"Ryle can still win 6A if they knock off Boone in two weeks." Please explain how this would not be a tie if Boone's only loss comes to Ryle. How many conference games has Ryle lost at this point?

Did you attend any of the Freshmen Tournament games last season? If so, there would be no doubt who the best big man was as a freshman. The upcoming year will depend on how these kids improve to play at the upper level. But, if you're going off of last years performance, it was obvious who the best Big Man was. Thelen is a great player though.

At this point, it doesn't really matter. The summer camp is mid way through and football is about to be in full gear. I am sure whoever the coach is would have liked to see members of his potential team perform in some summer camp games. This process took way too long, and for what reason?

The Lex Ice is a great team, but the overall complete talent belongs to the Shining Star. Shining Star beat the Ice earlier this year in a close match where Fucci fouled out, so on any given day either team can take the victory. If you were at the game you had to agree that the one ref {old guy}, completely changed the way the game was being called. First half, both teams were allowed to play physical, but in the second half he for some reason swallowed his whistle as the Stars were getting hammered while he was the baseline ref. I was so disgusted, I had to walk out. He really diminished the good job the other two refs were doing. I hope to see these two teams play again and hopefully both King boys will be able to play.

It really doesn't matter who the kids are that are coming up to the freshman level. It depends on how much the High School puts into their freshman program. I stood on the Dixie sideline of a Dixie freshman game, and was amazed at the coaching staff these kids had to learn from. Campbell County freshman team had an awesome coaching staff all around and it showed with their performances. Boone rebels had some skilled and talented players and a couple of great coaches in Ben and Mongo, but they where held back tremendously by the head coaches abilities or should I say coaching style and decisions. I think Varsity Coach Thompson does a great job once he gets a hold of the young group though.

Usually underclassmen get better by working WITH the upperclassmen. In this situation who do they have to learn from other than hopefully experienced coaches. In my opinion getting a woodshed beating by some of these established varsity programs won't make the Cooper teams any better as a team. Everyone responds differently, some will get better eventually, and some will see it as a waiste of time.

I agree with you here. I am wondering how much consideration was put into the decision to compete at the Varsity level. Are they expecting to receive some major talent from the schools they are pulling from? Even with a small amount of talented upcoming Juniors and Sophomores, Cooper will have problems competing in their division at a varsity level that is loaded with experienced Junior and Seniors. Most of all, how will the Cooper athletes themselves respond mentally if they see that there is no way they can compete successfully. My wildest guess is that they decided to have varsity sports for financial reasons. Honestly, how much revenue can you generate by running only a JV and freshman program as opposed to a full Varsity program.

Does anyone know what class Cooper will compete in?

Why would Cooper attempt to compete at the Varsity level? From my understanding, they will have maybe 100 seniors, and of that 100, how many are athletes? Kids that are redistricted have no choice in remaining at their current High schools, unless the Parents attempt to sale and repurchase homes in this wonderful housing market. Has there ever been a discussion of open enrollment in Boone county? OH yea! The good news is that Cooper named two golf coaches recently. :dancingpa

Following 9th region basketball, I see Boone with the strongest upcoming kids. The JV and freshman squad combined for maybe less than 5 losses all year. None of the fresman were allowed to move up a level, so their talent wasn't seen as much. They finished the year winning the championship and having only 1 loss. I agree Cov Cath has some upcoming talent, Holmes I'm not sure about. But overall, if the Boone team is put together right and they begin to play aggresive TEAM ball, they will be hard to beat. I don't see anyone beating the JV squad next year while they are with Coach Downs.

I agree with you here. there's absolutely nothing wrong with keeping your kids stats. It shows you have interest in how he/she is doing. People who see no use in it must not have anything to keep. It helps when having a conversation with college recruiters and coaches to be able to present some facts about your kid other than just saying "oh my kid's got a great jump shot". If anyone believes these High Schools go "ALL OUT" to promote the athletes, they are living in wishful thinking. Not to mention the out of state grandma and grandpa that questions you constantly about how their grandbaby is doing. I wish my parents would have kept my stats. It's almost impossible to go back in time and retrieve High School sports statistics after so many years. So be proud of your kid as well as the team they play with and continue keeping your stats. :thumb:

This will be a great team to watch from what I hear also. The Mason and Lexington kids will also be joined with Trevan Brown the power forward from Boone's freshman team, and another big kid from NCC.

You are right about points off sets, but scoring off steals and breaks means you're probably playing good defense, and you established some sort of transition game, and scoring off offensive rebounds means your doing a good job on the boards and getting the second shot. Give the kids a break. Cov Cath is a very tough team inside and out, and they played Boone very well for the second time this year. Even Cov Cath's BIG men made some good outside shots and the guards drove to the basket pretty well. If you have watched Boone at all this year, you would notice that they don't run the sets that they are supposed to run. Crabtree and Brown should be able to force a double team every game, if they would run the called sets. Great job for both teams to make it an exciting double OT game! Maybe it just looked like they didn't play well because of the pace. There's more to playing well than just a great offense.

The rebels battled a tough Cov Cath team and will move on to play Dixie this Saturday. Boone was led by Trevan Brown who set the tempo in OT with good defense and some strong rebounds and finished the game with 14 points and 17 rebounds, followed by Travis Montgomerey and Jordan Opp each with 12 points. Tanner Smith knocked down some key free throws to seal the deal. Curtis Crabtree struggled offensively, but still played an aggressive game. Overall the entire team played well and deserved the win.

No, I am saying this after the entire season. It was even proven when Ryle played Conner. With Bobby, Todd and Billy. Ryle was still beaten on the boards in that game. In the game against Boone, Trevan Brown got numerous second shots off his own misses and put them back in. If you were at the game, I am sure you saw the crucial rebound he got in OT and was fouled on the put back and completed the three point play to help give Boone the spread that Ryle couldn't catch up to. It's fine to support your team, but don't overshadow the facts. Billy is the only kid on Ryle's team that compares to Brown in height and weight, but there is a slight skill difference. Crabtree's height is no comparison and even though he did not have a good offensive night, his presence was enough. Ryle has some great players, but this year they are second best to Boone; proven twice this year.

Boone County proved to have the BIGGEST freshman class in the 9th. With Trevan Brown and Curtis Crabtree on the court at the same time Ryle did not have a chance at second shots and Boone also dominated their own offensive boards. Size alone doesn't make you the best. You gotta have skills!! Ryle's big men are good, but I would take Boone's big men over any in the 9th.

It was a great night for all three Rebel teams. Freshman boys battled a questionable ref crew to hold off in overtime, JV came out in the second half and found the scorers to get ahead and win, and Varsity capped the night off with getting an impressive lead and maintaining composure to hold off a stubborn Ryle team. Over all, it was great to see the 3 game sweep for Rebel basketball.

I'm not bitter and I personally did not say any of Mason's Kids were 16. I think it's wrong to hold a kid back in school for athletic reasons. If they struggle academically it's different. And if they struggle academically, they should spend more time getting knowledge. School sports is a privilege and it should be earned by doing what you're in school for first. If you can't maintain your grade level academically, you should not be able to maintain full athletic eligibility, whether it's the parents choice or not. But not everyone thinks that way. Didn't mean to strike a nerve.

To put an emphasis on education and not athletics. I think kids that are held back during their middle school years, should automatically lose a year of High school eligibility. Maybe their parents would work more with them on the books than on the jump shots. Just an idea!

A normally placed freshman enters the freshman year at 14 years of age or they turn 15 before the end of the calendar year. It is not normal to be a 16 year old freshman even if the birthday is in the fall.
