Wish it would have happened a few years ago, but these things do take time.

AAATC-You are correct, Dave Johnson was named the new Cov Cath coach last week.

Dave has been an assistant at Ryle,great choice by the CovCath administration.

WRESTLING INFO MEETING

There will be an informational meeting on May 14th at 7:00 P.M. in the cafeteria for students, and their parents, who may be interested in being part of the inaugural wresting team for the upcoming school year. Coach Dave Johnson, who comes to CCH with a total of 13 years coaching experience, will present his vision for the program as well as answer any questions regarding the 2013-14 wrestling season

I thought they was trying to hire David Barnes to be the coach?

Very positive meeting.

Coach Johnson is a well organized, very focused man.

He has assembled an impressive staff.

Good turnout for the meeting, guessing somewhere around 40-50 kids.

Realistic expectations for the short term, I'd say the program has a bright future.

COVINGTON CATHOLIC TO ADD WRESTLING

Beginning with the 2013-14 school year, Covington Catholic will add wrestling to its athletic program. Mr. Dave Johnson has been selected as head coach. Coach Johnson has thirteen years of experience and has coached at the varsity high school level for the last eight seasons contributing to programs at Norwood (OH) High School, Cooper (KY) High School, and most recently as a varsity assistant at Ryle (KY) High School. The addition of wrestling will complement basketball, bowling and the swim/dive programs during the winter sports season and provide another activity for student participation.

 

An informational meeting was held at the school on May 14, 2013. To date, sixty-two students have expressed interest. “I am excited about the opportunity to be the Colonels wrestling coach. I will work diligently to make this sport a success at CovCath and to represent the school with class and sportsmanship,” noted Coach Johnson.

 

Dan Osborne will be head assistant/JV head coach. Coach Osborne comes to CCH with nine years of coaching experience in both Kentucky and Ohio. Osborne coached at Glen Este High School last year where he specialized in working with the upper weights. In addition, he was the varsity defensive line coach for the Glen Este Football team. As an athlete, he was a four-year letterman, district placer, conference champion and a two-time captain at Cincinnati Anderson High School.

Covington Catholic principal Bob Rowe commented, “Over the last couple of years, several stakeholders have expressed interest in establishing a wrestling program here at Covington Catholic. We are very fortunate to have found such a qualified and capable coach as Dave Johnson. We look forward to his joining the staff and are confident he will develop a quality wrestling program for our young men.”

 

Covington Catholic is a college preparatory high school located in Park Hills, Kentucky. It is an all-male school of 560 whose mission is to embrace the Gospel message of Jesus Christ in order to educate students spiritually, academically, physically, and socially.

Wrestling used to be really big in NKY in the 70s and 80s. For some reason(not smart enough to know why) it died off a bit. Heck, Boone was a power when I was in high school and I think they shut down their program for a while. Not sure if it still is or not.

 

CCH will struggle for a few years. You just don't get good at wrestling by showing up and working hard. It takes a while. Ryle/Campbell/SK/Conner are so strong because kids start wrestling when they are in early grade school. It's a tough, tough sport.

Probably doesn't help that UK dropped wrestling around that time and I don't think any of the other Division I schools in the state offer the sport either..

Good point. UK dropped it , I think , after the 81/82 school year. My man Rob Clarkston wrestled there for his frosh year and then switched to SIU.

When is wrestling played? Will it have an impact on any other sports specifically Football?
