't know about that. 1 NCAA D1 defender > 2 or 3 defenders from the schedule she played

Why in the world would he leave Henderson County?

Will they get back to where they were or will it stay down? It may be hard to find a good replacement if the talent pool isn't what it used to be and they have a quick trigger finger if a coach doesn't win right away.

I have to agree with sweet16. I'm not trying to kick a man while he's down but Larson put together the first losing season at PT in quite some time. I'm having a hard time remembering the last time they didn't win 20 games or more. Keep in mind my only knowledge of Larson's coaching was when he was at Livingston Central. Now I'm a 8th district/2nd region guy so I'm not 100% in the know about what PT did or didn't have on their roster this year. Is that still one of the better talent pools in the region or has the pickings gotten slim since McCracken County came to fruition?

It doesn't make sense to me either. Christian County has been young for the past 2 seasons and Hickey still got them to region. They nearly pull a big upset in the district championship this year against Hoptown. Next season I feel like they have a good chance to compete with the top teams in the region. I just don't think now is the time to be making a coaching change.

I'm sure it was a landslide. Creech probably only got votes from EKY and Boley carried the rest of the state. She was just unfortunate to be in the same class as Boley.

Arnika Brown from Christian County may be the most athletically talented player in state history but had a slew of off the court problems that cost her a scholarship at Kentucky and a WNBA career.

I had a lot of friends that would take their sons up just for Saturday's games. They were able to watch the semifinals and championship games and go back home that night without having to get a hotel room. I'd be willing to bet there are a lot of father-son outings that stopped because of the new format taking too much of a toll on their schedule and wallet.

You took the words right out of my mouth! Whitney Creech is a fine player and probably would have won Miss Basketball in most years, but we have had something special in our state the last few years. Erin Boley is not only the best player in Kentucky and arguably the nation this season, but she is probably the best player in Kentucky history. Stats are just that - stats. You can't quantify the talent and potential that Erin has. She played on a great team, played against great competition and still put up big time numbers. We may never see another player like her again in our lifetimes. Congratulations to a more than deserving young lady!

That's a good point and triggered me to think of something I hadn't really thought of before. How much of a factor do you think it is that several schools that make it to the Sweet 16 now aren't a true representation of that town/county? Don't shoot me for using Taylor County as an example but Goodin is the only key player on that team that is truly a Taylor Countian. There are a lot of schools that have kids transfer in to stack the deck and leave the locals sitting on the bench or not on the team period. Maybe it's no factor at all but it got my wheels turning.

I don't have a problem with it. I'm just providing feedback. I said that I loved that he was doing it because stuff like this is really interesting to me. Obviously I don't have to time to research it all myself so I really appreciate that someone has taken the time to do it.

Bring back voting after the Sweet 16! I don't think it changes anything this year but I liked it better the old way. Anthony Hickey doesn't win the award without his performance at the state tournament. And just think if Hollingsworth and Sloan were seniors this year. Voting before the tournament would have favored Sloan while I would be willing to bet voting after the tournament would seal the deal for Hollingsworth. Voting before says the Sweet 16 has no significance!

I would say that Mason Faulkner also being on the ballot hurt Quentin Goodin more than Coach Gatewood's popularity did. I'm sure there are plenty of coaches in that area of the state that think Faulkner is better. They indicated so by the region POY being split.

I understand that but there were a lot of controversial calls that impacted the game in the 4th quarter. They play 10 times and South Laurel wins 8 times. Just giving my 2 cents though. Your argument definitely holds water better than mine though. :thumb:

I agree with this and would even say that South Laurel should be ahead of them too. The way that game ended was tragic. South Laurel was the better team.

Case BL-23-3– Is it permissible for students to be counted present for participation/attendance at regular season and KHSAA district level events? Not within the KHSAA Bylaws and policies. Schools must comply with the policies of the Kentucky Department of Education regarding attendance. It should be noted that KRS 159.035(2)(b) clearly states that the educational enhancement opportunities allowed by that statute may not include interscholastic athletics. If a student does leave school before the scheduled end of the day for any reason, the time missed is recorded in the daily attendance log of the school as an attendance event for that student. Although local board policy may allow the student to ‘make-up’ any missed work, the absence record remains. When the student is participating in or attending an athletic event, the local school board (not school council) attendance policy controls whether it is counted as an excused or unexcused absence. For example, the local board policy might choose to record an excused absence for those students participating on a high school athletic team that is playing in a state championship and not record an excused absence for attendance by a nonparticipant. It is also possible that the Board policy is to allow an excused absence for attendance by nonparticipants with verification. The impact of excused versus unexcused absence is that with an excused absence the student may have the ability to make up the missed school work, but has no such right with an unexcused absence. If the school’s team is involved in a very popular event, such as the state high school basketball tournament, and a significant portion of the student body will be attending the tournament and thus missing school, the local board has discretion as to whether to close school that day(s) in anticipation of low school attendance, and amend the school calendar to make up the instructional time. If further clarification is needed relative to local policies which may be in place, please have the appropriate district personnel contact the Kentucky Department of Education.
