9th Region: Dixie Heights, Cov. Holy Cross 1-2

Posted by Mike Fields on February 14, 2012

Brandon Hatton leads Dixie Heights as it seeks to repeat as 9th Region champ.

As the regular season winds down, we’re taking a look at the boys’ favorites in each of the 16 regions:

Defending 9th Region champion Dixie Heights is rated No. 1 in the 9th Region by Dave Cantrall, but right on the Colonels’ heels is Covington Holy Cross, which captured the All “A” title a couple weeks ago.

Dixie Heights (17-8) is led by sophomore star Brandon Hatton (19 ppg, 81% free-throw shooting), who’s already closing in on the school’s all-time scoring mark.

Parker Stansberry (13 ppg, 7 rpg) and Jordan Hassel (9 ppg) were also key players last season and bring leadership and experience to Coach Ken Chevalier’s team.

Holy Cross won the All “A” on Jake Burger’s last-second three-pointer against Bardstown, and Coach Erik Goetz’s Indians have maintained their momentum. They’re on a 13-game winning streak.

Burger, a senior guard, averages 23 points. He’s complemented on the inside by 6-8 junior Antonio Campbell, who averages 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Covington Catholic, rated third in the region, is led by sophomore guard Nick Ruthsatz, who averages 18 points and is shooting 80 from the foul line.

Dave Cantrall’s 9th Region top 5

1.Dixie Heights (17-8)

2.Covington Holy Cross (27-2)

3.Covington Catholic (16-10)

4.Holmes (19-6)

5.Newport Central Catholic (17-7)

CCH ahead of Holmes and no mention of Rice ?

Didn't really notice that. Maybe Fields thinks Holmes isn't a real threat to win the Region. Again, the Bulldogs should welcome the role of underdog and I'm sure it's a little bulletin board material. Hey, it's all conjecture now. Doesn't matter who beat who during the regular season. You have to win when it counts.

All the pressure is obviously on Dixie the next 2 weeks IMO. They are defending champs and up until now, haven't lost a game to a 9th region team...They will get everyone's best shot the rest of the way, including tomorrow night's game at Boone Co.

IF the Red Colonels are able to defend their 9th region title and repeat they will have earned it IMO.

The Boys' 35th District Tournament Bracket should be available on KHSAA's website fairly soon, but until then:

Game 4 Friday, February 24th - Winner of Game 2 vs Winner of Game 3 @NKU Regents Hall 8pm

Aw, geez. Walter is not going to be happy.

Holy Cross is a solid pick for #2 considering how well they're playing but I wouldn't have CCH ahead of Holmes.

Again, It's all about matchups.

Should be an exciting postseason.

Agreed. Just messing with you. I'd have Holmes in front of CCH slightly.

Dixie is the solid #1 in the 9th. Holmes beat Cov. Cath. (on the Bulldogs' home court) and Holy Cross (@ the Finn) to earn the #1 seed in the 35th. I would list the Bulldogs' power ranking for sure ahead of Cov. Cath. and probably ahead of Holy Cross. The 35th District and 9th Region tournaments should be fun to watch.

No doubt Dixie is #1. The team that is getting left out of the discussion is Boone County. Second best record in the region at 22-6. Wins over Holmes and Holy Cross.

As to the 35th district teams, you have to go with the district seeding and put Holmes 1, Holy Cross 2 and CCH 3. I see Holmes and Holy Cross very even with CCH clearly behind those two. In ten game matchups, IMO Holmes and Holy Cross go 5-5 and either of those two win 7 of 10, perhaps 8 of 10, versus CCH. They would all be close games but CCH would have a tough time getting the W.

For the record, Boone County is not left out of my discussion.
