I noticed in The KY Enquirer recap of the NCC (4-7) vs Scott (2-8) volleyball match from last night, both teams were referred to as "perennial volleyball powers". It's a nice compliment, but I would not describe either school that way, and I doubt the schools/coaches would either. Would you?

 

Just my opinion . . there's a short list of 5 schools that are "perennial volleyball powers" - Assumption, Sacred Heart, Mercy, NDA, and St. Henry. NCC and Scott have never been to the State Championship match, let alone won it.

 

Brossart has a 20 win season almost every year. Villa makes it to Regionals just about every year. Are they also "perennial volleyball powers"?

He is writing about Northern Kentucky teams not the whole state. NCC is down this year and nobody will argue that point but, in NKy, yes NewCath is normally top 3 in this area. In the last 4 years NCC has been to 2 state semi-finals and 2 quarter-final. Before Our Lady of Providence merged with Newport Catholic in 1984 the made the state finals 4 straight years. Check NCC's schedule to see who the have played already (Sacred Heart, Louisville Mecry, Henry Clay, St Henry, Cincinnati Mercy) and what's left to play (Louisville Invitational Tournament, Cinti Mercy Fall Classic). NCC has to be a strong program for schools like this to want to put them on their schedules. Not to bad for a school who has about 150 girls enrolled there. If the KHSAA would have divisions in volleyball like they do for football they would be top 3 in the state most years instead of top 10. Don't base a program on a down year. By the way Villa did win a state championship.

Overall I agree however much of their success in the state tourney is due to the weak region they've been in. It's hard to be a good team and not make the state semis as the state is weak outside of two areas.

I have to agree with Clyde - coming from a weak region and having the brackets set up the right way will get you far at state. Greenwood was in the Championship last year, no one would consider them a perennial power.

 

I think to be a perennial power, you have to beat the perennial powers. When was the last time NCC defeated Assumption, Mercy, Sacred Heart, St. Henry, or NDA? I'm thinking maybe 2008?

Don't knock Brossart for having a 20 win season. They do very well for having 180 girls in their school. By the way they just beat Dixie a few night ago which has maybe 500-600 girls in it (guessing). It gets very old reading how people that favor big program knock the little guy when they have any success. You hear it all the time when a small school has a good record or good year that they didn't play anybody. They play who the should play SMALL SCHOOLS like them. I know that in the past few years it has been great seeing NCC, Brossart, SHDH, Beechwood have good years in many sports and beat "big schools". How does a school with 150-200 girls beat Ryle, ND, Dixie, Campbell, Conner, Cooper in anything. I know you were not intentionaly "picking" on them but these are the comments that I see all the time. Give credit were credit is due and just be amazed every time a 1-A school beats a 5 or 6-A school and just say WOW that pretty amazing.

The "small vs big" theory has validity in some sports but IMO not volleyball. Vball is the domain of Catholic schools and kids who play a lot of club volleyball from an early age. You only need a few really good players so small private schools are set up to do well.

I saw NDA took down Ursuline 3-1 last night, which is a big win for any KY school - St. Ursuline is an actual "Ohio perennial power". I believe the #3 ranking is the local Enquirer coaches poll. I saw the latest KVCA poll on the NDA volleyball website and it said they moved up but I think St. Henry is still ahead of them.

I didn't. I'm asking how do you define a perennial volleyball power? I think it's been proven that at least in volleyball, size does not matter that much. St. Henry only has 258 female students, yet is ranked in the top 10 in the state, and should win the All-A tournament in blowout fashion. NDA has fewer female students than Boone Co, Simon Kenton, Ryle, Campbell County, and Dixie Heights, so they too are often the "small school" in a match, yet compete rather well.

Putting NDA in the small school catagory with 700-800 girls in the school is laughable. They are on the same level as all the schools you mentioned being all female. There is a big difference between the number of girls in those schools and the "small schools. Give credit were credit is due to the small schools. By the way in the paper this morning it showed Brossart took Highlands to 5 games last night before losing 16-14 in the 5th game. Pretty amazing for a small school even though Highlands is not a Power House by any definition but way bigger the Brossart.

I know I am beating this up but I have a soft heart for small schools with kids that bust there tails off getting no repect at all. I love when the underdog wins and small school win there fair share and nobody seems to notice. It is not fair to those kids!!!

One example of no respect 2 years ago a parent at Campbell brought a cake to the district finals which read "Campbell County District champs" then Brossart beat them in the finals. I would call that getting no respect and all it did was motivated some hard working player to play even harder and make them eat cake that I bet tasted a lot like CROW. The big powerhouse programs are amazing how good they are and they are fun to watch if you like volleyball but don't forget the little guys in all sports not just volleyball.

I didn't say NDA was a small school, but when they play Dixie, Simon Kenton, Campbell County, Ryle, and Boone Co they are the smaller school. In fact, they are the smaller school vs many schools - why does that surprise people? If you really want to be fair to those small school kids that you say get no respect, start campaigning for class levels in all sports. It's the only way, and I think the right way. Just about every other state has it because it's a good thing. But I will say this, it has to be for all sports or none at all.
