That's great. Hopefully, there will be enough space on the JV team for some or all of the 8th graders to make the cut. In the future, it would be great if enough kids were playing ball that the JV team could be filled out completely by sophmores & some freshmen, and a freshmen team could be filled with remaining freshmen & 8th graders - heck throw in some 7th graders if they're good enough. Yes we can!

I believe % participation by boys & girls has to be the same +/- some amount. It applies to facilities & equipment as well. I know the state goes as far as to measure locker room sizes. I heard that one local school was fined because the BRAND NEW ,first-class girls locker room was slightly smaller than the grungy, old rat hole of a boys locker room.

IMO, this just needs to happen. While eighth graders can tryout for the high school JV team, last spring there wasn't a single District 22 Knothole A Division team (the division that most 8th graders would play in). This effectively meant that 8th graders who didn't make the JV team had NO baseball team to play on. I'm sure there were instances of kids who found teams from other districts or other youth leagues to play on, but they shouldn't have to do that. As someone mentioned earlier, keeping more Ft. Thomas kids playing baseball will be important to the improvement of the high school program, and having a freshman team available to 8th graders and freshmen would go a long ways towards making that happen. Myself alone, I know of 2 or 3 very athletic 7th graders who are thinking of droping baseball this year. I believe that if they knew it was possible they could be playing for a Highlands team in just another year as 8th graders, they would be more inclined to continue playing.

I probably know even less about it, but don't schools have to have roughly the same number of girls participating in sports as boys? If yes, and a boys team is added, the school must increase overall participation by the equivalent number girls.

Anyone understand why there is no freshman baseball at Highlands? With most other schools having frosh ball, seems like a disadvantage for Highlands not to have one. Maybe title 9 concerns?

100% agreement. I just hope he keeps going long enough for my son to graduate. Didn't Dale also either win a KY state championship or finish runner-up at another school before HHS?

7 state championships & nine overall championship game appearances in 15 years at HHS. I love to talk football as much as the next guy, but why exactly do people still second guess him?

I don't remember all the asst coaches, so I'll let someone else more qualified reply. Seems like all were HHS grads except for one, who graduated from NCC.

One thing I don't think I've even seen mentioned about Austin is the kid's desire to keep the ball moving forward. He never goes down easy - never. A couple times this year I saw defenders slack off because they assumed he was going out of bounds (where his momentum was taking him), but he cut or spun back inward & picked up another 5 or 10. And when tacklers do get a good shot at him, he keeps the wheels spinning and scraps for those few extra yards.

Actually, neither spring football nor spring break were the main topics. The main focus was introduction of the new coaching staff & where they'd like to take the program in the immediate future. I do understand your point though.

I don't want to be melodramatic - so I'll try to keep it short, but my Dad has been around the game for a long, long time, has seen it up close at many levels, and loves nothing more than old-school offensive line play. Last season ('07) I was finally able to get him back here for a Highlands game. I had been talking up Highlands offensive line play to him for a while, but played it cool at the game to get his honest opinion. At about halftime of the playoff game, he said almost word for word what I had been thinking for some time - that it was the best executing high school offensive line he had ever seen, and their play as a unit was as good as you will see at any level of football. In my opinion, you cannot overstate how good HHS offensive lines generally are, and how integral they are to Highland's success.

I had never met the new coach prior to the meeting, and I'm excited about the future of Highlands baseball now that I have. The guy definitely bleed Highlands blue, and there's no doubt about his passion for the game. I also think he's a great age - young enough to have the energy it takes to make the type of improvements he'd like, but old enough to have some perspective on the school & town - and old enough to not take garbage from the kids. I thought the spring break discussion was excellent - about the best compromise I can think of.

Ditto. '07 D-line & linebacker play was awesome. Not that '08 wasn't good in it's own right.

Be careful with this line of thought. Many things have to line up to win state championships - the right players, working hard, in the right system, w/o too many injuries, playing the right in-season schedule to get ready, a little bit of luck along the way, etc, etc, etc. While I agree that accomplishing a three-peat in a 6 division system isn't quite as big of an accomplishment as in a 4 division system, it would still be a major, major accomplishment. If anyone can do it, Highlands can. Look at what they overcame this season to win the championship: returning only 2 starters from the previous season's state championship winning offense, the preseason loss of probably the best RB in NKY (and one of the best football players in general), the loss of their starting TE and OLB in the 2nd or 3rd round of the playoffs, being down to Bryan Station w/ less than 3 minutes to play in the first round of the playoffs, the father of a player being severely maimed right in front of their eyes as they're leaving for the state finals, and then two fumbles deep in their own territory in that state final game. While I don't want to jinx anything, I'd be very surprised if they face that many obstacles in '09.
