  1. I'm looking forward to seeing Boone play this year.
  2. Abbey Bessler, recent St. Henry grad getting prepared for college volleyball! This young lady WORKS!!
  3. It never ceases to amaze me how everyone talks of restricting contact, better equipment, buy expensive helmets. All the new "safety" precautions are great, but in many cases are killing the game that we love. Address the real problem and train the athletes for the violent game of football. Put the game=boys down, get off the couch and put some work in. Train the neck, upper back and build a solid core strength so the athlete will be able to sustain the violent impact of a collision without his brain bouncing around like a pinball. Most training programs that I have seen do not put enough emphasis on developing a big thick neck to protect the kids. Let's play some Rugby.
  4. It is not possible to pay coaches what they are worth. If you take $10,000.00 that a Head Coach "might" make, divide it over 20 weeks (Preseason and a 15 game season) at 40 hours a week, it would work out to $12.50 an hour. Football is now a year round activity (I would say a minimum of 45 weeks), and coaches put 60 to 70 hours in a week in-season and 15 to 20 in the "off season". Do the math on that & you probably come up with a dollar an hour. Assistant coaches lose money by coaching. The pay they receive does not cover gas money back and forth to practice. It is all done for the love of the game.
  5. The Halftime Pizza Eating was an absolute high-lite for me..... :dancingpa
  6. Press Release: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 29, 2013 CONTACT: Maureen Regan Marketing & Communications Director Phone: (859) 448-2253 E-mail: [email protected] Website: Covington Catholic High School COVINGTON CATHOLIC TO ADD WRESTLING Beginning with the 2013-14 school year, Covington Catholic will add wrestling to its athletic program. Mr. Dave Johnson has been selected as head coach. Coach Johnson has thirteen years of experience and has coached at the varsity high school level for the last eight seasons contributing to programs at Norwood (OH) High School, Cooper (KY) High School, and most recently as a varsity assistant at Ryle (KY) High School. The addition of wrestling will complement basketball, bowling and the swim/dive programs during the winter sports season and provide another activity for student participation. An informational meeting was held at the school on May 14, 2013. To date, sixty-two students have expressed interest. “I am excited about the opportunity to be the Colonels wrestling coach. I will work diligently to make this sport a success at CovCath and to represent the school with class and sportsmanship,” noted Coach Johnson. Dan Osborne will be head assistant/JV head coach. Coach Osborne comes to CCH with nine years of coaching experience in both Kentucky and Ohio. Osborne coached at Glen Este High School last year where he specialized in working with the upper weights. In addition, he was the varsity defensive line coach for the Glen Este Football team. As an athlete, he was a four-year letterman, district placer, conference champion and a two-time captain at Cincinnati Anderson High School. Covington Catholic principal Bob Rowe commented, “Over the last couple of years, several stakeholders have expressed interest in establishing a wrestling program here at Covington Catholic. We are very fortunate to have found such a qualified and capable coach as Dave Johnson. We look forward to his joining the staff and are confident he will develop a quality wrestling program for our young men.” Covington Catholic is a college preparatory high school located in Park Hills, Kentucky. It is an all-male school of 560 whose mission is to embrace the Gospel message of Jesus Christ in order to educate students spiritually, academically, physically, and socially.
  7. Well done, Nothing I didn't expect from her..... Now for a nice win streak the next 2 or 3 weeks would be great!
  8. OK, now we definitely want more details....
  9. Bob Beiger is a tough hard nosed old school coach. There are not many like him around anymore. His knowledge of the game is exceptional, matched by his love for the game. I imagine it could be difficult for the current generation of high schoolers to play for him. He may sit the "better" player due to things like attitude, hustle, team-first mentality (or lack of it). My oldest son played for him years ago & he was better off for it. Best wishes for the continued success at Cooper, and Best wishes for Coach Bob Beiger, whatever he may do next!
  10. Best wishes to a fine young man. Any updates on Jake Elbert? Recovery / plans to play at next level?
  11. Very positive meeting. Coach Johnson is a well organized, very focused man. He has assembled an impressive staff. Good turnout for the meeting, guessing somewhere around 40-50 kids. Realistic expectations for the short term, I'd say the program has a bright future.
  12. Neither school gains anything out of that match-up.
  13. Meet the new coach next Tuesday evening. Dave Johnson coming over from Ryle I believe. Looking forward to it.
  14. I like what I am hearing out of Florence. Wide open offense, something that will be new to the Rebel faithful.
  15. How's this for a short answer: I sure hope so. It's good for the game, for the state, the schools, and for the legacy these coaches will leave behind.
  16. Nice. Wish it would have happened a few years ago, but these things do take time.
  17. wish I could have seen some of this one!
  18. The team as a whole will be solid, including the defense. As has been the norm, there is one hurdle that they must find a way to overcome.....
  19. Not terrible. Nice effort, good hustle. Kid needs to add some bulk if he is going to have an impact. (my opinion).
  20. Looks like offense is ahead of defense at this point. D was short several players in other sports (track / baseball) Stud LB on crutches from medical procedure, how will his recovery affect the process? (My understanding is that he will be healthy & ready to go). Thoughts?
  21. Christian spent some time working with me last summer. Very coachable & great work ethic. He will do well for himself!
  22. Spent some time working with the incoming freddies tonight. This will be a fun group. Best wishes to them all......
  23. A Coach would be the place to start... Any word yet?
  24. looking forward to watching the boys develop.
