Yea I included that in last weeks because I got to Region 2's review late.

That is a tough schedule to start the year.

Not a whole lot of movement this week in the rankings. Almost all teams won the games they were supposed to so no real upsets took place although some of the games were definitely closer than predicted. We are getting ready to enter into the Holiday Tournaments. Some teams will play some tough schedules, but not a whole lot should change between now and when district play gets into action in early January. 1. Christian County – Coach Kerry Stovall *BGP #19 2017-18 record: 5-1 Week’s Record: 2-0 Last Weeks Rank: 1 Detorrion Ware continued his tear this week scoring 32 against Mayfield and 39 against Russellville. County dominated Russellville to a score of 111-81 while winning a close game against Mayfield 81-74. It took 24 points from Jordan Johnson in order for the Colonels to get by the Cardinals. Good news that they got some quality offense from someone other than Ware. Christian County continues to prove they deserve to be on top in Region 1 despite the outlier loss to Owensboro. They will have to continue to get scoring from other people in order to stay there for the entire season. The will play in the Baptist Health & Sports Rehab Holiday Classic this week. 2. University Heights Academy – Coach Grant Shouse 2017-18 record: 4-1 Week’s Record: 2-0 Last Weeks Rank: 2 The Blazers had 2 games this week in the Toyota of Hopkinsville Classic. UHA defeated West Creek, TN 79-69 and then Hopkins County 100-67. Tandy had 29 points against Hopkins leading 10 different scorers for the Blazers. He also led the Blazers in the win over West Creek. UHA will play in the Paducah Tilghman Christmas Tournaments this week. First games against Seneca and then Paducah Tilghman. Should be a good game. 3. Hopkinsville – Coach Tim Haworth 2017-18 record: 3-3 Week’s Record: 1-1 Last Weeks Rank: 3 More problems for the Tigers. They are already without their 3 top players in Johnson, Cager, and Toliver. They just lost their 4th top player to injury. James Nicholas who looked like he was having a breakout season averaging 13ppg went out with an injury against Russellville and did not return to the game. No word on the seriousness of the injury at this time, but if it is anything significant, then the nightmare season for the Tigers continues. The Tigers fared much better against Bowling Green this time around only losing 78-71 instead of the blowout earlier in the season. Nicholas scored 21 to lead HHS and Alijah Watts added 20. They defeated Russellville 74-62. Jacarius Burks scored 20 for the Tigers. If there is a silver lining to this season so far is IF the Tigers get everyone back, they will be a very tough out because a lot of bench players are getting some quality play time and showing they can compete. Until then, they are the 3rd best team in District 8 and Region 2. 4. Webster County – Coach Jon Newton 2017-18 record: 4-1 Week’s Record: 2-0 Last Weeks Rank: 4 Webster continued to win and now hold the second best record in Region 2. They squeaked by Caldwell County 64-61 behind 29 points from Ellis Chatman. They had an easier time against Dawson Springs defeating them 79-50. Chatman also led the Trojans with 25 points in this game. Webster could find themselves in some very tough games this week hosting Todd County Central and Christian County in the Baptist Health & Sports Rehab Holiday Classic. 5. Madinsonville North Hopkins – Coach Matt Beshear 2017-18 record: 7-2 Week’s Record: 3-0 Last Weeks Rank: 5 Another busy week for the Maroons this past week. This week they go 3-0, getting all 3 wins fairly easily. They beat Hopkins Central, Trigg County, and McLean County. Cade Cunningham continues to pace the Maroons so far. Next up will be the Aleris Christmas Tournament in Hancock County. 6. Henderson County – Coach Tyler Smithhart 2017-18 record: 4-3 Week’s Record: 2-0 Last Weeks Rank: 6 Henderson got back to winning ways defeating two teams from Indiana. Isaac Anglin and Kale Gaither led the Colonels in scoring and continue to work at improving involving others on an inexperienced team. Henderson will play in the Traditional Bank Holiday Classic, but first will go to Paducah Tilghman this weekend. 7. Hopkins County Central – Coach Lee James 2017-18 record: 2-5 Week’s Record: 0-1 Last Weeks Rank: 7 The Storm’s losing streak has extended to 5 games after getting blown out and allowing UHA to score 100 points. HCC is looking to change their ways in a matchup against Union County, Caverna, and Dawson Springs at Union County’s Holiday Tournament. 8. Union County – Coach Shane Smith 2017-18 record: 4-3 Week’s Record: 1-1 Last Weeks Rank: 8 Last week’s biggest mover had a rough game against Evangelical Christian in Tn losing 76-65. They did however defeat Lyon County 64-58. All eyes remain on Logan Thomas and Elex Dunford, two of the higher scorers in Region 2. Union has big games against Hopkins Central, Dawson Springs, and Caverna this week in their Holiday Tournament. 9. Livingston Central – Coach Bill McNamara 2017-18 record: 5-4 Week’s Record: 2-0 Last Weeks Rank: 9 Since the Cardinals started the season on a 4 game losing streak, they have won their last 5. They defeated Crittenden County 79-55 and had a surprising blowout of Hickman County 85-36. They will have a tough game against Webster this week and then play in Graves County Eagle Holiday Classic. 10. Dawson Springs – Coach Chad Burgett 2017-18 record: 2-5 Week’s Record: 0-2 Last Weeks Rank: 10 Dawson Springs lost 2 games this week. First against St. Mary and second against Webster County. The Panthers will play in the Union County Holiday Tournament hoping to minimize their losing streak and get back into the win column. 11. Caldwell County – Coach Daniel Kukahiko 2017-18 record: 2-4 Week’s Record: 0-2 Last Weeks Rank: 11 Caldwell County had two very good games this week, unfortunately, they both ended in a loss. They had a great game against Webster county losing a nail biter 64-61. Derrin Boyd led the Tigers with 31 points in the loss. Caldwell then loss another close one to Calloway County 58-52, this time being led by Jameer Riley with 18 points. The Tigers will play Carlisle County before playing in the BTN/WLBQ Christmas Classic in Butler County. 12. Fort Campbell – Coach Stacey Harrell 2017-18 record: 2-4 Week’s Record: 2-1 Last Weeks Rank: 12 Falcons did not play this week, nor will they play again until January 5th against Hopkinsville. 13. Trigg County – Coach Payton Croft 2017-18 record: 3-3 Week’s Record: 1-1 Last Weeks Rank: 13 Trigg continues to struggle this year, barely getting by Lyon County and being soundly beaten at Madisonville. Hopefully Trigg will get back on track this week as they host the KME Classic. 14. Lyon County – Coach Jeff Embrey 2017-18 record: 1-7 Week’s Record: 0-2 Last Weeks Rank: 14 Lyon lost two more games this week against Union and Carlisle. However both games were very close and they Lyons could have won those games and pulled the upset. Some of those wins will come if they keep playing hard and working as a team. They will play McCracken this week. 15. Crittenden County – Coach Denis Hodge 2017-18 record: 1-6 Week’s Record: 1-1 Last Weeks Rank: 15 The Rockets got their 1st win of the year against winless Christian Fellowship. They also against Livingston Central. They will play Ballard Memorial before the break. Player of the Week Derin Boyd, Caldwell County, scored 31 points and pulled down 9 rebounds in a losing effort to Webster County. Boyd is averaging just over 20 ppg and 9 rpg on the year.

It has been a long time since Region 2 has been this volatile and unpredictable. The top 3 teams are still from District 8, but none of the 3 have shown they are head and heels better than anyone else, and none are top 25 teams in the state, despite the current BGP rankings (those will change). Hopkinsville have lost their top 3 players, otherwise it would be a different story. Christian County has a superstar in D.Ware, but if he is shut down, they will probably lose. UHA is much of the same story, huge superstar in KyKy Tandy, but if he is contained, what do they have. The surprise right now maybe Webster County. Their game on Dec 22 will be a telltale if they have the ability to crack the top 3. 1. Christian County – Coach Kerry Stovall *BGP #12 2017-18 record: 3-1 Week’s Record: 2-1 Last Weeks Rank: 1 Christian County started out this year with some very good wins against Paducah Tilghman, Madisonville, and Doss. Detorrion Ware has been absolutely unstoppable so far. He averaged 35 ppg in those 3 wins. He is the reason the Colonels are ranked where they are in the BGP rankings and number 1 in region 2. However, the question has been what happens if a team can contain Ware. Owensboro did just that. They got out to a 21-0 lead in the first. Things continued to go down from there and the Colonels found themselves playing a game with a running clock on them. The final score was 82-43, the worst beating CC has taken in recent memory. It also causes all kinds of problems with if they deserve to be in the place they are. For now, it will go down as a outlier game and Christian County will stay number 1 in the district. They play Russellville and Mayfield this week. The Mayfield game should be a great game between top teams in their respective regions. 2. University Heights Academy – Coach Grant Shouse 2017-18 record: 2-1 Week’s Record: 1-0 Last Weeks Rank: 4 The Blazers had a chance to prove they belong in the discussion as a team that could go to Rupp from region 2, and they capitalized on it. The game against Hopkinsville was the first game they had in 10 days, and Kyky Tandy was phenomenal pouring in 42 points in front of multiple D-1 college scouts and coaches. KJ Crump add 12 and Kwun Dorsey add 11. The Blazers are pretty much a 1 man show, like Christian County, but have some decent supporting players in McGowan and Hollowell. They will play West Creek from Clarksville, Tn and Hopkins County Central. Both should be wins. 3. Hopkinsville – Coach Tim Haworth 2017-18 record: 2-2 Week’s Record: 1-1 Last Weeks Rank: 2 The Tigers season just seems to get worse and worse. Unconfirmed reports state that senior POY candidate Jalen Johnson is out for the season with a severe knee injury. Add to that Tefrell Toliver is out and the suspension of Stephen Cager and the Tigers have gone from state champion contender to the 3rd best team in District 8. The Tigers still have a lot of talent, but no experience. That was evident in the loss to UHA 88-81. The Tigers had no answer for Kyky Tandy and made some very costly mental mistakes. Good news is James Nicholas played the best game of his career with 25 pts and 7 boards. Jacarious Burks added 19. Things don’t get easier for the Tigers as they have a rematch with Bowling Green before hosting Russellville. 4. Webster County – Coach Jon Newton 2017-18 record: 4-1 Week’s Record: 2-0 Last Weeks Rank: 5 Webster looked pretty good in their two wins this week increasing their total to 4 on the year, their only loss coming to Apollo. The big game was the win against Madisonville in a nail biter 51-50. Chatman Ellis paced the Trojans with 22 points while Malachi Douglas added 12. This puts Webster at the top of the second tier of teams in region 2 and the number 4 spot. Webster will play Caldwell County and Dawson Springs this week. Expect them to continue their winning ways. 5. Madinsonville North Hopkins – Coach Matt Beshear 2017-18 record: 5-2 Week’s Record: 3-2 Last Weeks Rank: 3 Busy week for the Maroons. They opened the week with a loss to Christian County. The game was closer than the final score. They defeated Butler County and Dawson Springs before dropping another region 2 game to Webster County. They returned to the win column getting their first region 2 win against Hopkins County Central. The Maroons are getting some balanced scoring this season with Ksuan Casey leading the way averaging 16.5 ppg/8.2 rpg and Cade Cunningham adding 15 ppg and Kenny White 14 ppg. Madisonville has a good team, but are probably one year away from a real chance of taking down District 8. They play Trigg and McClean County next and should win both of those games. 6. Henderson County – Coach Tyler Smithhart 2017-18 record: 3-3 Week’s Record: 2-1 Last Weeks Rank: 6 Henderson did not play any in state teams this week, but they did play 3 games winning two of those games. While nobody has really taken control as the leader of the team, the group as a whole has played very well together and will continue to improve with more game experience. The Colonels have 6 players averaging 7ppg or more. They are led by Kale Gaither who is scoring 12 ppg. Henderson will play one more out of state team to finish out this week. 7. Hopkins County Central – Coach Lee James 2017-18 record: 2-4 Week’s Record: 0-4 Last Weeks Rank: 7 After starting the season 2-0, things have gone the opposite direction for the Storm. HCC were handed losses to Webster Co, Muhlenberg Co, Graves Co, and Madisonville. Tyler Mann is leading the Storm with 14 ppg and Blasin Moore and getting 12.2 ppg. HCC will try and pull a big upset on Saturday against UHA. 8. Union County – Coach Shane Smith 2017-18 record: 3-2 Week’s Record: 1-2 Last Weeks Rank: 12 After starting the season 3-0, and Braves were brought back to earth. They took losses to Trinity (Whitesville) and Murray. While Union looks to be a team that has improved from last year, it still has some ground to make up on teams above them. We really won’t be able to tell where they stand until after the break when they are able to play some other region 2 teams. For now, Logan Thomas (20 ppg/11 rpg) and Elex Dunford (19 ppg) are eating up opponents. If a couple other guys can get involved, they can make a big move. 9. Livingston Central – Coach Bill McNamara 2017-18 record: 3-4 Week’s Record: 3-0 Last Weeks Rank: 10 The Cardinals had a dreadful start to the year losing their first 4 games. They quickly turned it around and have won their last 3 against Lyon County, Trigg Co, and St. Mary. Livingston is led by Cameron Dean and Seth Hosick who are both getting 14 ppg. Livingston can extend their winning streak this weekend as they play Crittenden County and Hickman County. 10. Dawson Springs – Coach Chad Burgett 2017-18 record: 2-4 Week’s Record: 1-3 Last Weeks Rank: 9 Dawson Springs defeated Lyon County in the mist of losing their other 3 games they played again Union Co, Madisonville, and St. Mary. They will play Webster Co this weekend. The Panthers are led by Austin Clark who is averaging 17 ppg. 11. Caldwell County – Coach Daniel Kukahiko 2017-18 record: 2-2 Week’s Record: 2-2 Last Weeks Rank: 11 Caldwell County rebounded from their loss to Hopkinsville by defeating Crittenden County. But they couldn’t outscore Mayfield losing 66-50. Derrin Boyd continues to impress averaging 20 ppg on the year. He looks to lead his team back to the win column in a game at Webster Co and Calloway Co. Both would be considered upsets if they can pull off the win at either. 12. Fort Campbell – Coach Stacey Harrell 2017-18 record: 2-4 Week’s Record: 2-1 Last Weeks Rank: 15 Falcons also got their first win of the season against Trigg County which was the region’s first upset on the season. They then also beat South Haven Christian in TN. Between those wins they were reminded they play in District 8 and were soundly beaten by Hopkinsville. They do not play again until JANUARY 5….Ouch. 13. Trigg County – Coach Payton Croft 2017-18 record: 3-2 Week’s Record: 1-2 Last Weeks Rank: 8 Trigg was expected to be 5-0 at this point in the season, but that didn’t happen. In fact, things went wrong when they took the court against Fort Campbell. They loss that game and then against at Livingston Central. They squeaked out a close win against Lyon County at home. They will play Madisonville and hope to pull an upset and get back on the right track. 14. Lyon County – Coach Jeff Embrey 2017-18 record: 1-5 Week’s Record: 1-3 Last Weeks Rank: 13 Lyon got their first win of the year against Crittenden County, unfortunately that was surrounded by 3 losses to other region 2 schools. Lyon doesn’t seem like it will compete very well in region 2 this year. They continue this week against Union Co and Carlisle Co. 15. Crittenden County – Coach Denis Hodge 2017-18 record: 1-5 Week’s Record: 1-2 Last Weeks Rank: 14 The Rockets got their 1st win of the year against winless Christian Fellowship. They also loss a tough one to Lyon County 69-64. They will continue their journey against Livingston Central this weekend. Player of the Week KyKy Tandy, University Heights, threw down 43 points on 9 of 14 fg and 12-13 from the free throw line against Hopkinsville. It is great to see budding stars being able to hit their free throws.

BluegrassPreps.com 1st Region Boys Basketball Review Week 2 No huge games this past week to decide who sits atop Region 1, however that changes this week with a few big games. Paducah Tilghman vs Graves County, and Mayfield vs McCracken County. The top 4 square off against each other to see who will rise to the top, and who will have to continue looking up. Here are this week's rankings in Region 1. 1. Paducah Tilghman – Coach Roderick Thomas 2017-18 record: 3-2 Weeks record: 1-1 Last Week’s Rank: 1 There are a lot of arguments to be made on whether the Blue Tornado deserve to be in the number one spot right now in region 1. We are going to keep them here for this week. They will get the chance to prove that worthiness this week. They have played very well since the loss to Christian County the first game of the season. They absolutely dominated Murray to the tune of 79-38. Michael Laster came up with a big 20 points and Jerome Reed added 15, with Thomas getting 12. Ten different players scored for Tilghman in this one. In the game against an undefeated Warren Central, it was a series of runs. PT started out 5-0, but were then outscored 18-3 before they closed the half on a 17-0 run of their own to lead 25-18 at halftime. The game went back and forth then till about half way through the 4th when Warren Central pulled away with an 8 point run. Final Score 61-54 in a very good game. Paducah Tilgman only play one game this week, but it will decide who is number 1 in the Region one. The Tornado will host Graves County on Saturday at 7:30 for anyone wanting to come. It should be good. 2. Mayfield – Coach Chris Guhy 2017-18 record: 1-0 Week’s Record: 1-0 Last Week’s Rank: 2 Mayfield finally got their season started in a win over Caldwell County. Carson Guthrie scored 20 points and 10 rebounds while Connor Guthrie added 18 as the Cardinals won 66-50. Play was a little sloppy at times, but that is to be expected for the first game of the year. Especially when so many players were focused on a football state championship game. Mayfield will make up for their lack of games on the year this week. They will play at St. Mary and Christian County, while hosting McCracken County and Carlisle County. They should have no problem with St. Mary and Carlisle. They will be favored in their game against McCracken, but they will play the underdogs against Christian County, but that game is winnable. Especially if they find a way to contain Ware (who has started the year on fire). They will drop a spot to Graves, just because they haven’t played enough games to really project where they should be. They very well could be the best team in the region. 3. Graves County – Coach Joshua Frick 2017-18 record: 5-1 Week’s Record: 3-0 Last Week’s Rank: 3 Vogt who? That is the way Graves County has played this year. It is like they haven’t missed a beat since Region 1 POY Chris Vogt took his talents to college. They have played lights out and are making a real push to be the top team in the region. GC defeated Murray 69-33, Calloway Co. 56-27, and Hopkins County Central 85-64. The Eagles have been led this year by Jacob Savage who is averaging 16 ppg. Jordyn Naranjo is adding 13 ppg, but the leader of this team Ryan Mathis is only pouring in 10ppg. Big man Brenden Young has been surprising down low to the tune of 9ppg and 10.3 rpg. Graves is playing very balanced basketball and will have their strongest in state test of the year on Saturday versus Paducah Tilghman. They should have no problem with Ballard Memorial, but they shouldn’t overlook them because they are 4-1 right now. 4. McCracken County – Coach Burlin Brower 2017-18 record: 5-0 Week’s Record: 2-0 Last Week’s Rank: 5 McCracken is one of only two unbeaten teams in Region 1 (Mayfield). They have two quality wins in that span against Henderson County and Marshall County. This week they beat rival Marshall County and defeated Fulton County 73-59 as well. Cam Cartwright led the Mustangs with 21 points against Marshall County, Jackson Sivills added 18 points. The Mustangs have a busy week, but have a chance to make a huge statement in Region 1 as they will go to Mayfield, who many think is the best team in the region. They will play Muhlenberg County Friday and a team out of Jackson, Tn on Saturday. 5. Marshall County – Terry Birdsong 2017-18 record: 3-2 Week’s Record: 1-1 Last Week’s Rank:4 Marshall County had an up and down week. After playing BGP top 10 Lexington Catholic to a close game, they soundly defeated Carlisle County behind 21 from Bryce Flatt, but fell to rival McCracken 60-54 in a tough loss. The latter game gives a good idea of where the Marshalls stand in the district right now. It was an away game and could have gone either way. Tyler Powell led the Marshalls with 17 points and Aaron Reed scored 15 in the loss. Marshall only has one game this week at Murray before traveling to Orlando for the Amusement Park Classic. 6. Murray – Coach Dior Curtis 2017-18 record: 3-2 Week’s Record: 1-2 Last Week’s Rank: 6 Murray was the first team to realize the vast difference in the top teams in Region 1 and the 2nd tier of teams. Murray was 2-0 going into games against Paducah Tilghman and Graves County. They were trounced in both, 69-33 to PT, and 79-38 to GC. They were able to pull out a win against a decent Union County team. The Tigers will host Marshall County which could be closer then first glance, and a then will play in the Murray Bank Christmas Classic over the weekend. 7. Carlisle County – Coach Brian O’Neil 2017-18 record: 3-2 Week’s Record: 2-1 Last Week’s Rank: 8 The Comets had a up and down week. They took a loss to Marshall County, but then came up with a big win at Hickman County 81-69. Michael Thomason had a career high 39 points in the win, including 6 from downtown. Trey Wilson added in 17. Carlisle also beat up on bottom dweller CCA 74-46. Every single player on the Comets roster scored in the game. Carlisle will play host to Fulton City before having to travel to Mayfield (eek) and then Lyon County on Saturday. 8. Calloway County – Coach Brad Cleaver 2016-17 record: 2-3 Week’s Record: 0-3 Last Week’s Rank: 7 The Lakers were another Region team brought back down to earth after starting 2-0 to the season. McCracken co, Graves Co, and Hickman Co all soundly defeated Calloway. 27 points against Graves County is a tough wake up call on offense. They did a little better against Union, scoring 64. They were led by Jeremy Darnell and Aaron Dawson both with 18 points. The Lakers look to get back in the win column when to face Fulton County and Caldwell County this week. 9. Ballard Memorial – Coach Marla Cooper 2017-18 record: 4-1 Week’s Record: 2-0 Last Week’s Rank: 9 Ballard has started out the year very well in region play. That is the good news, but the bad news is those teams were on the bottom of the region. They should have won those games. This week they will play some tougher competition in Hickman County and then Graves County before travelling to McCracken County after that. Right now Ballard has 4 players averaging 10+ ppg. They are led by Dequin Donlow who is getting almost 18ppg this year. 10. Hickman County – Coach Jimmy Long 2017-18 record: 3-3 Week’s Record: 2-1 Last Week’s Rank: 10 Not sure what to make of Hickman at this point in the year. They opened the season getting blown out by a Murray team, but then cruise to a win against Carlisle County only to get dropped by Calloway County. The Falcons should have an easy game against CCA before hosting Ballard Memorial and then going to Livingston Central. They could be 6-3 by next week’s rankings. 11. Fulton County – Coach Jamie Madding 2017-18 record: 2-2 Week’s Record: 1-1 Last Week’s Rank: 12 The Pilots defeated winless Christian Fellowship 62-40, but then played McCracken County surprisingly close in a 59-73 loss. Caleb Kimble scorched the Mustangs for 29 points (6 three pointers) while Andreous Smith add 16 points. It is not often a loss will move a team up in the rankings, but this one will. Fulton Co will play at Calloway early this week before playing 2 teams in Illinois. 12. Fulton City – Coach Jon Dillard 2017-18 record: 1-4 Week’s Record: 0-2 Last Week’s Rank: 11 The Bulldogs lost 2 games against out of state teams in Illinois and Tennessee. The Bulldogs are really struggling to find offense and anyone who can lead. The team does not have single player who is averaging over 10 ppg on the season. 13. St. Mary – Coach Greg Overstreet 2017-18 record: 1-4 Week’s Record: 1-2 Last Week’s Rank: 13 St. Mary got their first win of the season against CCA before falling to Ballard Memorial and Livingston Central. Things will not get any easier this week as the Vikings go up against Mayfield and Dawson Springs. 14. Community Christian Paducah – Coach Daniel Durrett / Rhet McMullen 2017-18 record: 0-6 Week’s Record: 0-6 Last Week’s Rank: 14 Community Christian is still looking for their first win since springs of 2016. Unfortunately they haven’t been competitive in any game since the first one of the year. They will look for that elusive win this week as they play Hickman Co, Burgin, and Metcalfe Co. Player of the Week Michael Thomason, Carlisle County – 39 points on 14-21 shooting from the field including 6 of 10 from 3 point range.
