  1. It was such a great ride, sorry to see this season come to an end. Offense, Defense, Special Teams ... all 3 were at their best this year. Hazard looked a bit like Mayfield last year, enjoying the moment of being in a state championship and then BOOM ... turnover, turnover, turnover and they find themselves trying to dig out of a hole after 1 quarter and by halftime it was a moot point. Enjoy the moment Cardinals, no doubt you are THE best in 1A for 2010.
  2. This has sure been a long off season for the Beechies. Oh wait, it's only been a week. :idunno: Don't you guys have a basketball team that needs a little discussion on this site?
  3. Following Massey through the season, while usually quite accurate has "undervalued" Mayfield's performances several times this year. Cardinals have, a majority of the time, won by more than predicted in the Massey ratings. With that being the case, one might argue that the Birds are good for another touchdown against the Hazmats.
  4. Glad to be in the Championship again, but mixed emotions on the opponent. On one hand, you would like to have another crack at Lexington Christian. Otherwise, the two teams with perfect records also has quite an appeal to it.
  5. Don't forget that Christian Co. is coached by former Mayfield standout Steve Lovelace. 2009 WKY finalist: Mayfield, Tilghman, Lone Oak, Ft. Campbell. Disappointing that there were no video highlights of the game aired in WKY, while 4 Cincinnati stations showed video.
  6. The question posed going into this week was just how much Beechwood had improved from last year, I'd say about 14 points. Otherwise, same score. Vocke, like so many other running backs playing Mayfield this year, was generally neutralized. The Beechies figured this out early and went to the air for much of the game. I would have the Tigers QB ask his wide receivers to carry his books to class for the rest of the semester and see how often they drop them; they catch half the passes that went right through their hands tonight - this game gets tighter. I fully expect Beechwood to be back at the top of the 1A heap next season, but 2010 is looking more and more like the year of the Cardinal.
  7. Hoping the Cardinals have a great pre-game practice at Collins tonight and a safe trip to Louisville thereafter. By the end of Thanksgiving Day, I hope to be kicking up my feet in Florence waiting for the much hyped/much anticipated game tomorrow night. Happy holiday to all and safe travels to the red and black brigade.
  8. Think I might just get dropped off and avoid the parking hassle altogether. Who wants to show up so early just for a good parking spot when the temperature will be below freezing even before the sun goes down? Did Mayfield ever get a fan bus together or are we all getting in the back of our neighbor's pick up truck for the 5 hour ride to NKY?
  9. Just a question, anyone can jump in and answer, but when was the last time Beechwood lost to a Class A team at home?
  10. I agree, and have been saying this all season. I heard this from the "horse's mouth" before the season started and was more than a little skeptical early on, but I don't think there is much argument about this anymore. There is no doubt that Beechwood is much improved too, but even without top receiver Higginson possibly not playing, Mayfield gets the job done by 2 td's. 35-21
  11. The Mayfield - Danville drought reached something like 7 or 8 games, so I've got no problem keeping this one going.
  12. If NewCath played pass defense like they did against Beechwood vs Mayfield, you can make that at least 10-3. Breds' were down right porous when it came to stopping passes down the middle against the Beechies.
  13. For a team like Mayfield that's full of senior leadership, no. They realize that this loss would be the end of their season and won't let travel impact their performance and become the deciding factor. While Beechwood is looking to shake off a little embarrassment from this game last year, Mayfield still has another week before they can do the same.
  14. Ok, as long as you're sure, that's all I needed to know. Sounds like you have us scouted pretty well.:thumb: ... and you'll find that Mayfield travels as well as anyone.
  15. ... and you're sure about this. Everyone in Western KY knows just how good Mayfield is, and now other parts of the state will get a good look too. Cards longest road venture this year has only been a 45 minute ride to Ballard County, so the long bus trip may make them a little sluggish in the 1st quarter or so, but a 14-7 halftime lead turns into a big win going away. Mayfield 38, Holy Cross 14
  16. The "Ride", which airs on MTV2 Saturday night, was taped months ago during the summer. Enough laundry on the field tonight to wash a couple of loads, but the Cardinals were just too good for this game to be competitive... even with several holding calls going against them. 9 of the 12 contest this year have now had a running clock, several in the 1st half. This was, more than likely, the last week that the JV sees extensive action in the 3rd and 4th quarters; although, I'm not expecting a nail biter next week either.
  17. I think the Bomber offense is the best as it's been in a long time with Mallory's strong arm at QB, but the defense still looks like swiss cheese. I don't see Mayfield pitching the shutout this go round, but then again they won't need to. Mayfield 56, Ballard 19
  18. and only 2 teams in the 3 smallest classes are represented in the top 25. (NCC, Mayfield)
  19. Better late than never, who knows, but the new addition just gives this Cardinals team another speed demon that someone else will have to deal with. The return of the "Wildcat" or was the case last night "Wildhog" made its 1st return since Shelton wore red for Mayfield last year. I think the overall team speed on this year's team is simply OUTSTANDING. :dancingpa *** CATCH US IF YOU CAN ***
  20. Likely to be the shortest or one of the shortest trips for a 1st round playoff game... 20 minutes on the Interstate, another 10 to the Post.
  21. 30, 40, 50 points. Who knows? Lexington was superior to Mayfield last year as Mayfield was superior to Beechwood. Frankly, I would have voted Hazard as the 2nd best team last year as they were the only 1A team to give Lex Christian a game. Mayfield finished number 2 simply because of geography, they came from the west bracket and qualified for state. I have no problem when someone says that Mayfield got whacked last year, they did. No one is worried about last year any more though, it's all about the next 5 weeks. Considering the many players from last year on this year's two teams, you can't help but wonder how those points will be made up by Beechwood.
  22. 1st and foremost, it's the senior leadership... much of which is anchoring the offense and defensive line... BIG Bonus. Throw in a 3 year starter at QB, who is making much better decisions this year (top 15 passer according to KHSAA web, 70 percent completion rate and only 1 interception) and you've got the makings of a very good team. Guhy at QB also has just enough speed to take off down the field for 8 or 9 yards when he has to pick up a first down, not his first option, but can do it. Mayfield can go two ways with the run game, some speed and plenty of power with Jackson or more of a elusive runner in Noonan, who is good at reading the defense while making something out of nothing... he is the kind of runner that "squirts" through the line. You might be looking for him in the pile, next thing you know he sneaks out the other side. No super stars like Shelton when it comes to the receivers, which I think makes this team the most dangerous on offense. There are 4 high quality receivers, only 1 of them a senior, who catch EVERYTHING and will run your DB's from one sideline to the other while moving up the field. These guys run 50 yards to gain 30, but it works (always afraid there will be a block in the back call when this happens as it looks more like a punt return than a receiver's route). Guhy throws to all of these guys equally which makes it very tough to key on one receiver. Last year, Shelton was double and triple teamed; no way you can do that to someone on this team without paying for it, they are all above average with speed and ability. Defense: again a strong line with Jackson in on every tackle. Same guys catching the ball are also covering the defense. If there is one shortcoming it's that the DB's are vertically challenged with only one guy standing over 6 feet. Tall receivers will have an advantage, such was the case with Josh Forrest of Paducah Tilghman.
