Brossart has a shot, but I'd still pick ND this season. Next year or 2 may be a different story.

I was late and was standing in "ring" above STH student section. Only happened once, but it was loud with complete participation. No matter how bad things get tonight at cov cath/highlands, doubt I will hear chants for "Hitler" or "Al Queda" On a lighter note, best cheer sequence of the night was as follows: NDA: we have nuns . . . we have nuns STH: we have boys . . . we have boys NDA: boys have cooties . . . boys have cooties

The St. Henry student section chanting "Jerry Sandusky . . . Jerry Sandusky" to Penn State recruit Heidi Thelen while she was serving during the match told me everything I need to know about St. Henry.

That's not accurate - I think he could/should have been charged with voyeurism, which is a misdemeanor. And when there is photography/videotaping involved, and minors involved, it gets bumped up to a felony. Public place or not, you cannot record/photograph any portion of an individual's body that has a reasonable expectation of privacy, whether it's covered in clothing or not. There was also no consent, he was surreptitiously recording them, and they were minors. The "public place" shield doesn't allow one to break that many codes.

The answer I always here is . . because that's the uniform. Which is really not an answer. If there's a competitive advantage, then why don't boys/mens teams wear short speedo spandex type short shorts? (Google any Men's NCAA Volleyball team picture - they all have long shorts) Don't women's basketball teams cut, move, and dive around the court in long shorts? Soccer shorts aren't that short or tight either . . .

This happened last night. It's not the fault of either team or the school it happened in, so i am going to leave names out of it, but it's something that every volleyball parent needs to be aware of. Please bear with me as I try to explain. Volleyball matches run Freshman, then JV, then Varsity. Freshman and JV players then usually stay and cheer for Varsity match. They typically group together in stands, and due to warm gym or still warm from just finishing playing, are still wearing uniform, including short volleyball shorts. They are grouped in the visitors section. Man enters gym and sits about 4 rows behind grouped Frosh and JV teams. He pulls out video camera. Home team parents see him and assume he is with visiting team, since he's in visiting section. Visiting team parents see him and don't know him, so assume he is there videotaping for home team. What he is actually doing is videotaping the rear-ends of the young players in their short-shorts 4 rows in front of him as they jump around cheering for Varsity team. Visiting team coach catches it first, notices camera is never pointed at play on court, immediately tells frosh and JV teams to sit down and confronts scumbag. Scumbag knows he's busted, throws camera in bag, runs out of gym, jumps in car, and speeds away. Unfortunately, legally there is nothing to be done - public place, no consent needed, yada yada. It's a lot like someone taking a picture of someone else in a bikini at a beach - if it's a public beach, and you wear a bikini, you are fair game for anyone to take your photo. So be on the lookout for cameras that aren't following the action on the court. And have your teams wear sweatpants before and after they are done playing.

Bubble not burst yet. Regionals don't start until October. BBHS took a set and I agree played poorly. The past has taught us that the regular season matchup is often different from the Regional matchup.

You make it sound like ND is sitting on a pile of money. I bet they are struggling like most Catholic schools these days and I'm guessing the parents are the ones who ultimately pay for all of this. It should be noted that there are public schools going to all of these same tourneys ND is going to. The real money comes from tax levys, not tuition.

I gotta tell ya, I'm readin and re-readin this thing and u only describe how bad HHS played, which is not what I would call giving BBHS their due, as you subsequently posted. As I've repeated numerous times in posts, I call it as I see it, and 5-0 in HS soccer is a whupping.

Assumption gets no competition on their side of bracket and cruises to finals to face ??? . . . Good chance region 8 and 10 winners could meet in quarterfinal, with winner facing region 9 team in semi-final. . . Region 9 winner has to get past Mercy or Holy Cross (the Lville one) which is no easy task. All of the volleyball powers in Kentucky and neighboring states are in Louisville this weekend for a tournament - should be some good showdowns.

So according to your eyewitness account, we're to believe that BBHS fell into a 5-0 shutout. Please. Scores like that just don't happen. Does your eyewitness account include any credit for the play of BBHS? Keep posting how great the Birds JV and Frosh teams are - that's what everyone does when the Varsity isn't winning . . .

That's a serious thrashing by BBHS and not a fluke. 2 programs headed in opposite directions.

I don't know about the NCC boatload pipeline of talent. Seems like Brossart has just as much coming in/up. I think the questions about NCC revolve around the coach and the system deployed.

1. NDA 2. NCC 3. Brossart 4. St. Henry 5. Holy Cross 6. Villa Madonna 7. Covington Latin 8. St. Patrick A lot of questions about NCC heading into this season . . . while Brossart is rising fast. St. henry lost a lot to graduation.

The new reality is that due to the economy, the talent gap will only get wider. NCC, BW, HC, BBHS - where will they get their next generation of players from? More and more kids leaving Catholic grade schools, or leaving after 8th grade. They can still win vs 1A, 2A, and that's all that you can ask - but the scale has tipped vs 4A, 5A, 6A and it's likely not coming back.

I didn't say NDA was a small school, but when they play Dixie, Simon Kenton, Campbell County, Ryle, and Boone Co they are the smaller school. In fact, they are the smaller school vs many schools - why does that surprise people? If you really want to be fair to those small school kids that you say get no respect, start campaigning for class levels in all sports. It's the only way, and I think the right way. Just about every other state has it because it's a good thing. But I will say this, it has to be for all sports or none at all.

I didn't. I'm asking how do you define a perennial volleyball power? I think it's been proven that at least in volleyball, size does not matter that much. St. Henry only has 258 female students, yet is ranked in the top 10 in the state, and should win the All-A tournament in blowout fashion. NDA has fewer female students than Boone Co, Simon Kenton, Ryle, Campbell County, and Dixie Heights, so they too are often the "small school" in a match, yet compete rather well.

I saw NDA took down Ursuline 3-1 last night, which is a big win for any KY school - St. Ursuline is an actual "Ohio perennial power". I believe the #3 ranking is the local Enquirer coaches poll. I saw the latest KVCA poll on the NDA volleyball website and it said they moved up but I think St. Henry is still ahead of them.

I have to agree with Clyde - coming from a weak region and having the brackets set up the right way will get you far at state. Greenwood was in the Championship last year, no one would consider them a perennial power. I think to be a perennial power, you have to beat the perennial powers. When was the last time NCC defeated Assumption, Mercy, Sacred Heart, St. Henry, or NDA? I'm thinking maybe 2008? And yes, I know Villa won state. Trust me, I know

That's the shootout score. I assume this was a seeded district game that couldn't end in a tie? Assume it must have been 0-0 at the end of the 2nd 5 minute sudden victory overtime?

I noticed in The KY Enquirer recap of the NCC (4-7) vs Scott (2-8) volleyball match from last night, both teams were referred to as "perennial volleyball powers". It's a nice compliment, but I would not describe either school that way, and I doubt the schools/coaches would either. Would you? Just my opinion . . there's a short list of 5 schools that are "perennial volleyball powers" - Assumption, Sacred Heart, Mercy, NDA, and St. Henry. NCC and Scott have never been to the State Championship match, let alone won it. Brossart has a 20 win season almost every year. Villa makes it to Regionals just about every year. Are they also "perennial volleyball powers"?

Vegas is normal too - The Durango tournament out there is very prestigious, as is the Chicago tourney. Top teams in the country in both. Assumption and Sacred Heart are also going to both tournaments (so yes, you could travel all the way to Vegas to play a Louisville school.) There's just not enough good competition in the Commonwealth for the elite teams, so they have to go out of state. NDA is also playing Ursuline Academy, St. Ursula, and Mother of Mercy from across the Ohio River. You won't get better beating up on the NKY locals, and NDA hasn't been pushed locally by anyone. Same reason Ryle softball plays so many out of state teams and Highlands football plays GCL schools.

In High School volleyball the cards mean this: yellow=warning red=loss of point (no ejection) red and yellow shown together= ejection, but not clear if according to KHSAA rules, if it's for a set (which you could then play in the following set) or the match. Note that the cards mean different things in club volleyball than High School Volleyball. I've seen a few yellows and a red once. It's almost always for jawing across the net at the other team, not the officials. Reds come out if you drop kick the ball into the stands, pull the hair of your opponent at the net, threaten the other team, stuff like that. The officials do have them in their pocket - part of their standard volleyball equipment. To the OP I would say go watch 2 traditional volleyball schools play - like St. Henry v Assumption last night - and you won't see any hint of this.

Just to continue beating this horse - NCC beat Bellevue the other day, but they lost the 2nd set, only won the 3rd by 5, and only won the 4th by 2. I'm sorry, but if you are the 11th ranked team in the state (which NCC currently is) you don't lose sets to Bellevue. You just don't.
