X needs to be more efficient on offense to be competitive. They were not last week. However, it is normal for considerable improvement to be made from a first game to a second game. We shall see if that happens. Hopefully it does. I am not ready to make a judgment on the Tigers with the new regime until a larger body of work is accumulated. I think overall the new coaches have the program headed in the right direction, but time will tell. I predict that the crowd will be electric Friday night and the Rage Cage will be raucous.

Tough to win against any opponent with 2 pick-6's. Turnovers in early-season games make them highly unpredictable. The Tigers special teams were good for and early-season game. X needs to play cleaner football on offense to be competitive. They don't need to score 35 every game with the quality defense they have. But they do need to be able to move the ball, not make costly mistakes, and score in the red zone. I was expecting more from the running game. To be a good team, you have to be able to run it some when everyone in the stadium knows you are going to run it. Either the Tigers were unable to do so, or they did not stick with the run enough. Time will tell. On another note, I thought the Owensboro YouTube broadcast was excellent. While the announcers were definitely "homers," they were fun to listen to and did a good job. Good job by Owensboro to grit out a win while losing their QB.

I would think that the X defense will do a good job of shutting Owensboro down. The thing that is hard to predict for any team in an early-season game is special teams mistakes and turnovers. Winning these two hidden facets of the game often lead to early-season wins. They are also the biggest wild cards in early season games. Having said all of that, I think X wins barring any costly turnovers or glaring special teams mistakes.

Great job, Chief, of being proactive and setting up a reasonable set of expectations. While some toxic parents get quite a bit of attention, I believe most parents just want their kid to have a quality experience on a team. Most of them want to do the right thing. Many of them simply do not know what the proper way to conduct themselves around coaches in fact is. Clear communication like Chief shared with us certainly helps.

Hopefully they get the running game fixed regardless of who becomes the QB.

2008 St. X. Had a bad first quarter against a good Trinity team in the semifinals after having beaten them soundly in the regular season. Had highest scoring offense in school history and defense allowed less than 10 points per game.

Hopefully they can get a coach on board soon to get the numbers such that that can play this season. Before schools run off a successful coach (like the one prior to Yeast), maybe they need to consider that the grass is not always greener.

So you are saying that a 1-2 game per year upgrade to the schedule would not help come playoff time? I am not saying that they should schedule "murderer's row." But 1 or 2 games per year against tougher competition should help them. People don't remember how a team did in the regular season. They remember how well a team did in the playoffs. Who cares if they lose a non-district game in the regular season if it prepares them to perform better in the playoffs. And in my original post, I also alluded to the fact the SW does a good job. They transitioned well to 6A. A small tweak to their future scheduling would, in my opinion, help them in the long run.

South Warren and Coach Smith have done a nice job. They need to upgrade their schedule if they want to compete for championships. I am not saying they should go crazy with it, but 1-2 games against tougher competition would help them. I think they should schedule either X or T (one of them) every year. If you have to beat them to win a title, then you should play them during the season to see what it takes.

That is quite the meat grinder of a schedule for a program trying to get back on decent footing.

Are we going to penalize public schools because they swept the boys and girls basketball tournaments? Are we going to specifically penalize GRC for doing so? Of course not. Nor should we. The whole argument for having a multiplier for private schools is ridiculous as long as there is open enrollment for public schools.

I agree, but most of the camps now are one-day evaluation camps. The instructional camps are largely a thing of the past. The goal of current camps seems to be to get a select few potential recruits on campus to evaluate them and to make money from the rest.

This is wise scheduling in order for the Ads to continue to build some momentum from last season in order to rebuild their program.

One good off-season topic might be how the two of you, and maybe even some other coaches, handle summer schedule, particularly from the time school is out until school starts the next year. Do you go hard in June? Do you make June a lower workload and crank it up July 10? Weightroom, running program, football skill development, etc.

I would think so, but it is not in the same retirement system as Kentucky public schools. So I would think it would be somewhat of a challenge in that regard.
