I get it that basketball is a contact sport, but it's not wrestling. They have a sport for that kind of contact. But Thank you. You just opened my eyes. Instead of calling the game where, as the rule book states, a person of skill is not to be disadvantaged, we are to trust the judgement of part time, under- trained, under-qualified, non-professionals (inferenced in previous posts) to determine if butchering someone under the basket is safe or not. I think I'll start watching golf, until unskilled people take that sport over and it becomes a contact sport.

lawildcat, just to add gas to the fire, how tall (or short) are you and how tall (or short) is your daughter? I was guard when I played, and never understood why big people couldn't make put backs with 2-3 people hanging on them and beating on them. I agree with you, instead of calling a foul a foul and holding referees accountable, tell everybody to play tennis (tongue in cheek). That should fix bad referees.

I disagree with most of what is being said on here because it's just not reality when it comes to refereeing. Referees are bad, maybe 10-15% are pretty good. Most have never played the game, so they don't know the difference among skill, physical play and fouls. This leads to inconsistency. Hand check (which should be called EVERY TIME) is called out front but EVERY big girl inside gets brutalized with nothing called. Everybody is worried about 50 fouls a game, in most girls games I've seen, that's not near enough. Sometimes 100 need to be called. Most don't know the rules. As of yesterday almost 700 (over half of the licensed referees in the state) have not taken or passed their Part II on-line test. Game management is code word for I don't know how to referee so let try to make both coaches happy. And if having a couple of beers with your assignor while telling him how great a referee you are all the while he's telling you what a great referee he was is an evaluation, then I think you see the problem. And anybody that thinks that female coaches are not the victim of male chauvinism either has not been around very many girls games or is a man!

I've found that I've become a much better referee from row 10 just off center court than I ever was when I ran up and down the court!

You can spot a bad referee a mile away by 3 things: #1 They always come back with the "why don't you grab a whistle" whenever they are questioned or God forbid, be held accountable for their poor performance or lack of performance. #2 They pay attention more to the coaches and fans than they do to the game on the court. Recently saw game (film confirmed my account) where one referee was reporting a foul to the scorers table, one referee was chasing a loose ball and the third referee was staring in the stands pulling his pants up while 2 girls were shoving each other during the dead ball. None of them had a clue. #3 They wear a striped shirt. Yes, I used to referee high school until I got tired of being stuck with clowns who didn't hustle and didn't know the rules. It's a given that we all have poor judgement. So I stuck with a college schedule until my knees gave out and my kids got older. And yes there is a huge disparity between girls referees and boys referees (even though they are the same sometimes). The arrogance and ego of the predominantly male dominated basketball game is that refereeing a girls game is way beneath them when in actuality it is over their head in most cases.

Here's the reality of high schools sports in the Louisville area. If you are one of the chosen schools (aka private catholic/christian schools), then you get a pass on anything that remotely resembles poor sportsmanship or no class. It's always "an isolated incident" or in response to something that the other team did. Conversely, if the shoe is on the public school foot, then it's because they are thugs, don't work hard and have no discipline. I've been on both sides, so don't tell me I don't know. Neither sides behavior surprises me, but if it weren't for all of the immature, chest pounding, ego filled high school coaches out there, what would we have to talk about on here?

Iroquois new head coach was fired from Valley last year and replaced with a middle school coach. My opinion, Iroquois will always be Iroquois. Got some talent and some athletes, but never enough bodies. Coaching at Iroquois won't ever matter until they can find more bodies. Valley should have kept their old coach if their only other option was this middle school coach who is in over his head. Assistants are running the team and it's a bad situation of a bunch of Indians and no Chief.

Arch, while I agree that the rankings don't mean much, I think you are a little off base if you are implying that Bolus doesn't help. He made a few phone calls to some college coaches on behalf of my son (who did not attend any of his camps), and each coach took a look at my son (and eventually offered my son) because they said that Bolus' recommendation has credibility.

Well, he actually did have an out on the force from the runner at 2nd base. Didn't look like he knew that, but he did have an out at 3rd base.

IMO the videos looks like she trapped the ball, but the pictures looked like she caught the ball. Tough call for the umpire, but in his defense right or wrong, he immediately signaled no catch with the safe sign.

I think having the best player in the state (Maci Morris) on the team would have helped more than someone who wasn't good enough to be invited. No offense to Rayven Shead, a good player but not All Star material. With Morris on the team, they probably would only lost by 20 instead of 30!

You nailed it! If you win, it gets rationalized. I know parents at Male who 2 years ago would have run over him in the parking lot given the opportunity because he was coaching at another school. Now, those same parents carry him around in a glass carriage like the pope.

Nobody likes it. The coaches don't like it, the players don't like it, the AD's don't like and the fans don't like it. I know that these are lose and go home games so that might add to it some, but the games are not about good teams playing each other, they've become about how bad the officiating will determine which team will win.

I wasn't there and didn't witness anything, but my point is that it looks like sour grapes on Campbellsville's part. I'm told that the Campbellsville coaches made a scene. Not condoning the mocking (and should be addressed by Taylor County coaches, not Campbellsville), but I would expect an alleged adult coaching staff member to handle themselves better. On another note, shaking hands is the farthest thing from displaying sportsmanship. How you play the game and how you act is better criteria for sportsmanship. I believe that was the point KHSAA was trying to make when they said it was OK not to shake hands.

Where is the leadership of Campbellsville during all of this? Too many coaches are not held accountable for their immature actions. From the outside looking in, they scored a whopping 52 points (a girls game score) against a team that can't play defense, get their butts handed to them by 30, and then want to discipline the winning team by showing no class and saying they were mocked? If attitude reflects leadership, then why doesn't Campellsvill leadership tell their coaches to shake hands, keep their mouths shut and worry about their own team. This isn't the first time in the history of sports that a losing team played the old "they have no class" card. I guess when you get beat by 30 and can't blame it on lack of coaching, you go this route. And by the way, the KHSAA says they don't have to shake hands.

Last night, I did a very unscientific poll of the referee's ability to call a travel (and block/charge) with an official evaluator sitting next to me, and we thought it was 10% at best! And you want to know why coaches, parents and players (who put a lot more time in their effort than an official does to get better) get upset. I'm not condoning it, but I understand it.

I still don't like the way they do the voting. I've always been under the impression that Mr. Basketball (and Miss Basketball) is supposed to go to the best player in the state. I think voting should take place prior to district tournaments. I believe they already have an award for MVP (the best player) of state tournament. It seems to me that in recent years (I know there have been exceptions), Mr. or Miss Basketball goes to someone on a state championship team.

I don't have a rule book handy, but I thought that there is something in the rules that states that if a team does not have the proper uniform style (not talking about a number in a scorebook issue), then they are to play the game and notify the state association. I'm not aware of any penalty though. Can some one with a rule book clarify?

I think what Heartbreaker is insinuating is that while Manual has a great majority of kids scoring very well on the ACT, not a lot of them are athletes. If you have followed several lawsuits against JCPS over the years, you will see that some kids with middle school 4.0's do not get into Manual, but several kids with less than stellar middle school GPA's and can average 20 points per game get in. On the flip side, all you need to get into Mercy is about $10,000 per year. Either way, no matter how you look at it, it's a bogus statement.

Looking at the KHSAA website for scores, I couldn't figure out the bracket. Did they play Daviess for the champioship? because I saw earlier that Daviess lost a game.

Must of heard from a different parent than you Derby, 6 applications, 5 are qualified, 4 are looking for a teaching position in the building. There is a teacher hiring freeze at the school because of low enrollment numbers. Looks like they may be limited in who they go after. Also heard they may wait until IRS smoke clears before making a decision. That's the word at Kroger. I'll go next door to WalMart and see if I can get a different scoop!

Everyone at the school is tight-lipped, for obvious reasons, but rumors are flying all over the place. From what I've heard, apparently, they only got 3 applicants and weren't impressed with any of them. The principal is asking anyone and everyone in the building to take the job and no one will take it. The principal is now backing off his "let-go" statement and has said that Coach Fries can re-apply. I've heard 3 schools regarding her daughter and Fern Creek is not one of them. Retro, I think you are right, this situation will be interesting if nothing else.

Mercy won't be the stumbling block for Manual. They are in different regions next year.
