McCracken County Mustangs Record: 28-6 Coach: Burlin Brower Region 1, District 2. McCracken County started the year as the 5th ranked team in Region 1. They lost quite a bit from the previous year and would really need the players that were coming back to step up and lead. Region 1 was a very tough region at the top this year. Mayfield, Graves County, Paducah Tilghman, and McCracken County were all ranked in the BGP Top 20 at some point this season. The Mustangs started out hot winning 10 of the first 11 games, with the only loss coming to Mayfield. They struggled over the Holidays only going 2-4. But one of those wins was a dominating performance against Christian County. One of the losses was to Sweet 16 team Apollo 58-54. After the Apollo loss the Mustangs went on a tear, winning 12 games in a row before falling to Hopkinsville in a tight game. During that win streak McCracken started to show their strength as they defeated Paducah Tilghman twice, Graves County, Marshall County, and Madisonville. After defeating Paducah Tilghman for a third time in the 2nd District title game, McCracken went on to face Murray, Mayfield, and Graves County to win the Region 2 Championship. They did this by limiting their opponents to an average of 36 points per game. In fact, in 2018 only two teams have scored more than 60 points, and both of those teams still lost to the Mustangs. While most teams in the tournament are known for their offense or particular players, McCracken isn’t known for either. There is not a name on their roster that sticks out as “amazing” or “must watch.” However, their defense is suffocating and very well disciplined. Some examples, Christian County averaged almost 80 ppg when they faced McCracken, they scored 44. Paducah Tilghman averages over 70 ppg, they scored 55, 42, and 57. Mayfield who is without a doubt a top 20 team in the state, scored 38. This team plays Very Good Defense. Teams better be ready. They will make you play their game. Offensively, the Mustangs are the lowest scoring team in the tournament. They only average 60 points per game. Their offense is led by a trio of young men. Nathan Stonecipher (14.9 ppg), Cameron Cartwright (14.5 ppg), and Jackson Sivills (13.1 ppg). They also have a few other role players who can score if needed. This team relies on the outside shot, shooting 47.5%, because they aren’t overally big inside. They have made 180 three pointers (5.3 per game) this year. If they get hot from the arc, they are a very tough team to beat due to their defense. Inside, Stonecipher and Sivills both average 7 rebounds per game, so they don’t give up a lot of second chance shots, which many teams do rely on. McCracken County is one of those teams that it is easy to overlook because their offensive stats do not scream anything other than average at best. When you combine that with one of the best defenses in the state things change. While they may not have the pedigree or players other teams in the Sweet 16 have, this team has heart and grit, don’t ever count them out. University Heights Blazers Record: 23-7 Coach: Grant Shouse Region 2, District 8. UHA started the year as the third ranked team in Region 2, and district 8. They were considered a dangerous offensive team that couldn’t play defense. That mindset continued into the beginning of the season when Paducah Tilghman put up 88 points on them and Bryan Station put up 82 points. However following the Holiday tournaments, the Blazers seem to find some defense and things began to turn around, but the toughest parts of their schedule still lied ahead. Late January brought about the All “A” Classic and the Blazers unfortunately drew Lexington Christian in the first round. LCA was ranked in the BGP top 20 and showed why as they dominated the Blazers 68-47. UHA then had to turn around and play a gauntlet of Christian County 2x, Bowling Green, and a much improved Hopkinsville. While they lost two close games to Christian County, they defeated both Bowling Green and Hopkinsville. They wouldn’t lose another game the rest of the year. UHA ran through the 8th district tournament, one of the toughest in the state, and came out on top after defeating Hopkinsville and Christian County. Many thought they couldn’t beat Christian County again if they faced them in the Region 2 finals. With Coach Cal from UK in the stand, the Blazers found themselves playing disciplined basketball on their way to a 78-70 over Detorrian Ware and Christian County, earning their first trip to Rupp in a decade. The Blazers are led by one of the best players in Kentucky, KyKy Tandy. Tandy (junior) is an elite talent who can completely change the game. He is not just a pure scorer either. He is an excellent ball handler who is unselfish and gets his teammates the ball very well. Tandy has drawn interest from the University of Kentucky and already has offers from Oklahoma, Florida, and Tennessee to name a few. He averaged 30.5 points a game while shooting 61% from the field including almost 48% from 3 point range (89 for 187). He also involves himself around the basket pulling down 5 rebounds per game even with his 6’1” frame. If there is a player you will want to see at the tournament, Tandy is it. UHA isn’t just KyKy Tandy. They have some good components to compliment his skill set. Taquan Hollowell has been the presence down low and he has improved all season. He finished the season averaging 7 rebounds per game and almost 12 points per game. Drew McGowan averages a quiet 11.3 points per game and KJ Crump is averaging almost 9 points per game. One mistake that teams tend to make when playing UHA is they focus on Tandy, which they have too, and forget there is other talent on the team. UHA is not a one man show, they have some very good talent in their starting 5. Their weakness come from their bench. After their starting 5 they get think very fast, so if they get in foul trouble, things can get out of hand quickly. UHA in my mind is one of the most improved teams in the state. They have finally figured out how to play defense, which has been their undoing in the past. UHA is also more than Tandy as mentioned above. However, UHA hasn't been to Rupp in quite some time and while Tandy may not be affected, the others probably will be. I will pick UHA if they get over jitters quickly, otherwise Camels by 12.

Tandy is a beast and Ware is probably the most underrated player in the state. It was a pleasure to watch these two young men battle.

Mayfield should be in the top 20 that is for sure. #13 does seem a little high, maybe 15 to 17 would be more accurate. However, they are very good. They went undefeated in Region 1 which had 3 other teams ranked in the top 20 at some point this year.

Districts are here and everyone will be watching what takes place in District 8 between University Heights and Hopkinsville. The winner of this game advances to the District title game against likely winner Christian County. The loser will be out. UHA has won 2 games against Hopkinsville this season, but the Tigers are at full strength and are playing well. Look for Madisonville and Henderson County to pull an upset when region tournament starts. 1. Christian County – Coach Kerry Stovall 2017-18 record: 19-6 Preseason Rank:2 The Colonels finished their season defeating defending state champs Bowling Green. They ended the year on a 10 game winning streak and are the top seed in the loaded District 8. They will play Ft. Campbell which they will handle without problems. D. Ware will then lead his team against the winner of Hoptown/UHA game. Then its on to regions where the final may be the same game as the district final. 2. University Heights Academy – Coach Grant Shouse 2017-18 record: 18-7 Preseason Rank: 3 The Blazers finished their season on a 4 game winning streak. KyKy Tandy will have to be on top of his game again in what is one of the 1st round district games in the State when they play Hopkinsville. The Blazers have defeated Hoptown twice this year, but 3 times will be very difficult. They will need all their guns blazing to bring down the tigers.. 3. Hopkinsville – Coach Tim Haworth 2017-18 record: 13-13 Preseason Rank: 1 Hopkinsville has had a turbulent season to say the least. They avoided their first losing season since 2005 season by defeating Owensboro and McCracken County who were both ranked in the top 20 in the BGP poll. They have a tough task ahead of them in the elimination game against UHA. Winner moves on, loser goes home. Hopkinsville has played in the region tournament every year except Haworth’s first season. 4. Madisonville North Hopkins – Coach Matt Beshear 2017-18 record: 19-9 Preseason Rank: 4 Madisonville showed they have the talent to compete with the top teams in Region 2 this year. They will only improve as they are a young team. They should have no problem making the region tournament where they can pull an upset against one of the district 8 teams. They ended the season with a win against Ohio County. They will play Dawson Springs in the first round of District 7 playoff. 5. Henderson County – Coach Tyler Smithhart 2017-18 record: 13-13 Preseason Rank: 5 Henderson County had a touch ending to a good season. After losing 3 starters before the beginning of the year, the Colonels have had their moments. However they lost their last 3 games and it shows how much growth they will still need to make to truly compete with the top 4 teams. However, don’t forget they took Christian County to double overtime before falling. . 6. Webster County – Coach Jon Newton 2017-18 record: 17-10 Preseason Rank: 6 Webster has been the up and down team in region 2 this year. This week was an up week with the Trojans winner 4 of their last 5 games. Their only loss was to University Heights in a pretty close game. They have a very tough game against Union County in the 6th District opening round. They should win, but its not a guarantee as they split the season series. 7. Hopkins County Central – Coach Lee James 2017-18 record: 15-12 Preseason Rank: 11 Hopkins County was one of the biggest movers this season in region 2. They finished the year winning their last two games against Lyon County and Crittenden County. They will play Caldwell County in the opening round of the 7th district. They lost to Caldwell two weeks ago, so it will be a tough matchup for the Storm. 8. Livingston Central – Coach Bill McNamara 2017-18 record: 17-13 Preseason Rank: 7 The Cardinals have looked really good at times this year, and then others they have looked lost. It has been the latter lately as LC lost 4 of their last 5 games including games to Caldwell County. They play Crittenden County in the first round of the 5th district. 9. Union County – Coach Shane Smith 2017-18 record: 13-14 Preseason Rank: 12 Union was another team that rose in the standings throughout the year. Big man Logan Thomas was difficult to stop and was the mainstay for this team. They finished the year winning 4 of 5 including their first round matchup in the 6th district tournament, Webster County 10. Caldwell County – Coach Daniel Kukahiko 2017-18 record: 14-13 Preseason Rank: 10 Caldwell had a great run at the end of the year winning 5 of their last 6 games. They finished the year with a solid win against Livingston Central. Derrin Boyd has been a bright spot averaging almost 23.6 ppg. Caldwell will play Hopkins County Central in district play next. 11. Trigg County – Coach Payton Croft 2017-18 record: 11-13 Preseason Rank: 8 Trigg County found themselves on a terrible losing streak to end the season. The Wildcats lost 6 games to end the season including to Ft. Campbell. They play Lyon County in districts. 12. Lyon County – Coach Jeff Embrey 2017-18 record: 7-17 Preseason Rank: 13 Lyon lost to Hopkins County Central in a close game and defeated St. Mary. They will play Trigg County in the district. 13. Fort Campbell – Coach Stacey Harrell 2017-18 record: 6-18 Preseason Rank: 15 The Falcons won their final two games of the season. Bad News, they get to play Christian County in district opener. 14. Crittenden County – Coach Denis Hodge 2017-18 record: 5-18 Preseason Rank: 14 The Rockets ended the year on a 7 game losing streak including a 59-45 defeat to Fort Campbell. This has dropped them to 14th for the season. They have a daunting task of playing Livingston Central in the first round of district. 15. Dawson Springs – Coach Chad Burgett 2017-18 record: 10-19 Preseason Rank: 9 The Panthers dropped farther than anyone else from the preseason rankings. They just had problems competing on a regular basis this year. Players to Watch De’Torrion Ware, Christian County, (Guard), Senior Ware won the 2018 Region 2 Player of the Year. He is one of the most exciting players to watch in all of Kentucky. He averages 31.3 ppg and 6.9 rpg. His season high was 51 points against Hopkinsville. He is a real candidate for Mr. Basketball in Kentucky and has multiple offers from D1 schools. Dekeyvan (Kyky) Tandy, University Heights, (Guard), Junior. KyKy Tandy is without a doubt one of the best offensive players in the state. He already has offers from many major D1 programs (Tennessee, Florida, Oklahoma) although he has not committed. He averaged 30.2 ppg this year and hit 58 threes. He also pulled down 4.2 rebounds per game. He is one of the front runners for Mr. Basketball next year. Jalen Johnson, Hopkinsville (Guard), Senior Jalen had a tough year this year after suffering a knee injury prior to the season starting. Initially Johnson transferred to the prep school, but came back before the season started. He still is not healthy, but even at 70%, he is one of the best guards in the region. He is averaging 17.5 ppg and 5.0 rpg this season. Stephen (Shorty) Cager, Hopkinsville, (Guard), Senior Cager is one of the smallest (5’8”), but quickest guards in Kentucky. After serving a suspension for much of the year, Cager played in the last 10 games. He is averaging 22.4 ppg and has been the leader and spark for the Tigers. He is a fun player to watch. Ksuan, Casey, Madinsonville North-Hopkins, (Forward), Sophomore Casey has provided a much needed lift for the Maroons. Many thought they were a year away from competing, but because he stepped up, they were very competitive this season. He averaged 16.3 ppg and 9.1 rpg over the season. He may be the best 10th grader in region 2. Derrin Boyd, Caldwell County, (Guard), Junior Boyd turned into one of the best scorers in Region 2 averaging almost 24 ppg and 8.5 rpg. Unfortunately he has to go up against Ware, Tandy, Johnson, and Cager to get noticed. So he doesn’t get much. Elex Dunford, Union County (Guard), Junior, Dunford became a great complement to Union’s big man Thomas. Dunford averaged 16.2 ppg and could hit from the outside at anytime (43 threes). He also contributed 4.5 rpg for the Braves Chatman Ellis, Webster County, (Guard), Senior Chatman has quick feet and loves to drive in the lane. He is very confident and has a good first step. He is averaging 20.7 ppg this year and whatever he goes, so goes Webster County. Logan Thomas, Union County, (Center), Senior Thomas averaged a double/double again his senior year. He is a very underrated player who is averaging 18.5 ppg and 11.3 rpg. He is a fun player to watch, especially when he dominates down low. Cody Cunningham, Madisonville North-Hopkins (Guard), Junior Cody has blossomed into the player the Maroons were hoping. He averaged 13 points per game while hitting 48 threes this season. He has developed into a true leader for MNH. BluegrassPreps.com 1st Region Boys Basketball Review Week 10 There are 4 legit teams that can win Region 1 and make a splash at Rupp. 2 of those teams have separated themselves from the field, Mayfield and McCracken County. Paducah Tilghman and Graves both have the talent to win the region tournament but need to improve play in order to do so. Fulton County has been playing great basketball lately and moved up to number 6 in the rankings. 1. Mayfield – Coach Chris Guhy BGP #15 2017-18 record: 25-5 Preseason Rank: 2 Mayfield won both their games this week finishing off a great regular season. The Cardinals started off the year ranked 2 and moved up to the top spot. Carson and Connor Guthrie have had fantastic junior years as well as Desean Jones. All three are averaging more than 13 ppg and cause all kinds of problems for teams. No teams in Region 1 were able to solve them, however their game against Paducah Tilghman was cancelled. Mayfield is the defending Region 1 champions and with the way they have been playing (17 wins in last 18 games), they have a great chance of repeating. 2. McCracken County – Coach Burlin Brower 2017-18 record: 23-6 Preseason Rank: 6 The Mustangs lost their final game to Hopkinsville by 3 points. They missed a shot as time ran out, hoping to tie. McCracken didn’t play well in this game. The Mustangs live and die by the outside shot, when they are on, they are a very difficult team to beat. McCracken started this season ranked 6 because they lost so much last year. They had guys step up (Sivills) and play big this year and Cartwright and Stonecipher improved greatly over last year. They have become the real leaders of this team. The Mustangs have a great chance to win this region. 3. Paducah Tilghman – Coach Roderick Thomas 2017-18 record:18-8 Preseason Rank: 1 Paducah Tilghman is the most talented team on paper in Region 1, however, they have not played like the top team over the past month. They have lost 4 of their last 7 games including twice to McCracken County. PT have had these same problems over the past few seasons, but after doing so well throughout the year, it had seemed that was behind them. However since the Superman Classic, they have not been the same team we have seen all year. The Tornado will need to find their game again. Reed, Rodriguez, and Workman need to step up and lead this team to play like they are capable or they will again be watching someone else go to Rupp. 4. Graves County – Coach Joshua Frick 2017-18 record: 22-8 Preseason Rank: 3 Graves County is the last of the top tier teams that have a chance to win Region 1. They finished their season by defeating Carlisle Co and Marshall Co. They are still without their leading scorer Savage, but the Eagles have plenty of other weapons in Mathis, Naranjo, Grant, and Young. Graves in the only team in Region 1 who has 5 players averaging 10+ ppg. While not having Savage has hurt, the Eagles have enough talent to win the Region. 5. Marshall County – Terry Birdsong 2017-18 record: 17-11 Preseason Rank: 4 Marshall County is the final team that may have a realistic chance to win the region. They would be a long shot, but considering they are able to keep the score close against the region’s other top teams, they can pull some upsets. They only lost to McCracken by 4, Mayfield 7, and Graves by 3. While Marshall does have balanced scoring, nobody on the team is averaging more than 10 ppg. 6. Fulton County – Coach Jamie Madding 2017-18 record: 16-11 Preseason Rank: The Pilots climbed higher in the rankings than any other team. This was solidified in their loss to Mayfield which they held their own before bowing out and losing by 15. They then blew out Ballard Memorial to end the season. Fulton County is led by Andreous Smith who averages almost 20 ppg and Caleb Kimble and Brandon Walker who both averages almost 14 ppg. This is a team that could pull some kind of upset if the cards fall correctly. 7 Carlisle County – Coach Brian O’Neil 2017-18 record: 13-15 Preseason Rank: 5 The Comets had the largest drop for the top teams in region 1. They were considered the top of the middle tier teams, but it didn’t seem to work that way. While McCracken County got in a groove, Carlisle just couldn’t find one. Their longest winning streak was 3 games, and that was in December. They will have their hands full in the first round of the districts as they will play Hickman County who they only beat by 4 at home. 8. Murray – Coach Dior Curtis 2017-18 record: 13-16 Preseason Rank: 8 Murray is another team that could have had a little better record, but struggled in some puzzling games this season. They finished the year where they started in 8 position, although they had moved up and down throughout the season. They will play Calloway county in the first round of district. They are 1-1 against them this year. 9. Calloway County – Coach Brad Cleaver 2016-17 record: 11-16 Preseason Rank: 9 Calloway ended their season with a close win against Ballard Memorial. Taking both games for the year. They will play Murray in the District. 10. Ballard Memorial – Coach Marla Cooper 2017-18 record: 12-15 Preseason Rank: 12 Ballard started the year well, but ended it struggling for wins. The Bombers lost 9 of their last 12 games after reaching the finals in the All A Classic for region 1. 11. Hickman County – Coach Jimmy Long 2017-18 record: 10-19 Preseason Rank: 7 Hickman was one of those teams who seemed would have had a better year than they did. There were some good ups and some really bad downs as well. They play Carlisle County to open 1st District play. 12. St. Mary – Coach Greg Overstreet 2017-18 record: 9-19 Preseason Rank: 13 St. Mary lost to Lyon County to end the season. They will play Paducah Tilghman in the 2nd District tournament. 13. Community Christian Paducah – Coach Daniel Durrett / Rhet McMullen 2017-18 record: 2-25 Preseason Rank: 14 It took 63 games for the Warriors to get a win. They it only took them 3 more to get their 2nd win. They are not the last ranked team in region 1 for the first time in 2 years. 14. Fulton City – Coach Jon Dillard 2017-18 record: 1-23 Preseason Rank: 13 The Bulldogs won their first game of the year and that ended up being the only game they won. Top Players to Watch in Region 1 Jerome Reed, Paducah Tilghman (Center/Forward) Senior Arguably the most talented player in Region 1, Reed averaged 18 ppg and 5.7 rpg in his senior year. He also received the 2018 Region 1 Player of the Year Award. Exciting to watch and could play at the next year. Connor Guthrie, Mayfield (Guard) – Junior Conner is probably the best shooter in the region and should be considered one of the best in the state. He lives for the outside shot. He averaged 16.8 ppg and hit 89 threes this season. He also averaged 5.8 boards a game throughout the year. Is a very good compliment to his brother…see next. Carson Guthrie, Mayfield (Guard/Forward) - Junior Carson averaged 14.6 points a game but really shined down low where he averaged 9.1 rpg. He compliments his brother’s game and that is what makes the two of them so dangerous. Nathan Stonecipher (Forward) Senior Stonecipher played the role of big man for McCracken averaging 14.5 ppg and 7.8 rpg. He did attempt 10 threes, but missed them all. Rodriguez Thomas , Paducah Tilghman (Guard) Junior Thomas averaged 13 points per game this season and hit 67 threes. He has a pretty good outside shot, but shoots better from a set position than he does off the dribble. He knows his way around the basket and moves well away from the ball to get open. Dalton Jewel, Hickman County (Center/Forward) Senior Dalton Jewel really flexed his muscles at time this year and led the Region in scoring with 24.5 ppg. He averaged more points this year than last, however his rebounds per game decreased to 7.4 per game. Trey Wilson, Carlisle County (Guard) Senior Wilson is a scrappy player who knows his way around the floor averaged 15.1 ppg for the Comets. He was the leader of the team and will be missed next year. Jordan Noranjo, Graves County (Guard) Junior Noranjo has really blossomed into a very good player this year. He led the Eagles in scoring at 13.4 ppg and had 5.2 rpg. He has done a great job leading the team without big man Vogt this year. Cameron, Cartwright (Guard) Senior Cartwright became a real factor in leading McCracken to the top of the rankings this year. He averaged 15.1 ppg and hit 62 threes. Andreous Smith, Fulton County. (Guard/Forward) Senior Smith averaged 5 ppg more this year than last at 19.2 ppg. He is a big reason for Fulton County’s surge this year. He also led the team in rpg at 7.9. I would not say 6 or 7 three pointers are a ton. However, Hoptown shot terrible from the free throw line (something like 40%). McCracken is a good team, but they really rely on shots from the outside. If they are not falling, they struggle.
